Colorado USAFA Deer

LAST EDITED ON Feb-19-11 AT 06:40PM (MST)[p]I used to live on the academy for a couple of years and spent a lot of time watching bucks up there. Lots of bucks in that 150-175ish type area but as always there are some monsters. That was back before I really got into judging them on the hoof so I can't even give a good educated guess but pretty sure I never seen anything over 190". Not saying they are not there it is possible.
Another bad thing is that they send a base represenative with you to hunt so it isn't like you get to wander around by yourself hunting.
I am sure it depends on what person you get teamed up with but I have heard that they will try and push you to shoot the first buck. Again hear say cause I never actually hunted it.
If you live in the area you can drive down there during the day and take a look.

I did see here on MM somewhere this last week in the photo album where someone submitted a huge buck from the academy...

"Hunting is where you prove yourself"

LAST EDITED ON Feb-28-11 AT 06:54AM (MST)[p]You only get three days to hunt, no scouting allowed...you can't drive your vehicle when you're hunting...your guide drives you around (not licensed guides, but base representatives), you're strongly encouraged to shoot the first buck you see. The place is only 18000 acres, but 6000 acres is off limits and larger deer tend to stay on those 6000 acres. The hunt takes place later in season so most of the bucks are broken up and the average deer coming off there goes 130-140 with a 22 inch spread. Lots of better places to hunt in Colorado for the amount of points you're going to burn.
