Shallow question.

Which season? How big of a buck? Public or private? What is your experience level?

I don't care what season public or private the unit in whole. Open question to all and all seasons. Experience level probaly not as high as your whiskeyman. What's yours experience level whiskeyman? How do you rate experience level by luck or alittle knowing and it still come it comes down to luck? 180" buck or bigger is the goal always and I have been lucky or I have a good experience level?

Don't drink and post on the same nite.....okay Sneekee?

I don't associate success with luck cuz I rarely have any. Only application of knowledge and sometimes common sense. This doesn't necessarily mean hard work. But it means using years of experience to accurately predict a mature bucks habits and behaviours in order to intercept him. Knowledge of a mature bucks predictable habits and behaviours will gain you more encounters than luck on any day.

There are bucks 180-250" and maybe even bigger in 40. I've seen havy 37" framed bucks come from Pinion Mesa and the Unaweep Breaks. Mucho private in the unit.....but not all. Some hikable public land area if your willing to climb and have a workout. Monsters come from this unit every year.

A rugged backpack muzzy or archery hunt into public could bring a 180" bucks. An easier late season truck hunt might allow you to catch a biggun migrating thru public. Most of the deer summer on private.

What else can I tell you Sneekee?

Thanks, works for me. I like the late season hunt where I can drink, drive, hunt and eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and shot at 37 inch wide bucks.

LMAO!!! this comin from a dude who's screen name is Whiskeyman......not too mention all of the crap that he has posted in the past.....The dude asked a simple question whiskey save the drunk talk for someone else and if you have something intelligent to say then say it....please.

2sneekee i'd look up the local CO or give a call to colorado DNR. Also, if your within driving range find a couple of towns and go to the small businesses.....outdoor shops etc....the ones with deer hanging and ask them they would probably have the best info for ya.

berryblaster,

Why don't you post your thread-hijacking, discrediting crap on "The Campfire" forum with the other MM meth fiends? That's where it belongs. This forum is for those who have good questions about big bucks and for those who have good advice. You have neither.

YES SIR, WILL DO SIR......obviously i have no idea about anything and will promptly refrain from trying to offer help to people looking......never should anyone ask me for any help because i know nothing ;-)

P.S. 2sneekee, farmers are also a good bet usually a bottle of somethin will have them on your side just from past experience.....

berryboy--

Attacking whiskey makes you look like a fool. He has posted some extremely informative posts and seems willing to help anyone ***when they have done some homework first*** Maybe you should cap the sarcasm and let sneekee speak for himself. Short of that, maybe you could offer something about unit 40 other then to call the CDW.

Sneekee--have you done any research into this area? It's not hard to find.

I have done some just tring from all directions and any help would be good, usally get more BS than anything. Thanks

There was an article in one of the trophy mags just a few years ago. Two buddies both took decent bucks in 40. The largest one was 39" outside on the frame! Seems like I thought from some of the photos that they hunted the Unaweep Canyon Breaks.

Hike up on top of Pinion Mesa from Ryan Park Road. You can stay on BLM and after a BRUTAL 1-hour climb up the steep slope and thru the rimrock you can hunt some good public land up there right next to the private. Could be worth the effort.

I hunted a 30"+ buck in 40 in 1998. The tip came from two reliable sources. Never saw the buck personally and actually dislocated my knee trying to find him. Incredibly......he was seen by these guys several times right in easy country along a main county road on public land. I almost didn't believe this tip, until I realized that everyone was driving right past this small spot. Sometimes......a big buck will realize this too.

I see a unit-wide landowner permit for 40 third season being advertised for $4,000 right now. Given the late seasons, this year, could be worth it if the private was large or blocked access to some good looking BLM that was hard to access otherwise. Hmmmm........

40 is definitely worth considering.

Unit 40 usually produces several good deer every year, but is also getting harder to draw every year. There is tons of private as was said, but as was said before if you put in the work it can be done. Muley numbers have gone way down since the early eighties and have never really recovered. The Black Ridge wilderness area use to be one of the best muley areas in the country for huge bucks, but due to closures and lack of predator control it will never be the same.

Here is the potential for unit 40. Both of these bucks were taken in unit 40 in 1951 by two completely seperate people on different sides of The Park.

This buck grosses 255 and change.

023.jpg

And this buck grosses 219 and change. He is 38 1/2" wide outside and 27 1/2" wide inside.

Great post, elkkill. Good stuff.

Speaking of Black Ridge WSA, I heard several stories a decade ago about big bucks living "on a sandbar" along the river adjacent to the WSA. This area was at the NW boundary of the WSA at the bend in the Colo River. All BLM, you can hunt south into the WSA from the river. Prolly wouldn't take long to find untouched bucks. The difficulty was getting to this spot. Either hike/backpack 5-6 miles one way from the trailhead above on Black Ridge.......or float the river and camp at this spot and hunt inland from there.

But.......to actually float for a big buck?? Are you kidding me? Why in the world would anyone want to put such effort into killing a lowly deer??

REDDOG,

Get the F off my case, okay? Keep your discrediting me to your meth fueled posts on the "The Campfire", okay? Slam me there when you are threatened by my knowledge and experience (which you are). These other forums are for getting after it with good, deep, honest questions and the same with answers provided by those who are qualified to give 'em and who have been there.......with pics. The only place you've been to is crybabyville. GTFU....and get back on 'The Campfire". That's where you belong.

I provide detailed info requested by sincere hunters based upon my experiences and things I've heard on these units. Many of 'em I can provide photos of cuz I have hunted or scouted there during my 35 years of hunting the western states.

I ain't associated with Garth.........cuz I'm actually human and don't breathe and live money. I don't provide false info for a profit.

MMer's like you REDDOG have destroyed this forum into a losers forum. You plicks don't offer anything except put downs and ganging up on those who fight back. Not one of you has the sack to stand alone in debate. Not one. Ya always have to gang up and use the term "we" when challenging a sane challenger. Why don't you petition Founder to give you cranksters your own forum entitled "Lunatics and Their Thoughts"? Then we can each stick to our own unique flavors.

Most guys on this forum have great info...Ever hear of a PM?
You like to post info in public so you can look important..

You dont read sign well, do you? But do continue to stomp your feet and hold your breath, it humors me greatly.

I ask this in all sincerity with no sarcasm in my post....What does debate have to do with a hunting website? I apologize for asking this on your thread sneekee,

In response to velvets thread asking for valid info about 40, I can't offer you any. Neither in my opinion can whiskeyman or anyone else for that matter, unless they live there. i think the best way to find out about the area is to ask the people who are actually reside there aka NDOW, the CO, local shops and my personal fav, farmers.

They will actually be able to give you current and valid updates about important details like, but not all inclusive,

HABITAT
WINTER CONDITIONS
DEER POP
GENETICS
PRESSURE
ACCESS

It pays to go the extra mile and make some blind phone calls IMHO.

So out of respect to you sneekee i'll refrain from tossing out worthless but intelligent sounding info. I'll just give you a few idea's about what i'd do if I were you. Like you said above Most of the stuff you hear is BS.....not excluding mine ;-)

Well, another hard-core, unit specific, informative huntin' thread ruined by the MM long timers. Nothing new here.

For those who sent me PM's.......sorry.....I won't be able to reply. Good luck with your hunts.

I recently saw a couple of pictures a railroader friend of mine took from a train in 40, near the UT border. BIG bucks.

Rack- You must be one of those "Campfire" plicks!! LOL.

Everywhere I go, WhiskeyMan's getting into it with someone. Gotta give you credit on this one though, WM. You actually gave some solid info. At least it seems like you know what you speak of. I don't know the area so I couldn't verify your info. All sneekee asked was a simple question...vague at that, yes, but give the guy a break.

I have jet boated down from loma to the Utah border. While duck or lion hunting along the river have seen a few great bucks! Their is a outfitter who hunts this way and is one mean old man!!!!! But if you go this route you could kill a good buck.
Bean man we just about hit a bull just inside the border crossing the river and then two days later the train hit him ( 370 bull)

Well Wizzy,

You pretty much nailed me. This post should be under The Campfire, too. We had a wild one going there a while ago but it got nuked solely cuz you guys were wrong and I was THE LEGEND......remember it?

I offer three things on this forum:

1) Severe antagonism to all MM long-timers with more than 500 posts where I offer full insults, name calling, suggestions on where to go, correct guesses on your illegal vices, some racism, true identification of your un-American hobbys, loooooong drawn out debates where I rarely give up, skank identification, and a few other rare but valuable services......all for no charge. Can't beat this, can ya?

2) Great, detailed, honest, accurate info on hunting units and hunting techniques in the west for muleys, elk, antelope with pics (lots of 'em) for units I have hunted or have extensive knowledge in or have close network buddies that do. No kidding. The real stuff rarely discussed on this forum.

3) Plenty of sarcasm and humor for those that also do.

It's true.......the proof is in the pudding.......mean, hateful people can also be experienced, successful, info sharing trophy hunters who also like to be a smart a$$ and have some fun.

I don't have any more to add on unit 40.....but I have about 15 PM's that I may go thru if I find time and may post under this unit 40 thread again to answer some of those. Give me some time.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-24-11 AT 07:46AM (MST)[p]Co Cat,

My railroader friend told me about them hitting a huge bull. They hit more than just bulls too.

Do you work at the fertilizer plant?

Here that! Treed
No self employed. I have caught several great lions down in ruby canyon over the years. Tough hunting and for sure no place to screw up !!! You might be lost in their for ever
