Hey guys I have a question, how good is a Diamond mountain deer tag? The reason I'm asking is I drew a tag through the dedicated hunter program. I've never been in the unit but I've heard of it and the things I've heard have not been good. So if anybody has hunted it or been there and would be willing to share some information I would appreciate it, thanks.

I hunted muzzleloader in 06. Shot a 170 and saw a couple better scouting. There is a lot of private, but not hard to figure out if you spend a little time. How did you draw a tag through the dedicated program? I have never heard of that.

It's either gonna be awesome or the worst. There is more snow up there than i have ever seen up there. But, like the first post says get a good map, there is a lot of private.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-19-11 AT 09:49AM (MST)[p]When I was scouting/hunting elk there in 2007, I seen a few deer but nearly all were spikes, forks and small 3 points. I did see one decent 4x4, he was tall and narrow (maybe 165-170 gross). He was by far the biggest buck I seen.

I was looking for elk though and these were the deer I just happened to see...

+100000 on getting maps and spending plenty of time up there just learning the private land first before you actually scout for animals.

jwarren, thanks for the reply. I guess with the DHP when you return your unused deer tag by a certain date they automatically put you in for a random draw. So now I have the option for a tag in a unit I've never thought about or appplied for and I have until the end of March to accept the tag or not. Hence the questions about the unit. I can do the scouting and the leg work I just wanted opinions about how good the unit is, trophy potential, type of country, access and such.

there is alot of private property. STAY off of 2 dogs property he is a @$$ if you step one inch on it he will come yelling. but he will try to kick you off property he does not own or lease to. I drew an elk tag there 3 yrs ago. get a map from blm and study it hard.

PSEhunter dude...........are you a little fella?

My dad had the muzzle loader tag last year. We had a great time. Saw lots of deer, lots of smaller end bucks, and a few good bucks and one really good buck. Could not get a shot on that one. Ended up taking a nice 3x4 that was really tall. But we were not in it for a monster or nothing. There is a lot of private property but with a good blm map it was not a problem to work around.

My son had a DM archery tag several years back. We saw lots of deer and we had a few chances at some really nice ones. But through a friend, we also had some access to a little private property, which really helped. It was a fun hunt for us.
The biggest issue was it was a long way out there and we only had weekends to hunt.
Tough call!

Stop by the Unitah County offices and get a map from them. They put out a really good one that shows all the private.

There is no such thing as a sure thing in trophy mule deer hunting.

I've only been there 1 time. Went to a cabin with some family friends... This was over the 4th of July 2 years ago. Took a drive each evening. Saw quite a few deer, bachelor herds of bucks were fun to see. no real 'trophies' in the few days I was there. But if I had a bow, I would have stuck any of the 4 pionts we saw. A couple were 150" deer, in July.

Some posts above state that the deer seem to be taller than wider- I would agree. The 4 points I saw were definitely only about 22" wide, but tall with nice forks- in my book they are the best looking. Anyway, did you get the tag without using Pref Points? If so, I'd take it.

This is a bonus tag right? They shouldn't be taking any points away from you.
If it's a bonus tag, why on earth would you turn it in? Go and have a fun hunt, if you don't see a trophy oh well.

There's a lot of good fishin spots and i'm sure there are good bucks if you get out of you truck and look around.

If I were you, I would already be planning my scouting trips.
It's a bonus tag! It's like saying you are going to turn your "Expo" tag back in.

Great country for deer. I've hunted elk there several times and I've always seen a few 160-170 class bucks. There is some great sage country that is public land. Another idea to get around the private is to buy a GPS with mapping capability and a land ownership overlay map so you can always be sure where you are. The land owners may not be very forgiving if you wander onto their property and much of it isn't 'officially' posted according to UT rules especially if you approach from the tops of the ridges.

Go have a good time. The fishing there is wonderful, several good lakes and access to the Green River across from Little Hole. There are also quite a few grouse and the season should overlap with your deer season.

Contact a lawyer with BLM lease experience first. You will be able to cut some of 2 dogs locks to get on land he has no right to block off.

There are some good deer though.
