colorado winter kill?

Ive heard from some people that this winter has been ruff on the elk and deer population in the gunnison area? Wondering if there is any truth to this, and if I should be worried about hunting there this year?

RE: colorado winter kill?

Lots of snow up high, way above average. Not so much snow down low in the wintering grounds. I think the elk/deer will come through OK.

RE: colorado winter kill?

Just replied to this post in the colorado section as well but overall some places have seen a ton of snow this winter and others are doing well..

Huge winters in some places west of the divide, around the flat tops, Sunmmit county, and in the NW part of the state - but not so much snow east of the divide or down by durango in the sw part of the state.. The witner this year did not do the gunnison basin units any favors IMO. I have seen some dead deer but not as many as the 07-08 winter so IMO it will range from somewhat above average to below average winterkill depending on where you are at in colorado...
