Want to hunt 2011 in Idaho can get an outfitter tag and hunt the last week Oct 24 -31. Any advice? have heard 78 has good non-typical genetics? Thank you.

What outfitter are you considering??????
Unit 78 has good genetics, but the big bucks are not around like they were......this winter is going to wipe out the deer herd IMO. I was just talking to the game warden and he is thinking fawn mortality is going to be 75% or more and there has already been a bunch of mature bucks found dead according to him......
If its the outfitter I am thinking of, good luck.............

In 78 there are only 2 outfitters you can have....one hunts the st. charles creek area south to the Utah border and the other to the North to emmigration road I believe. These are spendy hunts too.....$4500 If i remember right. I think one outfitter is out of star valley and the other out of Oregon...go figure! I have also heard the snow is really nasty this year. I know of some good bucks being taken out of there last year but who know what kind of mortality we end up with.

IDFG has a statement on their website about the hard winter and feeding deer and elk since first snowfall. I don't know that I would pay to hunt 78 for a while, there are better areas in Idaho to hunt if you are going to buy a tag.
Also, I had an IDFG fish cop tell me that in Unit 78..."for every trophy buck taken legally, seven are poached". That worries me about that unit, especially when the bucks were forced so low for the whole winter.

S.E. Idaho..BAD WINTER wait for stats and mortality of deer and elk...worst in over 30 years. Survivors will be weaker than normal and have much less fat. Deer and Elk herds are already being devastated and it will only get worse.
Here we go again....
Save your money and find another spot. General tags are over the counter.. If your going to put in for a draw. Sounds like Central and Northern Idaho are have a milder winter.

Thanks to everyone who responed. Think I'll fish the columbia for salmon this fall instead. Maybe try to draw unit 45? jimmy

Had the tag last year and was very disappointed. Save your money or try another unit.
