how many on this forum think you need a premium deer tag in utah to kill a big muley buck? i would say no cuz every year i see big bucks on general units i dont always close the deal but i see at least one B&C buck every year but i also get back in the sticks away from crowds and hunt hard from dark to dark. is it worth the long wait or spending your life savings i dont think so but then again im just the average joe who doesnt have time or money but put everything into hunting when i can. so lets hear the debate yes or no?

LAST EDITED ON May-15-11 AT 12:01PM (MST)[p]You see at least 1 B&C buck every year??? During the hunt??? What is your definition of b&c? if you think about it, every buck is a b&c buck. Some are just a lot lower scoring then others. :)

Needed? No. But Hunting a premium tag lets you be a heck of a lot more picky though and seeing multiple big bucks in a day sure adds to the excitement. Before the Henry's tag I had never seen a true 200+ buck in my lifetime and in a half day of scouting and a half day of hunting I passed on 3 200+ bucks before taking mine.

hey marley your buck was oustanding and i see your point but i also remember a few years back when a guy from utah had a henrys tag and shot a basket racked 4pt sub 160 buck and he waited 12-14 years what a waste im just talking in general and like i said i havent closed the deal yet but hopefully one day. ive killed good bucks but not that true monster i will keep searching he is out there somewhere and if i dont i got a lot of great memories and tales about the ones that got away

LAST EDITED ON May-15-11 AT 02:36PM (MST)[p]I would say no. Last year I saw 4 bucks that broke 200 in on public land and at least 8 bucks that were 180-200 in. Ive found if you put in the time scouting it pays.

Holy crap.. I'm interested in the rubber ruler y'all are using to measure bucks...

I would say no. I pretty much see desirable 190+ bucks on any solid general unit I hunt on. I find that when I see most of them I'm usually more interested in hunting wolverines with a friggin' 12 gauge shot gun so it is difficult to seal the deal.

Them Big Bastards that are high in the B&C Book are Plentiful in General Units,Especially the ones that always get away!

For GAWDS Sakes Guys,We Got Kids on this Site,Some of them are 65 years Old!:D

I don't care if they're big or small!
If they throw lead I like em all!

No way you need a premium tag to get a record book buck. But it sure helps your odds. I've hunted Utah for 6 years now. I can say that I have seen one buck that I know would go 190+, (with a rifle and tag in hand) and a handful of others that are 170+. They are out there for sure. My hat is off to those few that kill bucks that big every year on the general hunts in Utah--well anywhere for that matter.

There are plenty who complain about the quality of deer in Tardville, but I have seen many quality bucks in the last ten years while hunting general units. I certainly see more on the Archery hunt, but that is because they are more visible that time if year. And while it is true you find more on a LE unit, I think they are available in all units...it is just that their brains seem to grow at an even faster rate than their antler size!
My son and I chased one old 30+ incher for 4 years, always getting close but never able to seal the deal. I think he died of old age.

LAST EDITED ON May-16-11 AT 09:25AM (MST)[p]With all these B+C quality deer running around on general units, it is a real shame that almost none of them get entered in the record book each year. I guess the hunters really just don't want to brag! :)
I am an official measurer for B+C and P+Y. I score very, very few deer from Utah that make the all time book and were taken in general units. I do, however, score lots of deer that people bring to me thinking they will make B+C, but generally the official score is well below the entry minimums. These are still quality, mature bucks, but not above book minimums.

You may score on a B+C buck in a general unit if you work hard, and have a surplus of good luck. You may also win the lottery tomorrow. Anything is possible.

1- I want to hunt with hntnfsh! He's got the spot!
2- No way are you seeing that many B&C bucks. Really, no way! God just doesn't make that many! Good bucks, maybe. B&C bucks, no! Have you taped a B&C buck lately? They're huge!
3- LBH, did you just say "tardville"? LOL
4- I'll take a LE tag over a general tag ANY DAY! I don't NEED one but I sure want one. Maybe this year or next!

Have a nice day, (smiley face)

I think the word "NEED" is strong here... I don't think you need one to get a trophy, but it definitely helps. I have seen only 1 legitimate B&C buck on a general unit, the week of the archery opener- couldn't find him in the hunt. I have seen a few in the 160-175" class range on general, public land units over the past 6 years. All were archery hunts.

I have to agree with Bill about the B&C part, at least those that make the all time book. They are rare, indeed even in LE units. And I don't know what came over me Zeke to use the "T" term.....obviously I have spent way too much time in this site!

You can shoot a nice buck on the general season public land if you put the time in. Will it make B&C, probably not. But, it will be a great trophy. If you are really lucky,

However, if you are looking for a buck of a lifetime, the LE units win hands down. When you can go out and pass 200+ inch bucks on a hunt like can happen some years on the Henry's, that wins hands down.

All of these bucks were harvested on general units the one buck net scores 189 but still i would like to have a premium tag to have the chance to kill a buck that nets over 200 inches also these bucks were harvested 3 years apart so we do have good general units but it just take time to get them
buck on left large 3 point 2004 buck on the right is a 7x9 2007 muzzleloader buck was 2010

That ML buck is a stud! Is your real name Brian Wilson? Maybe it's just the beard...
