So my dad just drew a Fillmore Oak Creek rifle deer tag. I think i'm more excited then he is. He is still recovering from prostate cancer so we will be hunting off horses and mules. Just wondering if I could get some tips on the unit or any trails or backcountry areas.
Any info would help I have yet to step foot on the range....

Thanks

I hunted it for elk a few years back. all I can really say is Every nice deer I saw was up on top. saw deer low, but all the good ones where high. there are some toads on that unit.

Good luck!

I've seen some monsters in the low country on that unit, but you have to be careful, lots of the low country is not part of the deer unit since you have to be on forest land. I'd stick up high, the majority of the deer are there anyway.

Sweet guys Thanks for all the good tips.. i will let you all know about the hunt... He had 11 points and his health isn't the greatest so we decided to get him a tag now rather then wait...

Congrats to your father. Mules and horses are a good idea for this unit.Infact, I'd rate this the worst road hunting unit in the state. As stated earlier, the biggest bucks live on top in the ledgy country. This unit doesn't have the best genetics in the state, but always seems to produce a couple BIG ones. You will see deer and you will see bucks but it is nothing like the book cliffs in terms of deer numbers. Horn growth should be good this year, but I wouldn't pass up a solid 170 buck early on in the hunt if he has health problems. This unit will wear a guy down quick.

Steep Country and not alot of deer. Infact you might see more bucks on the unit then does when out and about hunting. I have also seen some good bucks down in the low country during the hunt so don't forget about it. Steep and rocky and not much road hunting at all.

Hey thanks for all the good tips I have heard that the deer numbers are down compared to the book cliffs or Vernon. I had a Vernon tag year before last and saw 100 deer a day scouted my butt off and ended up killing a 4x5 26" scored 156 was really depressed with the unit so we decided to try this unit. I know he is really excited and should have a good hunt we have really good horses and mules and have been in some really crappy places with them. Thanks once again and I will keep you all posted.
