Boy, that's a tough unit! My son drew that unit for pronghorns in 2009, and we had a very tough hunt. He killed an average buck on the 4th day, but we were lucky to get that. We saw very, very few deer. My expectation is that he'll find most of the deer around alfalfa fields. Most of the units have NO water in it at all, so most of the unit has no wildlife at all. There are some springs and tanks south of the railroad tracks on the northern end of the untis, but not a lot of water even there. You might try Porter Springs, as there is pretty good water and shade there, when we were there we saw some pronghorns and a few horses, but no deer. Oh yeah, and one heck of a big rattler so watch your step around those old abandoned shacks at th springs.
There are some springs in the hills to the north of Rye Patch Reservoir, so you might check there as well. There is also some alfalfa along the western and southern edges of 041, so he might want to check there when scouting. BUT, if it were me, I'd probably turn the tag back in. He has time to scout, so he can get out there and take a look around before making a decision.
