This link gives a facinating peak inside the world of competitive shed hunting.

http://www.fieldandstream.com/photo.../04/huge-mule-deer-record-goliath-sheds-found

It was originally shared on the post entitled "Colorado Non typical" by cowdog. But I thought it warranted it's own link. It's a story on Field and Stream about the guy who found Goliath's sheds.

If you haven't scrolled through the pictures and accompanying story I recommend you do so.

Pretty cool story! Even though shed hunting rubs me the wrong way sometimes, I think this is a good story that truluy shows that most shed hunters are pretty good natured, if not a little bit overzealous. Good for him though - quite a trophy and Goliath lives on!

Those pedicle(sp) on those sheds are huge and long, the one on the right had to leave a huge hole.
What a set of bone.

"I have found if you go the extra mile it's Never crowded".

The guys who were after these sheds were very diligent and seemed to be pretty good natured. That's why I was a little surprised to read that once he had the sheds in hand he didn't tell anyone for a week. This was after he said he had already called the fellow hunters when he couldn't find them in the first 6 hours.

It is a huge set of sheds. I'd love to see them.

Shed hunting is a big industry and very competitive when big sheds like those of Goliath become involved. Congrats to Noah on a find of a lifetime.

guys a deushe bag,and not just because he found sheds Id love to have, the whole way he went about it,internet scouting scumbag.

Unless you know him personally, calling him a name is pretty harsh. From those involved with the situation that didn't know him, thought he was very cool and a standup guy. You must be one of those very few that would never use the internet to gain any knowledge of new areas or deer herds to prepare for hunts. Good for you.

Ok next spring post pics and locations of any absolute monster buck you can find, keep an eye on him and post updates of his location, while Im "out of work" Ill pull my camper down there and camp out until I find his sheds, then Ill let you look for them for a week or so before I let anyone know I have them while I broker a deal with as many outlets as I can find that will pay me for pics and BS stories. Then Ill give a bunch of interviews and make myelf sound like the God of shedhunting. You wont have a problem with this because Im "cool and a standup guy"....I would NEVER travel down to yours or anyone elses area and try to snag the sheds off a buck you have been watching, anyone that would is a freekin looser.I dont cyberscout,I dont know anyone personally that would think this was an OK practice,I find my own, thats half the fun of hunting in any form.Sadly the world is full of lazy SOBs that think its great, and guys who havnt learned this lesson the hard way yet, this is why you will never see a telltale background in any of the pics I post.

So everyone that went shed hunting on Antelope island in Utah is a dueshebag because I started posting pics of the bucks that live there on the internet. They should have left them all for me. Ya, I like that idea. What ever. I'm glad your the guy that would tell everyone that may be looking for a buck in your area that you have found them so they don't waste their time. I got no problem with him keeping quiet about it for a week, while he figures out what his next step is. You don't know that every single person that was looking for those sheds might also have seen it on the internet, but you single him out because he found them. You have that "Its mine" mentality. Whether you learn about it on the net, tv, or cell phone etc, it is the same. Hell, I learned there were big bucks in WY from a video, and now I'm a dueche for camping there and looking for sheds. No wonder the locals hate us.

Another thing I thought was interesting about that article was the reference to use of "antler traps". Has anyone ever heard of that before? That's taking shed hunting to a whole new level.

You put out grain under a railroad tie and when the buck comes to try to get it, the hope is it bumps the antlers off. Does that work?

I bet the 2012 shed hunting season will be a real mad house. Can not wait to see some pictures of him this fall. Just hope he makes it a couple more years...

gznokes!

They've got stuff that'll blow your mind!

I'm right in the middle of getting a PATENT on a new "SHED NET" I've invented!

You Hang the Net!

You set the CHUM out!

The Buck sticks his Antlers through the Net to get the CHUM!

It's a One way ticket!

You get the Sheds!

Or you get your next Dead Head!:D

For GAWDS Sakes Guys,We Got Kids on this Site,Some of them are 65 years Old!:D

I don't care if they're big or small!
If they throw lead I like em all!
:p

Im going to patent a deuchebag net,it keeps online internet scabs from using pics and info idiots post to move in on their spots. If you use someone elses pics and posts to move in on their area then yes you are a friggen looser.

I dont see how that is any different from putting in for a specific unit because you read/saw it on the internet. No difference at all, its obvious he worked harder than the rest cause he got the sheds!

Those bad boys are a FREAKIN SHEDDER'S WET DREAM!!!

As for the comments about someone gleaning info off the net to find them, give me a break. This was a TOWN DEER! Wasn't a secret at all. Heck, when we first saw the velvet pics, even me and my buddies talked about how fun it would be to do a road trip and look for his sheds on peoples lawns. :)

I think the perfect shedtrap for this buck would have been a string of Christmas lights hanging in a cedar hedge or just above your flower beds. ;)

I am in Colorado Springs every now and then, where can I see this deer at? the kids would get a kick out of it... anyone know?

They should pass a special ordinance in that city/county to make that buck off limits. Here in Boise we had a decent but not huge bull make the news because he was commonly seen off a main road just outside of town even in summer. So when the season rolled around some guy caught the bull just over the fence and shot him. It was legal, but frankly gave hunters a bad rap even in a state where hunting is the norm.
