My Probation

I was wondering if any of you (Fine Gentlemen & Ladies) remembered that ONE YEAR ago I joined MM'eys.

My goal was to help rebuild my motivations and/or, build my motivation to return to Hunting in the Fall.

I made Posts and my count is about 527 mostly in Campfire and some in the Political forum.

I brought two new members who joined.

Along the path of time, I made some new personal friends of the highest caliber (and some ignored my offer of friendship via PM and tossed me off a tall cliff).

So, my question, is there a voting sequence denoting that YES or NO to having passed my MM'ey Probation...?

Jagerdad :)

I got correspondence from you Jager. I enjoyed and read it with Mrs DM. I will get back to you this weekend. MM has its ups and downs but it's a great site and there are some real awesome members.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-03-17 AT 05:43PM (MST)[p]Yea, what he said there are some good fellas on this site.

You'll need to fax some cash to me in order to complete the process. Initiation fees.

Yes I remember when you joined up. ? Can't believe it's been a year already. You paid me a nice compliment around that time , thank you. A lot of good people on this forum with the same addiction. I can't imagine ever not hunting . Welcome back !!!!

Probation lasts 18 months. Lol. Contact Overton. He is the mm treasury secretary and will cut you a membership card and cabelas shopping voucher. Always nice to get new faces around here.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-03-17 AT 10:13PM (MST)[p]I always figured if your login name and IP address weren't locked out, you were "confirmed".

A few that never survived probation:
bobcatbess
joeaveragehunter
bebopalula
jackrussell
stinkystopper

Not surviving probation, in this universe, is a highly coveted badge of honor.

So jagerdad, if you can login, you're "bonafied". Congratulation and welcome to the virtual cauldron of misfit alter-egos.

DC

If it's up for a vote I vote yes.

Have you been invited out to the MM Clubhouse yet? :)

Disregard that last comment.

I've been here for ten years. I've made great friends and killed great animals because of this site. We tease, we peck, we piss and moan and are constantly at each others throats. I've passed the I initial "irritation" probation but it's taken all of about my 10 years on here.

So "Elkassassin" or anyone of stature of being a Poster.... I ask, not the question at the base of my OP but rather "WHY" did I make this Post...?

PS: I Thank You Gentlemen whom took Dah tyme to make a Post. Yes, I can mizz-spell and/or be direct, aiming well. Yet I find no need to ever be rude as is often the case in the Political forum but not so in Campfire. Am I rambling or wondering about why Tog is missing or NeMont or, what is my true reason...? Etz, knott about Mezzzz.

PSS: Founder and forthewall + _____ ______ ______ have been a no show :-(

PSSS: Dah more I babble the further reader'z stray from my question.

Another PS: 1911, I am sorry.

BIGJOHNT; I really wanted to write to you directly but, in a Hunting Camp and among new friends, new folks, new open environment's, it is Highly Rude to open one's Mouth. I am a Humble Gregarious guy with endless SKA's and experiences. This must be kept silent or, some men, of some types, take offense, and case such a guy....away.

But Such "Could Never Happen" with those I have met.

Again... Why did I make this Post and use Probation as a title...?

Just FYI or as this poster may say 10-14, he and dryboob may or may not be exploring same alternate lifestyles. And hey I am ok with that.

I probably got a PM from you and didn't reply. Some people are like that, you know.

I'll give you one (1) thumb(s) up and not two (2) only because you quite hunting for a while and I'll never be able to understand that no matter how it's spun.

Welcome back to the fold Jag

Zeke

Thank's Zeke, you've been the closest "Ref the Why".

1911 and such Men/Women may denote a dramatic "Why" insofar as your #2 lack of two thumbs up.

I will be absent for the afternoon, going to Pain Management Dr's.

Perception is not always; Reality.

Jagerdad :)

It's been year already, huh? Man time flies! I've been using the site for more than 17 years. 17 years! Who'd've thunk it?
Met lots and lots of great people over the years.

Not found "IN" above Post's, per words, but in part of Zeke's (baring the rude part for 2 Thumbs up), in Zeke's writing and a few PM's (Including Founder), those whom know and care have unraveled my Fenn's (2lumpy's fenn's) poem which is ALL....ALL... in the second Sentence: "My goal was to help rebuild my motivations and/or, build my motivation to return to Hunting in the Fall".

So the QUESTION truly is...? Did I reach my Goals...?

YES I DID but ONLY due to each of YOU in CAMPFIRE.

EACH of you gave me things not available anywhere except; From True Friends. In our sole rests God and close Friends. Each of YOU are highly special to me....Just a Rookie.

Thank You All.

Jagerdad :)

I always don't get back to some of these post . But it is good to hear you got back in the saddle ! I am guessing from you post. That you are not from my home state of Utah. Like so many here? So what did you hunt this past year ? Lets see some proof ! I assumed that your Probation period was you getting locked off the forum like so many here that get heated . We all take our outdoors seriously but there is no need to fight amongst our self's. We are here to strengthen each other and the forest we all love .

BIGJOHNT was/is the Winner for asking the correct question. I was going to let the matter fade away and never show what ALL OF YOU, helped me accomplish and move my Azz out from in front of the TV.

I went to the Sheriff Dept Qualifications for Off Duty Carry. I use a Doug Koenig S&W 1911 with Dept Issue Ammo.

101820161004165847.jpg

Doing ok with the Handgun at 15, 25, 50 yards (for an old fart) I used the SWAT Sniper Range to sight in the 260 Remington.

I went to New Mexico to try my hand at Antelope. I have NEVER hunted them and this is my very first. It's not big. My fondest memory is after my 1 shot, his massive speed had him grinding into the Desert and skidding like an imagined de-railed Train. His rear end lifted slightly as the skid continued. Funny how something like observing a skid for such a long distance is my strongest memory.

36551antelopewithnotes.jpg

Friends know I have always made Neck shots, no matter the range. One such friend since High School saw this and said; "Even after all these years, John still destroys Neck Roasts".

In the rush of things, I grabbed the last box of ammo I had sighted the Rifle in with. Nosler 260 Remington 120 Grain Ballistic Tip. Bummer...?

2393020161012113242.jpg

The Rifle is a basic Remington 700 but I Glass Bedded it then affixed a 26 inch Hart Stainless Steel Barrel with a Medium Palma Taper and a somewhat, Tight chamber. Factory will fit but it's close. I made the Sling in High School 1874 era :)

449420161012113327.jpg

Of note....The long response to DeerMadness in HIS post of Rifle and Scope is worth reading. I had a piece of crap Banner scope on the 260 and at 526 yards, it did just fine. But, I have dedicated my life to marksmanship and I am still at age 61, a Rookie in "MY BOOK". There is always more to learn and get better at.

Yes, I did some other Hunting. If interested, just say so.

Jagerdad :)

PS: I Thank ALL of you for helping me get motivated.

Jager, you're absolutely off probation with that Pronghorn. And you don't have to wait for an invite to share hunting stories or pictures. :)

How is that GoPro camera working out?

eelgrass....Thank You very much for your post entry.

About the Go Pro. I bought many of then plus accessories. Got great videos of Hunt'ss but they are to large in file size to share. I need someone to take everything and make a you tube video with some background music as so many guys do.

The wide angle lens is good and yet, not good. I think I have one video of the shot on the Antelope but everything I see is in the next Zip Code so, the Go Pro can't see the events.

Some of the video's show how crippled I am when trying to walk. A Pitty-Full sight. But on MM'eys, Founder has limits on things we may attach and Go Pro video's, even short ones are not allowed. I suppose it's a Money and Hosting Cost matter.

Since you asked, I shall try to continue but today I am worn down. A close friend lost his Wife and I called him. We cried together. I didn't mention to him my worries of being flooded out. I have always been better at helping others than helping myself. This is why YOU eel and others, mean so much to me.

I'll read comments on the Antelope and hope to get uplifting spirits to then generate more "Fall Blasting" critters.....after near 10 years of immobility.

Hugs
Jagerdad :)

Jager, yes that's my experience with the GoPro too. I use mine mostly for fishing on the kayak where everything is up close. They work great for that.

Keep your gas tanks full so you don't need to stop if you have to bug out.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-13-17 AT 06:57PM (MST)[p]Shooting running antelope is just about the most fun you can have with your clothes on Jag. Congratulations on getting out the door and down the road. I think you need to post up your bison too.

After the Antelope Season came Bull Elk Black Powder Rifle season.

I do not own a Black Powder Rifle so I borrowed one. I had never shot a 50 Cal BP Rifle until a two days before the Opening Day.

Once I had an idea how its Trajectory behaved, it seemed that a skilled Rifleman could make some use of such devices. I am trying my very best to NOT boast or have a Puffed up chest as I say such things. I just played a joke on myself and mentally geared to shoot a Rifle with the Ballistic Drop of an M1 Carbine. No, I am not saying they are the same but I needed some subconscious Re-Geared thoughts as I departed from True Center Fire Rifles afield.

Again, I found I could walk maybe 20-50 yards then Pain and immobility's struck. It felt as if both hip sockets were broken along with the lower back. But many of you know pain so I mentioned this simply because, as memories build, the efforts to walk and keep going, never giving up, was and is my strongest memory. My family knows how hard it is for me to walk and my efforts and never giving up, made each of them very proud of Dad.

So, after a terrible ordeal on the first day, Oct 15th 2016 in the late afternoon with the sun going down, a large meadow, maybe a mile across appeared. On the far side at a closer distance, two Cow Elk are feeding. Then I see a Bull bedded.

I didn't mention it but I have never hunted Elk. To see such a Bull with Alpenglow (German: Alpengl?hen) glistening back from his Antlers sure is a sight to behold.

I was very lucky to have a bush about 75 yards ahead of me that would hide me from the Cows and Bull. I got to the bush and for no apparent reason, the Bull gets up from his bedded position. He is awesome to my eyes.

I was stuck. I could not move closer in open desert grass. The Bull was standing broadside with his right side towards me. I composed my thoughts back to Internet Pictures depicting where the Heart and Lungs were. I had studied this quite a bit and for the first time, I was not going to aim for the Neck. It was such a sight picture with the Alpenglow and I could focus at precisely where I wanted the Black Powder Bullet to hit.

I was caught doing two things simultaneously. One was cherishing the moment, the beauty and giving Thanks to God for being right there. Secondly was aiming high enough and applying pressure upon the Trigger all in a harmonic motion I had done a million times before.

Boom...!!! and the Bull raises his Head and take a few trots. He was about 280 yards and there were trees behind him. With my handicap, I worried he would trot into the trees and I could never quickly walk to that area fast enough to have a second shot.

I knew I needed to reload but doing so is still all brand new to me. I'm still behind the bush and the Bull appears to be very healthy. Then, he fall over dead. No kicking, just Dead way over there. I now understand what all of you have known and, how it feels. It took me forever to walk the distance. But I would not stop and in the back of my mind, funny as it may sound, I was saying Thank You MM'ey Campfire folks. Had you not given me the motivation, I would have been back Home doing nothing.

He is NOT a large Bull by many folks standards but for me, it is just fine.

I am very glad BIGJOHNT, EEL & 2lumpy egged me on + others in PM's to show what I hinted upon in my Second sentence.

This may be what is termed a pisscutter...? I know it's not a massive Elk. Maybe the best manner I may say this is: It's not the Destination but rather, The Journey.

Jagerdad :)

Killing a 6 point bull with a muzzleloader is a pretty good Destination Jag.

There are thousands of sportsman that would love to hang that bull in their man cave.

Congrats, on a great bull and the Journey.

DC

Yah Know 2lumpy, Guys there were amazed at the 1 shot and distance and the Bull Elk. I kept my mouth quiet because, somewhat sadly, I wanted to pull a Trigger many times but it was once again...one shot and you're out.

I gazed upon the Antlers and they did not look like those giant one's I saw on the Internet. I joked by saying: "This is my first, yes, it's a Minnow".

They asked if I was going to do a Euro mount or wall Mount. Maybe due to my old days of Trapping, I only was going to save the Pelt.

Then tossing the Antlers seemed wrong. It's at a Taxidermist shop but I don't know which one.

Food was my other main concern because I raised all my children on wild Pig, Deer and Ocean Fish. The kids sure love the Antelope, especially my Son. And it's being cooked daily.

I must be a crude guy thinking only of the Pelt and Meat.

Rifle Shotgun & Handgun training my entire life has benefits but gosh I wanted to pull the Trigger more.

The Alpenglow on those Antlers will be in my mind forever.

Jagerdad :)

Jager, well done to say the least. Nobody deserves the credit but you. 50 yards can be as hard as 10 miles, and just as rewarding. It's the effort that counts.

Beautiful bull elk by the way. Congratulations!

Once I got Home from the above two Hunts, I had one more Hunt planned but I was not going to tell anyone in the Family where I was headed. However, I rested from the driving and contemplated how to make the next Hunt be unique.

In unique, at least to myself, I wanted to use either a 577-450 Martini (Seen in British fighting Zooloo'zz ) or a 7.7 Jap from WWII.

The Hunt had all the making of a driving trip far North and never finding the one animal I was after. At the last minute I packed a Ruger #1 375 H&H Mag and a WWII M1 Garand. I think I spent more money on buying new 375 H&H Mag ammo than I spent on Gas in the new Truck for the entire last trip. It's the same one I wrote about last year with the 6 cyl eco boost. Still hardly used and showing only 3700 Miles by Fall 2016.

This particular M1 Grand is bone stock battle rattle and not my Match M1 Garand. However, at 100 yds it keeps shots in 1" and windage adjustment is very precise. I decided to try something known to be bad for M1 Garands and such is, shoot factory ammo. I tried just a few Remington 180 Grain Swift Scirocco's and they printed 2" high at 100 yds and in a 2" group of Five shots. I decided that at my age, it is OK to fire a few "IF" (Big If) I decided to use it instead of a much better Scoped 375 H&H.

So away I drive and the weather is great. I arrive at my destination days later and I just say the heck with it and grab the M1 Garand. I can't say much but the Critter I am seeking has been hiding in Willows and has been both, a solo 12 yr+ old busting down fence lines at night and not seen for quite some time. It does what it wants, when it wants and Horses have been going through open fences. It was once, the head Critter but age had him give way to younger new challengers. So as a cast away, he traveled and remained unseen.

Long story short, I spotted him 200 yds away in the Willows. I had major fears he would smell me and run back into the thick Willows. As I gaze at his massive size, my mind is back on the Scoped 375 H&H but, I am obligated because I'm in the open, never expecting to find him this way or he smells me and may actually see me. OR... I am imaging this is a TV Movie of Two Gun Fighters Facing off...(Humor). I get some luck. He moves out slightly away from the Thick Willows and it's: "Game on".

During the long drive I imagined all types of scenarios. For your entertainment and departing from my lack of graduating from the University of Brevity, I'll say....I imagined him Running. I shot competition Running Deer (Once an Olympic Sport) so I had that covered. If he charged straight at me, he would get hit on the forehead by 1+ 375'zz or 1, 2, 3+ enblock clips from the M1 Garand. I had fun mentally playing games as I drove. Maybe we all do such dreams...? Consequently I had a lifetime of skills and as said; "It's Game On"... No wiggle room now but mental focusing.

I had studied on the Internet where Vital Organs were and I found Skeleton pictures and had memorized both. I knew where I must hit and it's the Heart. I wasn't doing any Neck hits. Luckily his Winter pelt (coat) was clearly visible with the Sun behind me. I had to shoot off hand and I knew his Heart was far larger than an NRA 200 Yd High Power X-Ring. As I apply pressure to the Trigger....Bang. I can see the Impact. It is exactly text book alignment of the Heart. GOT HIM...!!!! :)

No one would ever guess what my most memorable thought is but, I will write it. Please do try to understand, things I have written and what tiny thoughts you the reader might have about my shooting ability and past. Having said that, I'll tell the truth, as I always do. My most memorable thought is a gripe. Everything went better than most any man could expect yet I am grouchy. My negative is against myself. I doubt most will understand this but, here goes. I was mad at myself for never taking the time to affix a narrow match front blade on the M1 Garand. Trying to use my still, 20/10 vision had me looking at a WWII Front Battle Sight Blade. It's as wide as a fat person's butt, like my own big butt. How can I have precision if I never did this modification...? I know it doesn't matter if sights of any size are aligned yet still, I wanted to kick myself. Kinda stupid to try to explain after making such range groups and now, a 200 yd Heart shot....But it's a massive sized Heart. I had never seen such a sized heart or, animal. Luck is still better than skill :)

I owe the past Fall Hunting to all of YOU.

After he was down I needed help. My GoPro has great video's but are to large. Of course, my Cell Phone decides to take crummy pictures. Two real cameras died due to batteries being cold.

I wanted to roll him over, like BIGJOHNT had but there was NO WAY humans were going to move this guy. BIGJOHNT, I am not saying anything bad. Simply I am disabled and even once in kneeling, I needed help to stand back up.

With bad Camera luck came unexpected Good luck. Inline with the Heart in fat against the hide's opposite side this is shining in the sun. Possible lesson might be a Bullet going slower has less SPIN and this = additional Penetration. But as in any Ballistic topic, opinions vari.

If using modern equipment = cheating, ok...I had to. 10 or 20 years ago I would never needed such. But we make due to get things done.

As for my opinion, yes, I would like to see more men using an M1 Garand. The WWII 7.7 Jap is ugly bet the strongest ever made and, some REALLY shoot well.

After-all, General Patton once said, The M1 Garand is the finest Buffalo Fighting instrument ever developed...or something like that... :)

Jager, you set some lofty goals and delivered on all of them. Lots of miles and three great animals. Lots of meat and memories. I think you have proven yourself, to yourself. :) Great job and a great year, on all fronts. Just in time to start planning for 2017!!

What in the hell ?? You were holding out on us ! You know really these should be posted in there proper areas. It was years on this forum before I ever looked in this campfire area!!!! I can't even remember how long I have been on Monster Muley? Is there away to find out how long you have been a member.

After seeing the pics from your hunt,I'd say you passed your, probation, pistol qualification, apprenticeship, and all other requirements with flying colors!

As said before welcome, new blood is always welcome. Now that is a nice Buffalo.

You are definitely a good guy, Jager. Stick around here as long as you'd like. Thanks for your pm ...it will be addressed sometime today. On our way to UCLA this afternoon for Stevies angiogram... :(

Jag, nice write up. Excellent year. especially first year back at it. JD runs in my blood and I have never cared how tough I was if I could get the hydraulics to help I'm all for it.

Well done Jaegerdad!
We talked a bit.
If you get back out to NM get in touch.
There are no dink elk. Or buff.

Just dink assasins.....lol

37, 38, & 39 I THANK YOU VERY MUCH. I really and truly do. The same with all others.

Even as I show my face and Hunts, I understand many of you in Campfire knows my Home address and... Not one of you gives it up. That's an even bigger Thank You...Man to Man.

My story had many Boo-Hoo's about being Disabled. I regret that much Boo-Hoo'ing.

Now I had a bad day, here at Home and if it were not for DAUGHTERS doing the attack's against Flood waters, I would be in deep Pooh-Pooh.

The following is not about Hunting but it is a fight against Politicians (who do zero) and Floods.

Ugly is muddy waters and your yard, once beautiful, looks like crap. We see on TV, all our Lives, Tornado's and War's destroy things but, for the Grace of God, it is somewhere else. Isn't the saying: "I never thought it would happen to ME" again, sound familiar...?

I talked about, in this Post or another, being feet from a very Large California River. We all, face bad things of one kind or another, depending where we call Home. Yes, BIGJOHNT was correct, a Buffalo or such, has it's proper forum subset to enter your Game. I always have a method behind my seemingly Madness.

Campfire and ALL of YOU, = MY HOME. Even YOU elkassassin who never wrote back about me stopping by and you offering me Marijuana which I have never had. Maybe someday but Bess, it seems I even confuse you.....and your short fingers :) (Love Yah Buddy).

The Gold in Campfire is, somehow I know that if I asked for REAL HELP, many of you would be here at my Home. That is true friendship and it is, silly as it sounds, via the Internet and we, as Hunters, do anything to help a Brother/Sister.

My Daughters have been outside shoveling rock/soil and moving standing waters threatening our Home. Females are....the best.

Like picking a Wife. We seek one who will grow old with us and be by our side even if we are in a Wheelchair. My High School Sweetheart has been, exactly that.

Minutes ago the news flashed into regular programming TV announcing evacuation orders due to a Levee Breach. This area is just miles up River from our Home.

Due to things I did years ago, I have a Buffer for my Home. But we sure do have lots of water. My fields of Lawn are saturated.

The same scenario as in 1997 Regional Flooding due to Lake Don Pedro releasing water, right at the times our Rivers are Full = lots of worries, down River.

Yuck... I can't believe this is my Yard right next to our Master Bedroom.

8709620170220154358.jpg

My Daughter took this picture of the River and, the Boat Ramp, The Boat Dock, the Picnic Benches, everything is Under Water. This Levee is feet from our Home and looks dressed up but, that's surface only. It has been used by Beavers and Ground Squirrels for MANY, Decades, going back to 1920's and earlier. Plus cavities from Tree roots, etc.

Who has a Beer for me to chill with :) Geez, I wish sometimes I was in New Mexico. It's good Wiszsard doesn't sell Real Estate in New Mexico :)

Well focused Prayers are always welcomed.

Jagerdad & Girls :)

Jager, I can't imagine the frustration. I surely hope your weather takes a turn for the better, and your flood control systems hold up until things start to dry out again. A big shout out to your daughters hauling the mail at our home.

Hope that rainbow shows up in short order.

DC

A lot of people in California are in the same boat....pun intended. :)

Just trying to lighten the mood Jager. I know it's stressful.

Jageread, I don't think that weapons carrier needs to get any wetter.

You can store it at my place.

Stay dry my friend.

It's not a Dodge Weapons carrier.

It is a rare International M-2-4 made only for the USMC in the WWII Pacific campaigns.

It runs like a Top an won 1st place several times in Parades.

Jagerdad,

Great to read about your hunting success this year. Keep pushing on while you can. You'll never regret accomplishing too much. How's the Ruger No. 1 working out?

Paul
