Book Cliffs Muzzy Tag

Greetings Muley Fanatics!!

I am a long time reader, a first time poster, and have very much enjoyed the reading over the years. I finally drew a Book Cliffs muzzy tag this year and am looking for a bit of guidance on the hunt and exactly where to begin the looking process. I have never been to the BC's and am really looking forward the adventures that await. Half the fun is approaching a new area you have never been to, learning the area and have it turn into a successful hunt full of memories that will last a lifetime.

I have been to the Paun's twice on Archery hunts, and decided to switch over due to it beeing a bit easier to draw the tag. The muzzy tag on the cliff's should be a blast and a good change of pace.

Anyway, I have read through a number of old posts regarding the BC's...and have been impressed to see so many willing to help out fellow hunts in need of a but of guidance. I would really appreciate any specific direction on where and when to begin the scouting process on the cliffs. I plan to make several scouting trips to the area prior to the hunt and plan to post pics of what I see so stayed tuned!

PM's if desired are always welcome....thanks to all!

Scout whenever you can to learn the area. As far as deer go I'd wait until antler growth is sufficient to see the caliber of bucks they are on. During the muzzle hunt most deer are on top and driving the divide road will allow you to get a general idea of the quality there.

Justr posted that the road in from Ouray is currently closed due to flooding..I would check on that before you go if you plan to access the unit from the north anytime soon.

I can get you around the closed road pretty easy. Pm Mr if you want that info as well as hunt info.

Here is a great video from a Book Cliffs archery hunt in 2009 that'll give a good indication of what's out there:

This is a muzzy buck from 2010 a friend took last day he was there... They couldn't close the deal on a couple better bucks, and this guy was too good lookin to pass on...

Just start scouting Seeps Ridge Road and have fun driving around everywhere...

Sweet buck, thanks for sharing! Do you know the vitals on this buck...width, score?? From what I have heard and read about the book's this buck would appear to be a good baseline for the unit.

You're right Pinny- this buck pictured above is 23" wide and scores 146"... My friend has a video (tape, not disc) And they saw bucks like this everyday from sun up to sundown. There were a couple better scoring deer, including a cheater buck they were chasin around on the video. There was also a 32" 3-point they only got to about 200 yards from, otherwise he would have taken him.
His final morning this buck was standin just right so his head was in full silhouette with the sunrise- it was just too good to pass up.
I'll be out there this year with my dad during the rifle hunt. I'll be taking a few days over the 24th to go on a fun scouting trip just to see and film some deer. I'll keep in touch and let ya know what we see... Will you be makin any trips out to scout...??

Planning on at least two seperate scouting trips. Probably early August and then again in early September. There are four hunters in my group so between their scouting trips and mine we can hopefully tie a few good ones up to a tree! I will post pics as they become available.....

Now grow horns...grow!

Thanks BrowningRage for the link to the video, and thanks for the comments too. We'll be hooking those videos up with all sorts of tags tonight. We have lots of videos in our arsenal from over the years we'd love to share them will all our MM friends, so were working on getting them uploaded when time permits. I think there were a few new ones added just this week... ID bear and UT lion.
