I have a friend who has a brain tumor and is not suposed to live 6 more months. He is an avid mule deer hunter and his dream was to get a 30" buck or have a good chance at one. He is wobbly, hands go numb and has to take morphine pills to relieve the pain. He eats, drinks, sleeps hunting. Hunting stories have kept him alive the past few months. Any suggestions on a hunt for him would be appreciated.

I am very sorry to hear that. Have you thought about a New Mexico land owner tag?

I am so sorry to hear of your friend. Life can be so cruel and unfair. I wish I could help somehow, the best of luck to your bud, our prayers are with him.

Several org's out their....his medical office
Should have contacts info...may contact states that
Have mulies.....they may also have programs
For term ill...
God Bless...

If you find him a hunt, you can count vortex in for any optics he might need for his hunt. If he can't turn up a slam dunk Muley hunt I can get him out on a cow elk hunt no problem in northern Utah. Where does he live?
Wish him and his family the best through these hard times.

I think and hope you came to the right place. There are some really really good hearted folks here at MM and I hope one of them can help give your friend his wish. If you can you might think about documenting/video the hunt if he gets one for his friends, family and of coarse yourself. Good luck with your quest for him and God Bless.

I drew a Nevada PIW tag where you can hunt anywhere in the state during any season. If the NDOW would allow me to donate it to him I will. I would hope a guide would donate some time to help him as well. PM me his name and info. I will make phone calls after I get his information.

Longpoke and Vortex way to step up! Spending your last days hunting with family and friends sounds like the way I would want to go out. My thoughts and prayers go out to your friend and his family. I hope he gets the hunt of his lifetime.

Praying that works out and you guys are absolutely fabulous! May God be with this gentleman and all of you that are offering help!!!

Bad deal no doubt. I am sure there is someone- some org- that can help.

Now this is just me, but if I was in that boat, I would liquidate everything and pay for the best hunt I could find!

"whackin' a surly bartender ain't much of a crime"

Really sorry to hear that. Heck of an offer from the gent above. If he gets his hunt and connects, I'd be happy to donate a shoulder mount for the man.

The voices in my head may not be real, but they have
some good ideas!

WOW,I hope the NV F&G is as generous as you are!If hes going to be in N NV i know a guy who would probably help with the guiding.

Longpoke that is an amazing offer and one that I don't know many people would match.

Amazing how good some people are, it seems a lot of bad news and bad people doing bad things in my neck of the woods lately that has given me a pretty negative view of humanity and then Longpoke comes out with this and changes my view if only for a little while.

Look out Forkie, FTW is watching us!

Bigmuleyboy,

Send me a message with your friends information so I can call the NDOW. If you would rather, call me at 775-424-1932.

p.s longpoke that is one he!! of a nice offer you are a real stand up gentleman.

Longpoke,

Don't know you at all but that is quite an offer. I see all kinds of bickering and fighting lately on this site and you make such a selfless and thoughtful gesture, incredible.

Awesome donations by the MM members. Its great that this man may get to follow his dream Thanks to all of you. I'm losing my father to lung cancer that started as a tumor in his leg. If I would have known I would have done everything in my power to get him on a hunt sooner. Good luck, My thoughts and prayers.

longpoke, My hat is off to you, and I wish I could shake your hand, and the hands of all that stepped up. Someone keep us all informed on how this is going. mtmuley

WOW! Thank you all for stepping up to the plate. My generous thanks goes out to all of you. God Bless you all. The MM crowd is top notch for humanity. Update he lives in Lehi, Ut. I have known him my whole life. He is like a brother. He fell the other day and hurt his foot. He is 6'6" 330 lbs. He has about 5 weeks left of chemo. 3 treatments left. Then the doctor will re-evaluate condition. Call hospice then. He is past his limit for his body of radiation treatments. Right now only 6 months to live. He is married and has 4 kids. No life insurance. His boy who is 15 is having a rough time with him dying. He has a good attitude about dying. (You know how hunters are). Just a couple of days ago he told me his theme song was: Tim McGraw (To Live Like You Were Dying). He can't do much. He gets tired quickly. 2-3 hours. His equilibrium is terrible. He is on a cpat machine at night to sleep. He loves trapping animals.

I lost a friend to a brain tumor a few months ago. I hope a hunt works out for your buddy he is in my thoughts and prayers.Longpoke, prism, bmtoth you guys are inspiring.Your offers are beyond awesome.Everyone should watch cell phone use.

Well, here is the reply from the Director of the Nevada Department of Wildlife. Sucks they couldn't make an exception in a case like this.

"Unfortunately, state law does not allow for a transfer of a tag once it is issued. The only thing I can think of is a landowner tag. I will ask Bob Haughian to provide you with a list of landowners that receive compensation tags."

Good Luck!

My dad had lung cancer which after 2 yrs of fighting finally went to his brain. Those damn tumors really did a number to a once proud man. I watched it for 3 months destroy my best friend in the world and my hero and as I type the tears are running for his kids, and I was married and not living at home. I can't help with the hunt, but I hope you will give us all a holler when the day comes and his family needs some help, a lot of people stepped up for my mom, I would like a chance to return the favor!! Help out those kids man, f#$k cancer!!!!

Bigmuleyboy:

So sorry to hear about your friend. I read your post last night and it has been going through my mind a lot today.

I don't have an in on a mule deer hunt for this fall but if you find one put me down for $100 donation towards it. I've noticed quite a few cheaper land-owner tags in CO this year, they may not have great trophy potential but it is a guaranteed hunt.

One post mentioned ongoing help for the family. I just live up the road in Herriman and I'd be happy to include the 15 year old son in some hunts with me and my boys in the years to come (I have sons 10, 14, & 17). He'll probably have other family/friends who will do this as well, but in the case I can help please let me know.

I am in the same boat as DidIDraw as far as connections and I would definitely be in for $100 to help out as well.

I was truly touched by this post and I am proud to be a part of such an amazing community.

There are some great guys on this site!

Your friend is in my prayers and I hope something great works out for him.

Best wishes for your friend. It sounds like he will an awesome opportunity or two....to everyone else that has posted, WOW. I've seen some amazing acts of kindness and generosity in my life, but this single thread is right near the top already. I'm proud to be a part of such an incredible group of people...and I too could offer a $100 to help if need be.

Way to go folks!!

I'm so sorry for your friend. It swelled up my eyes. my uncle died from a brain tumor a couple of years ago. When it was first discovered he was told he had six months. He did all the chemo and even had a piece of his brain removed. After surgery he lost a lot of his memory, but guess what? He started to regain his memory and after a few months of therapy he went home. He lived for almost 3 years after that and got to go hunting one more trip. Keep the faith and keep praying. He may just surprise everyone!

LAST EDITED ON Jun-26-11 AT 08:32AM (MST)[p]With all the bickering in life, including this forum, it is great to be reminded how sacret life is and what is important, and how guys who might fight over lesser things, can come together so quickly in these situations.

I was scouting with a friend this weekend in a LE Unit here in Idaho he grew up scouting/hunting with his dad every year. They were very close. The unit turned to a draw when he was very young and he and his dad only drew it twice each after that. The last time was in 90' when my friend drew the tag, and they managed to get a distant family member who has land in the unit to give his dad a landowner tag so they could hunt it together. They had a tremendous experience hunting together and even killed some nice deer. The next year his dad came down with cancer, at 56 years of age. He passed away in two years. While scouting this weekend we went up near the top of the highest mountain in the unit and there was a headstone that had been cemented into a natural pile of rock overlooking an amazing 360 degree view, with empty cases from his dad's 7mm, sturgeon hooks, spinners, turkey feathers, and a goose call all encased in the cement. It is amazing how this sport becomes part of ones soul and brings people and family together. One of the reasons I have nurtured hunting in my boys is not only to spend time with them as a family now, but for generations. Watching my 43 year old friend at that grave marker talk about his dad was unbelievably representative about what is right and what is important in life. So, while I apologize for the long post, I would absolutely donate for resources to help make this happen, including the inclusion of his family in the experience, especially the son. Please keep us in the loop on how the process goes and count me in for $100 for costs, pm me for details on where to deliver.

Are there organizations, that in particular seek to provide mentors for the children of deceased sportsmen for outdoor activities? If so as MM members I feel this would be an area to focus support. Thank you BigMuleyBoy for being a good friend.

Brian

BigMuley, Have you made a plan yet for your friend or are you still looking at options? Lots of great offers and great people here! Another option is up here in northern wyo. I know there are some leftover tags in region f which have lots of land owners that would be willing to allow hunting on there place. I do know wyoming fish and game has tags for hadicap/ill persons for deer, elk, and lope for different parts of the state. We could for sure look into that. I think that it could be a great exerience for his family to travel a long and enjoy it with him. Keep us updated so we can help anyway possible!

I have been on here reading and enjoying the pictures but have never posted. After reading this thread I finally got a username and password. Thanks to all of you who have made such kind offers to assist a fellow hunter in need. It is an inspiration. Please keep us posted on your friend's progress and I wish him the best of luck on whatever hunts he does this fall. I am certainly wishing him well!

Is your friend a member of this site? I sent you a PM. I may be able to help.

Jeremy

Here is an update. He visited the doctor yesterday 7/7/11. The doctor scheduled another MRI for 7/17/11 for growth of the tumors. He has 2 inoperable tumors now. His hands, arms, feet, legs are numb. Still in pain, difficult breathing. Voice is raspy and lower toned. Said, no more chemotherapy. Throws up the chemo pills and all food. Very miserable for him. He said, he would try venous chemo again, no pills again. I have sent some emails, spoke with some landowners, talked with some people still working on a good commitment from someone. Thanks for all the support and help. He said, the hunting community are the best! Very helpful! Very good hearted! Thanks for the input and help from everyone out there in MM country.

He is now on hospice and we are trying to get him out on an archery hunt early with a crossbow. He is struggling and is home bound. Not eating anys solids. He has rough days and has had a lot of people visit him. He is still quiet anxious for a mule deer hunt! I need an archery tag for utah. Anyone out there who can help me? I have tried MDF, SFW, RMEF, DWR, with no luck. We have some land lined up in southern utah we just need a tag? Any advise or wisdom out there? Thanks for your help.

It's probably already been stated somewhere and I don't have the time to look it up but if the DWR let's people donate tags to someone else I am more than willing to donate my tag to him.

It isn't much but it is a general season archery tag and if you have land lined up then he should be good.

I will do some checking and let me know if this is possible if you already know.

We have got to be able to do something for this guy!

You know what, sometimes you have to just ignore the rules. Get him in an old beater truck with the crossbow and just go if he's still up to it. Go for a drive on elk ridge and enjoy seeing the bucks and looking for the boomer. Let them cite him and set a court date for Dec.

+1 Birdbuster That sure is a thought.

"I have found if you go the extra mile it's Never crowded".

I was going to say something like that, but thought better of it with the LE career I retired from. The problem I see if you do as suggested is will he alone be cited for a game law violation if you get stopped or will everyone with him also get cited. That's not something to take lightly now with the multistate Violator Compact in effect in almost 40 states now.

Take him out for a little ride to AI, and go out in a blaze of glory.

I know, it sounds better than it would probably work in the end.

My heart goes out to your friend!

I HOPE HE GETS THE CHANCE AT A30 INCH BUCK MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS GO OUT TO HIS WIFE AND KIDS

If my buddy was dieing and wanted one last hunt Id make it happen, the worthless UT DWR be damned if they wont issue him a tag.

I have a brother that is disabled. He drew a Utah general archery tag this year. The DWR took away the season extension dates for the disabled on the unit that we like to hunt, so we turned his tag back into the DWR about a week ago. I know they have an extra tag floating around but I don't know if the can reissue it because its not a LE tag. I hope they can work with out for you. God Bless!!!

i know it aint a deer tag but me and my dad are willing to give him a half day phesant hunt on our hunting ranch in southern utah. if its something he is up for send me a pm and we can get it going for sept. we just burried a good friend that died of cancer at age 36 so we know where your coming from and hope we can help.

Bigmuleyboy,

Thanks for the PM notifying that a hunt has been arranged. My check is in the envelope ready to go. Please post up a few details so I can feel comfortable dropping the envelope in the box. Sorry to seem a bit skeptical, noticed your post count is low and just looking for a little assurance.

So sorry to hear about your friend!!! I can't help out with any hunts but i do know a way to help his family. Last year my sister had fallen down the stairs and had to have 3 brain surgeries, and another 3 after that to remove and replace a piece of her skull that was dead and also put a shunt in her skull to drain the spinal fluid to her stomach. She was in the hospital a total of 10 weeks. I can imagine the heart ache and how expensive his hospital bills are going to be. My family put together a yard/bake sale fundraiser for my sister to help pay off medical bills and care for my sister and her son who had just turned a year old a week after her accident. Also my sisters husbands brother put together a Pledgie website where people could donate. So many people came to buy and DONATE items for us to sell! It was incredible how many generous people there were. People would buy something from the yard sale and hand us a $100 and said to keep the change. I live in American Fork... which you probably know is the city right next to Lehi. There are many many good people around here that will be willing to help out with ANYTHING. They had raised almost $3,500 JUST from the pledgie website. As for the yard/bake sale... Just over $10,000. Just wanted to share that with you and maybe they could do the same? Good luck to your friend! I hope he gets to go on a good hunt!!!

Well we did it! We pulled off an early hunt for Chuck Andersen who has the brain tumor. Thank you to all the MM support base. The real hero is the CWMU operator Todd Hinkins who donated his tag so Chuck could hunt. A special thanks to Todd and Jed Hinkins who donated the tag, time, and resources to help with the terminally ill hunt. Also the DWR for allowing Chuck to hunt with a rifle! We were planning on having Chuck hunt with a crossbow and were working on an archery tag with no success. Thanks goes out as well to all the CWMU operators who were willing to help out any way possible but did not have any deer tags left.
It was a last minute hunt with family and friends who made the hunt possible. We could not have pulled it off with out a lot of good people helping out. Chuck was very excited to have an opportunity to even hunt.

We planned on hunting only 2 days on the unit. That is all Chuck could handle. We had a chance at a nice 25-28" 5X6 with a hook cheater on the G3. He jumped up and bounced away only to have us admire his beautiful rack! Wow! I am guessing 165-180 class animal around a 4 yr old buck maybe 5. We did connect on the last minute before we were ready to pack up and come home on a 20" 3X4. What excitement for Chuck and his family! It was an inspiring, awesome moment for all of us! Our heart goes out to other terminally ill victims and family. I won't bore you with the details but, Thanks again for all the support, words of wisdom, generosity, and kindness expressed by all! Thanks to the donators, vortex, and others who assisted. You are the best. May all your hunts be memorable!

Thanks,
Bigmuleyboy

SO glad it worked out for him, every hunter should have the same opportunity when the time comes. My fathers last hunt was just a doe antelope but I will remember it till I go on my last.Thanx to everyone that made this happen.

That is so awesome to hear Chuck had a successful hunt. Pretty awesome as well the help that went out to you guys. Hopefully Chuck and his family will remember those two fun days, and my prayers are with them as well. Congrats!

Kudos to all involved and great to know that things worked out to get him on that hunt. Prayers are still going his way!!!

Awesome!
Way to go Chuck, and the Hinkins, and you for pursuing it so hard!
Just an awesome story, get it written up, the whole story and submit to Trophy Hunter, I bet they would publish it.
YES!!!!

That's a great looking buck Chuck took. I'm very happy for him, his family, and friends. Props to Bigmuleyboy, Todd and Jed Hinkins, and the DWR for making this memorable hunt possible for Chuck. God Bless all of you and my continued prayers for Chuck and his family.

Thanks to you for getting your buddy out on one last hunt!

Hopefully we all have friends like you that would do likewise for each of us.

Really a neat deal how it all came together for you guys.

AWESOME!!!!

Thanks to all who contributed, and congrats to the hunter.

Praying for a Miracle.

This is the one of the reasons I come on these sites. There is good in everybody just have to find it sometimes. Thanks to all of you who helped out with the hunt and my families thoughts and Prayers go out to him and his family.

Congratulations on a fine buck! I'm sure glad you were able to make this hunt happen. I hope if I ever find myself in a similar situation I have friends like you.

God bless.

We would like to thank everyone again for the support and encouragement given here at monstermuleys. Once again thank Todd and Jed Hinkins for their hospitality and good hearts for donating the tag. Todd runs a classy CWMU and an honest outfitter organization. They are as honest as the day comes! I would recommend hunting with them all the time. Give Todd a call and he can tell you about quality and quantity of deer and elk on his hunts. He still has a few elk tags left!

Chuck Andersen passed away Aug 11, 2011. One week from the day he shot his last buck deer. We were fortunate to get out and hunt when we did. Thanks to Todd Hinkins, DWR, and Julie Andersen. They are the real heroes for pulling off the hunt. Julie has a fund set up at Zions Bank. Here is the link to Chuck Andersen's obituary:

Thanks again to all donators and Vortex optics!

Sorry to hear this, I was really pulling for him. Glad they were able to hook something up for him before he left.
