Well I spent last Thursday thru Sunday up in 'G' 145 and 135 units.

Covered just over 5 miles a day bushwacking 'UP' and into the snowline.....

Did not see a single doe with a fawn by her side.....

Saw two velvet bucks......one decent for mid-June the other a young buck........the only two bucks I saw/glassed.

Talked to a couple guys that guide for different Outfitters and they both said the Outfitter was 50/50 on having their 'deposit paid' clients withdrawing from the draw.

Still lots of snow-----

Heads Up---The road to Cottonwood lake is closed for washed out bridge repair into late July------

Grey's River road will get plowed and road repaired starting this week....

Moose looked okay with a few bulls in moose 23/26

Elk seemed down from past years as no 30--50 cow/calves herds...more smaller 10-15 cows/calves herds....very few velvet bulls....

Kind of the same story I have heard from other areas of the state.
My brother is spending some time in Wyoming in region D and B looking for areas to hunt this fall and the last time I talked to him ,things look dismal. Not seeing very many deer for the miles he has covered.Might be a good year to forget deer hunting in Wyoming.

I concur. It will probably take 3-4 years to recover from this winter.Everyone should just stay home til about 2015 or so.

It looks like a good number of bucks made it through the winter from what I saw. Hardly any fawns did. Hunting for mature bucks should be okay this year, next year and possibly one more after that. Because last years fawn crop is mostly dead - I would expect the big buck hunting to decline a lot 3-5 years out. Hopefully we can make up for it in the next couple of years to the impacts are lessened.

I made a run up and around the unit last week and holy crap there's still a lot of snow up there. Places we scouted last year in July will probably be snow bound through august this year. The Hoback, Snake, and Greys are all cranking. If you're into whitewater it's gonna be a great summer!

Didn't see many critters, but I saw a lot more antelope than I expected on the eastern side. Some great bucks too. Looked like itd be a good year to have an antelope tag.

I'm going up to the Hams Fork area this weekend to do a little poking around.Ive got a area 98 Antelope tag and "G" Deer tag this year.Or should have anyways
I'll post back what I see.I hope its better then what I'm expecting

I've got a unit 26 moose tag this year and can't wait to get out there to hunt. If anyone has seen any moose during their deer scouting trips up there a PM or e-mail would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance...

Too bad. This fall may be a hard one. The few trips I have taken seem to be the same. I was hoping for better news from other people.

Just got back from there today. Didn't go hiking as I was busy cooking for a youth outing just south of Smoot. Saw 20-30 deer just from the road driving in at evening time. Most were up on the pass from Border Junction. Two were bucks with one already way past his ears and as thick as your wrist. Was really surprised to see them with all the dismal reports of winter kill. Sat in front of my neighbors cabin cooking dutch oven for the kiddies and would watch 50+ deer on the mountain across the highway going to Smoot, Afton etc. A couple of elk to boot! Although no fawns now that I think of it. Extremely wet, and green, green, green. The Salt Creek is high and actually flooded a bunch of the boys out of the wall tent they were in. I got up at 5:00 in the morning to P and laughed when I saw them floating around in the tent bumping into each other on their airbeds.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-26-11 AT 05:32AM (MST)[p]Steve---Were you guys/boys doing a fencing project right there at the cabin in Forest Dell?

Bunch of fence posts in a silver toyota?

They 'dump' the 1000 head of mountain maggots yet?

South of Evanston saw some does and fawns (good sign). Ran into a bachelor group of 30-35 bucks small to big. I think this is region K though. Very cool to see that many bucks at 60 yards. Some of these bucks will definitely top 170 by the end of summer. I will try to post some pics when I can get to my wife's camera

I'm confused on what everyone means by "fawns" this late in June.
Someone said they didn't see any fawns. Do you mean the fawns born this year (most born around June 10th?),or do you mean last year's fawns (born June 2010?) which technically aren't fawns anymore, but yearlings.

The reason I ask is if you're scouting in early/mid June, you won't see many fawns; they are either not born yet or are hid in the cover by mom.

Now if you mean last year's fawns, who really took a hit this winter, that makes sense but they are yearlings now and won't be along side a doe as they've been booted out on their own or likely died from the winter kill.

Just wondering what you meant.

Here are tho Photos of the 3rd group of bucks. The first two groups were closer to the edge and split before my wife could get the camera going.
Im not sure if you guys can zoom in or not, sure wish i could fix these up a bit before posting.

Sorry Christian I meant to say yearlings. there are a few yearling bucks in these photos (if you look real hard)

Again i think this is region K

No Robb. We were down across from the abandoned youth cabins on the east side of the road before you get to Smoot. My neighbor has a big cabin with a lake there on the west side of Salt Creek.

Not to be nit-picky but, It's actually salt river. Salt Creek runs down from the top of the south end and into the smith's fork. :)

To let people know just how bad the winter was in G. The town I live in is in the lower end of G and every year there is anywwere from 10 to 15 bucks on average sometimes more sometimes less living on the river bottom by my house and about 30 does and fawns, this year I have only seen 1 buck and he isnt even a muley its a whitetail and I have counted a total of 8 does and zero yearlings. In my opinoin if the Fish cops dont do something and start using commen sense with there managment we will lose our deer herds in the lower end of G.

We were up in G a couple weeks ago snowmobling and halfway up to where we set camp up for muleys there is a snotel station that said there was still 76 inches of snow on the measuring stick. Thats just crazy.

Ah your right, Salt River. Especially right now, it is far from being a creek, definitely a river.

It's been a couple weeks since the last report on how the herd is doing since the heavy winter. Anyone been up to look around recently?

yeh it is lush---green and thick!

The high country still has quite a bit of snow!

Saw a dandy bull moose.

Roads are either washed out or still drifted in. Call the forest service before you go up there to get a report to see if you can even make to your desired location. Still quite a bit of snow up high. Found some bucks but nothing to get excited about.

Like said before on this thread. 2 winters in a row have taken its toll along with the amount of tags that have been given out for the past several years. This year i havent seen one buck worth shooting in region g. The herd is in such bad shape im in fear it is loosing its genetics from over hunting. I guess its time to find greener pastures and start applying for colorado and nevada.

Thanks for the tip on the roads. My two teenage sons and I drew tags this year and we'd like to fit in a scouting trip (coming from out of state) before the hunt...
