So I put my 12 and 15 year old daughters in for this hunt based on info from a friend and wouldn't you know it they draw...yeehaaa! Anyway, my focus will be getting them good bucks this year so I'm starting the info inquires early. If you hunted this unit or know anything about this unit and are willing to share we'd appreciate it.

This is a very good unit to draw and a good chance at a 180 plus buck. If you dont know much about the unit or dont have much time to scout it than the best piece of advice I can give you is to hunt the west side of the unit right off the highway and go from there, its just as good as some of the better known units in Idaho and remember they come down low real fast there also.PM me if you want more info im glad to help.

Get over it.

ive never set foot in the Henrys but i apply for it every year. i know its a good unit and ill figure it out if i draw. there are a lot of poeple like that i think.

Every successful mule deer hunter knows, or will soon find that to stay successful you must try new areas.

nonyamt is just flappiing his gums again on what he thinks is an issue when it really isn't. Most people don't have the time or money to go all over scouting and getting familiar with a unit. Cripes, the one buddy I hunt with puts in for 30+ tags every year and there is no way until he draws that we are going to get really involved with the area. We are both working on the hunts he drew in AZ and NM and will be right up until it's time to leave on the hunts. I have received invaluable help form members on this site already, especially on the AZ elk tag he drew.

I understand putting in and drawing units you don't know well, but would not want to hear anyone who did whine if they didn't scout the area before the opener and then had a bad experience -or- complained if they did not get much "net" assistance.

PS my 12 year old son hunted unit 45 5 years ago, which is the brother unit to 52. There are nice bucks that reside in there, so it isn't just a migration unit. So scouting could turn up bucks to chase on the opener. My son killed a buck on the same exact ridge, within 500 yards of where we first saw him 2 months earlier.

Good luck to your girls.

I put in for a hunt I have never done before this year and my son got it. I might even call in for some help too. If you need some info on 52 PM me. Ron

So you apply based on info you gather over the internet and then try to obtain more info over the net if you draw,Gotcha!

How many people know the tough to draw units that nearly everyone seems to apply for?

Sheep for example, so you scout every sheep unit before you dare apply?

Henries deer? Arizona Strip deer?, Montana bighorns? Desert Bighorns anywhere.............?

Damn boy, you are either burning some serious fuel or are only hunting your backyard.

Avid hunters have to play the draw game these days.
That often means unfamiliar country.
Some just don't get it.

Asking for help and putting together a DIY hunt is still far more noble than flipping through a catalog of guided hunts "finding a big one" and buying your trophy IMHO.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-25-11 AT 09:26AM (MST)[p]NONYAMT,Some people enjoy learning and seeing new country. Some of my best hunts were area I'd never been in before. misner5 Good luck on the hunt I've hunted it twice and had good hunts both times.

Well in my case it is a little different. The ML hunt rotates so when we put in for it we knew that at some point we might end up there. I have hunted some of the units for deer and elk. One of the others I hunt for birds. SO in my case I have never packed a deer tag in every unit my son drew for but that doesn't mean I haven't hunted it or know the hunt. Units also change over the years. Ron

I love new areas,I research them,I go to them, shed hunt, scout, ect them I might apply for a tag in a new area, this forum is full of people drawing tags in areas they have never set foot in.I guess the internet is the new scouting trip.

Are you as dense as you come across all the time on these Forums? You keep coming back with the same BS when we start trying to help someone out here on this BB! How the he** do you expect people that live thousands of miles from the Rockies and put in for a bunch of tags every year to do what you are talking about? How far have you gone out from your home to scout a unit before you applied? How many people that are working can up and do what you're saying on any kind of a frequent basis with just the cost of gas alnoe nowadays? If you live in a certain spot where you can do long weekend trips to one of several different states then that's great. When you live a long ways from the western states, reading and picking other people's brains and asking for help on the internet or on the phone are about the only way to learn about a unit.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-25-11 AT 04:23PM (MST)[p]Are you as big of an as$hole as you sound or do you just come off that way?If you apply for an area with nothing but hearsay to go on how do you expect to show up and kill trophy animals? If you are going to focus on killing good bucks why apply in an area you dont have a damn clue about? As stated above dont complain when you dont connect.

No topgun is one helluve a nice guy. You're the one that always seems to be the internet tough guy assh@le. My guess is you only hunt your home state so you have no idea what we're talking about.

I drew the tag also and live 20 miles from there so will be spending alot of time out there. If you run into a long hair tattooed guy in a Ford that will be me. I will be archery hunting in there after deer. I will be out and about in there all summer scouting. Will even pass up my elk hunting till the season is over then go after elk. I will spend all season hunting also. Plan on hunting the 2 weeks that it will be open. Cant wait. Been waiting 13 yrs for this tag.

Misner if you find me out there will try to hook you up with help.

I always thought that these forums helped other hunters out. I like to read about your hunts and hope that we all support hunting rights and wildlife. I'm always willing to help if I can and I have been given help on these forums. Hope to continue to do so. My wife also drew on this tag and I know the eastern half of the unit because of the muzzle loader hunt of last year. I plan on learning the west side also, by scouting and by asking questions on this site in the future. Hopefully, I'll be able to locate a good buck with my wife and she will be successful. Thanks to all of you.
