They Build that Spillway Before Rebar was Invented?

Just Wondering?

...the contractor figured that once poured....no one would ever notice....lots of driveways like that around here.

It was built in 1968 during the 'summer of love', so who knows? :D

If there was rebar it might not have been over lapped enough?

>Hey Elk...why ask...just go there now
>and do a SLIP-N-SLIDE Test

funny, I was thinking they could rent out tubes to ride the spillway, all the money could be put towards a new dam when it does break loose.

They Should Let Liberals/Illegals/Crooked Politicians Slide down it & Let it Gobble them up!

OK!

I'll Be Nice Now! :D

Bess the hole in the spillway is not big enough for our politicians that should be thrown into it.

What they need is a little Dutch boy. Or a big one.

The state had 7 billion to spend on these kind of projects but it's missing ,so Brown wants to raise taxes again.

I think there was a guy who took his jet ski down that......RIP

Trump can't do everything or be everywhere.

Homer, in 2015 the lazy state inspectors stood up at the top and declared the spillway was OK. They were too damn lazy to walk the spillway. If they had done that they might have seen the concrete pad seams had open enough to allow water to seep under the concrete pad and saturate the ground below the pad.
With our liberals in Sacramento those inspectors will probably be promoted instead of demoted to cleaning the latrine.

If the truth were known....the left is so invested in the man made global warming/drought scenario, they probably believed the spillway would never be used again, so why worry about it? California was supposed to dry up and blow away. As it is, I'm sure some are disappointed with all this water.

Two years ago if an engineer published a warning about the condition of the spillway, he would have been laughed at.

we've been over that already NVB.....the contractor pulled it after the 4 pm inspection for the 5 am pour....he used it at his summer house foundation.

Ya think the engineers will recommend using rebar for the fix? I saw some drone camera footage, could see no trace of anything supporting cement...looks like they just poured over the bedrock...is that normal practice?...or was in the days the spillway was constructed?

>Ransom built the Oroville dam?

Now that I think about it, there are huge piles of rebar stacked at Shelter Cove. At least it doesn't burn.

But what Woulda Made a Difference they didn't do!

KALI Whoreds Water!

They Seen the Same Problem & Made Repairs on many other Dams!

But decide to say F'it!

Let's wait & See what Happens!

That Emergency Spillway is a F'N JOKE!

Even with Aerators Installed that Concrete Needs Rebar & Lots of it!

Maybe next time they will cover the concrete with Slip and Slide plastic and open up a water park. :D

That Ain't Near enough Rebar!

But We Know now it had a little rebar in it!

We have over 600 Inches of moist Snow in the Sierra. Apparently deeper and more wet than can be accurately measured fully, per the news.

Sad part is, Southern Cal & the Los Angeles Basin will want, every drop.

And I Quote!

"""NOT A WHOLE LOT OF REBAR"""

They need to look at the Amount of Rebar TARDS Put in Bridges!

They'll have to use the main spillway, but maybe not if they get all the power plant turbines back on line, and the diversion pond dug out so they don't get flooded again.

A lot depends on how much rain they get and how much snow melts.

I would use this. If you can put a screen door in the bottom of a boat surely it would hold a little water.

mainliquid1.jpg

The Sierra Nevada mountians up and down California usually have 5 to 10 feet of snow.
This year, there is 20+ feet of heavy snow pack.
When the summer heat comes and starts melting all that snow, it's going to be flood time all over again.

Probably why they are releasing due to the rain and our snow pack is around 150-175% of normal. That rain along with melting some of the snow pack will fill that lake within days.

$275 million to build a straight shot water slide? JFP!!!

SACRAMENTO ? Three construction contractors have submitted bids to fix Oroville Dam?s two damaged spillways, California water officials said Saturday. The Department of Water Resources said in a statement that the bids are higher than its estimate of $220 million. Kiewit Corp. of Omaha, Neb., made the lowest bid of the three companies, at $275.4 million. Barnard Construction Co. of Bozeman, Mont., bid $277 million. The highest bid, at $344.1 million, was made by Oroville Dam Constructors, the department said. Officials have said they want to have the work done by November 1, ahead of the winter season.

I would like to see the breakdown on that one. I had a project that was 19 acres and it had around 575,000 sqft of concrete and that portion was $6.7 million. Grading, Drainage and Pavement was another $1.6 million. You do the math on their number and it's 39 million a month. That's an impressive project when it's greater than million a day. I've been there when we billed 3 million a month on one project and thought that was a lot.

I know Kiewit and they are capable yet the "FIX" word is scary. It needs to be de-constructed and replaced. That area can be 110 in the summer and freezing in the winter. Old Concrete is just that and needs to be removed.

Those numbers are very low.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-17-17 AT 06:32PM (MST)[p]Gov. Jerry Brown is not happy since he will have to spend some of his "bullet train" money to repair the dam. Oh! I forgot. We live in a state run by progressive liberals that will just add on more taxes to cover it. Brown already wants 42% hike on gas taxes and it was either 45 dollars or 65 dollars added on to our yearly vehicle registration fees. As of 2015 there was 14.5 million vehicles in CA. commercial and private.
His bullet train money is safe.

Yes, And it's going to be inspected this time too. Honest! :D

There is an independent report out to what caused the failure. This guy explains it pretty well. (if you have 15 minutes to waste :))

It's a summary of this article.
