How big do you think this trail cam deer will be?

Best buck on my trail cam so far.. how do you think he will turn out? I would think 27 wide and 160, dont think he is going to fork very good... but many of you are more experienced in this scoring area...

I personally think he's gonna be a little wider than that. He looks like he's a good few inches past his ears aleady on both sides. I think he'll be around 29" or so... And it's kinda hard to see how he's gonna fork from that picture. I would think he would be at least 170". Good buck! I know I would shoot him lol...

I'd have to agree with the other posters.
He'll go 27" at least and probably end up around 175" total.
Just my uneducated 2 cents worth.
Zeke
PS, Where is that exactly? LOL. I'd arrow him!

That buck is going to pass 30 inches and wouldn't be one bit surprised if he goes over 180 imo.

Looks like he is going to be a good one. I would say from that picture he is close to 26" and will hopefully end up around 170"

LAST EDITED ON Jul-11-11 AT 02:03PM (MST)[p]When judging width I have a rule of thumb that I use alot with good results. Most mature deer have 4.5 inches between inner corners of the eyes, this is a very reliable measurement that does not vary much from deer to deer. The other measurement I use is the average mature deer have ears that are 9 inches from tip of the ear to the base. The ear route is not as accurate as the eye route as ears very much more than the eyes. The ear to ear route is the least accurate as I have one mature buck that was only 22" ear to ear and one that is 26" ear to ear. Using my first two routes both ways show this deer already at 30" at his G4's and will probably grow more as they look tipped outward.

26-27 WIDE TOO MUCH TREE TO TELL MUCH ELSE.
KILL HIM, THEN WE WILL KNOW FOR SURE.

Looks to me like he has a good 170 frame. It will depend on how deep his forks will be. It's tough to see from the picture where he forks. He appears to be wide enough to go into the 180's but if he has shallow forks he'll be in the 160's or 170's would be my guess.

that buck is around 30 inches wide imo hard to say what his forks are gonna do but i would bet he will be in the 170's at least definently a shooter buck for any general unit without a doubt. just still got growin to do so hard to say what he will finish up at. get us another pic in a couple weeks
has good mass on him also.

I'd say 26-27, I don't think his forks will get big enough to reach the 170 mark. I think you was pretty close with your original guess of 160, maybe a little more than that.

I respectfully disagree with Mr. double D.

I've shot tons of deer in the last 40+ years of deer hunting and it doesn't take much of a buck to reach 160". This buck should pass the 170+" mark with ease.

I hope you kill him and I'm sure you'll be happy.

The last P&Y buck that I killed was 166" and your trailcam buck is bigger than that already.

Respectfully, Zeke

Who really cares, as he's a good buck and will definitely grow more before he sheds. There are enough naysayers on the Forums that argue with scores even after an animal is taken, the rack is scored and posted on here, LOL!!! The picture shows a nice buck, but who knows what he will end up being with another 6 weeks or so of growth or lack of it.

You have a point there TG.
I'd release the string and not quibble over 10 points.
Zeke

High 170s in the 29 inch wide. Great eyeguards picking up a few extra inches over the norm

Problem here is that I have an elk tag in the cache unit and my main priority is elk, however I have a tag for both so... If he steps out. No hesitation!

Scores are scores. They give us something to talk about aduring the off season. IMO he is a great buck. He has the wow factor with eye guards. No hesitation for me.

nice buck! 26-27 is a bit short! he is easily 3+ inches past each ear! the 26" width would give him less than 20" tip to tip of ears. AND he is still growing! pull back, let er rip!

Zeke, he is my reasoning. Looks like an average size body on that deer, and I would say he has 22 inch ears (although could be 24) lets say he has 2.5 (by my estimate) on the outside of those ears. 22 + 2.5 + 2.5 = 27. I would say he has 6" of eye guards (2.5-3.5), maybe 5" inch tines on each G3 and G4, and I'd say about 11 inch G2's from the horn I can see best. Lets give him a guess of 33 inches of mass, and even be generous (by my guess) and give a 24 inch inside. I am going to say 24" beams to go with that.

All that, in a very quick calculation gives him a rough score of 153, by my calculations. Even if that deer puts on 15 more inches he goes 168. I've killed a handful of 160 and 170 bucks myself, all of which, by my eye, are bigger than this deer.

I am not knocking the deer, just stated my opinion, and now giving my reasoning. I may be a little on the conservative side and it's not the best picture, but I think I am pretty close.

I would say that this years growing conditions have been optimal, and if that's all the size he has put on so far I don't think he will put on another 15". In my opinion, just a younger deer with decent potential, don't think he will ever be a trophy buck, 180+, cause the lack of forks.

Good opinion Mr DD. Well thought out post as well.

I can't argue with anothers opinion even when I don't agree.... totally. Since we don't have the deer in front of us and in our hands I would say your opinion is every bit as valuable as mine.

Thanks,
Zeke

Agreed Zeke, until he kills that buck (hope I don't curse him) all we have is opinions.
