My son drew the youth hunt for 17 this year curious if anyone would be kind enough to help us out with mule deer habits in this unit .We hunted the unit last year in the very southern part around redrock & deersprings unfortunately we did not get any prescout time but this will be corrected.Main questions are are the deer mainly up high & how important is water in factoring concentration.I am not looking for honey holes just stategys or general portions of the unit that tend to hold higher concentrations, last year was abig learning curve compared to whitetails in missouri. Thanks for any help.

This is a long shot as this thread is super old, but I was wondering if you could offer any tips or guidance on hunting mule deer in unit 17. I have always been very into fishing, growing up in New England, but I am a new hunter as of the last couple years when I met my now husband in Colorado. I have taken 2 small bucks with a rifle and am still working hard at my first archery harvest with elk in Colorado. This will be my first time hunting in New Mexico and I was lucky to draw a November Rifle tag. I would be grateful if you can offer any tips, I am willing to put on the miles to find a decent deer, But unfortunately will not be able to get down to scout before season. Not looking for any honey holes, but a general idea of where to concentrate efforts, high/low, water etc would be great. Thanks in advance for any advice.—Meghan, from Colorado
