Wy hunt

I will be hunting both deer and antelope near Rawlings Wy in Oct.

I have been searching the web for a locker plant in Rawlings or some place where I could store my animals. Haven't found any so was wondering if anyone on this forum could tell me who to contact.

I don't know how long I will be staying as it depends on my success. If it is a short hunt I can probably get by with dry ice. Anyone know of a place where I could buy that?

LAST EDITED ON Aug-02-11 AT 03:14PM (MST)[p]I don't live there but there is a good chance that in October, the weather will be cool enough (and cold enough at night) to just hang them in the shade, with a game bag over them. Shade is the problem in that area, however. Maybe there is someone on MM that lives there and will offer you a corner in a barn or shed for a few days. If you're camping maybe you can find some cottonwoods to camp by. Not much help but in October it usually gets cold enough at night to cool an animal down good. I just uncover them at night and wrap them up in an old sleeping bag or cover during the day. Hope this helps a little.

As you said shade is gonna be a major issue in Rawlins... And the greasewood nor sage grows high enough to hang a buck! I'm sure one of the local resturants would let you hang them but I wouldn't touch the meat if anybody from Rawlins got ahold of it... I spent all last summer there workin and if it weren't for the people, it'd be alright.... Good luck I hear there's some monster deer around there and I know we saw over 200 cantelopes a day working out of Wamsutter in the gas fields...

There is a great facility right at/next to Trails West Taxidermy just a mile or two East of Rawlings on the South Highway 80 frontage road. We been taking our animals there the past two seasons and they are nice folks, very clean and professional. I highly recommend their services.

+1 on the outfit by Trailswest. Great folks who do a great job. Between Rawlins and Sinclair.

Thanks for the help and advice. Now all I have to do is get something to haul into the locker.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-08-11 AT 02:14AM (MST)[p]skeet20,

Trails West like the others have already stated is the one and only processor/meat locker in or around Rawlins. They are great people, clean, professional, and most importantly good at what they do, and the guy next door in the taxidermy side is a top notch artist if you are looking for taxi work.

If there is a problem with the town of Rawlins it is the "traveling oil field" hands where the problem begins. The residence of Rawlins are for the most part good people, living here for a summer certainly does not give anyone the right to "intelligently" judge an entire town.

MuleyWarrior,

You are right about the roughneck ppl bringing the town down. I have no doubts about that. There's good people in every town and I met a few for sure. But living there for 10+ weeks gave me a good idea of the town, I didn't just 'pass through'.

Seeing people snort coke in the grocery store parking lot, three different occasions smoking weed in the same place, and every week running errands you couldn't go without seeing 1-5 pregnant girls under 20 grocery shopping with their mom... Kinda leads to the impression that there's better places to live.

Mike,

You are right about some of the things you witnessed, being a single guy at 33 Rawlins does not seem like the logical place to be with the high pregnancy rate and drugs. I can't argue with you there. My issue was the extremely broad statement you made of the the entire town. One thing I will guarntee you is the hunting community in Rawlins, like most, is top notch people. Very few folks in our circle of hunters are of these type of people that you generalized with your comment. I have run across many folks in the country in and around Rawlins in need of a favors, whether it be broke down, stuck, lost, etc. where I would not help a guy out or many of the hunters in Rawlins for that matter.

Not wanting to live here and telling a guy looking for a meat storage that you wouldn't let a sole from Rawlins handle your game are two different scenarios.

There are bad apples no matter where a guy goes, if making broad statements is your thing let me leave you with this. In my experience a guy that keeps his nose to the grind and stays away from shady characters rarely sees this behavior you spoke of. I have lived here for 33 years and rarely have I ever seen anyone in City Market parking lot snorting coke or smoking weed. Makes me wander what type of people you associated with, 33 years vs. your 10 weeks????????

With that I will say thanks for clearing up your position and hope you have a great hunting season.

Tom at Trails West Taxidermy runs the locker plant now. Great guy and very fair. I would talk to him about it before hand.
