Gents,

Headed to BC this October with a WT and MD tag in my pocket.. I will be up near Golden and am just seeing what kind of bucks I can expect to see up in the area....

If actually never hunted mule deer, always been a coues deer man (and still am)...

Thanks!

Oct deer hunt???? Geeze, is that your choice or the outfitter's? Too late for the highcountry and too early for the rut. Depending on where and when in Oct you could catch migrating deer, but typically the big boys won't come down until Nov. If you are looking for any buck, you'll probably have some success. If you are looking for a monster, you'll be in for a tough hunt. I find Oct is one of the hardest months to hunt the big boys. I normally don't even try. I find it's easier on the head to just focus on moose in Oct and wait for the late season to get back chasing monster muleys.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-04-11 AT 11:27PM (MST)[p]Thats the dates that were slotted. The others in the party (I was a late add in) are chasing mountain goats so I kinda had to go when they are. Were hunting from the 18-31st and I know the oufitter, Don Fowler has metioned the migration...

OH, and I'm not looking for a couple of monsters... Id be happy with a 160 class muley and a 140 class whitetail.

Not to burst your bubble but for 99% of the outfitters in this province, a 160 class muley or a 140 class whitetail are indeed considered monsters. Most outfitters have a hard enough time getting that kind of buck killed in the peak of the rut let alone in Oct. A 140-150 class muley and a 110-120 class whitey is a more realistic goal. There are true monster muleys in the Koots, so it is possible to luck into one. It does happen every year. But keep in mind 99% of all monster muleys that are killed in this province are killed in Nov. As for whitetails, BC is not a monster whitetail producer, especially in the south. The vast majority of the monster whiteys live in the Peace, where they get as big as an Alberta or Sask whitey. Down south, a 150 class buck is very rare, and most hunters would give their left nut to kill one.

BCBoy is right, WT down here are hard to find. I've hunted that country just like BCBoy, it'll be damn hard and alot of luck to get a decent(120") wt. Mulies again BC boy is right, Oct sucks.

When in Oct are you going? If its early and you go high you've got a chance, if its late Oct... get some horsehoes and put'em somewhere cause your gonna need'em.

Firstcoues,
A little research here on MM and you could have pulled up numerous posts where I have stated just how bad the outfitters in BC are at killing big deer. It really boils down to them missing the boat years ago and never having the desire to catch up. While trophy mule deer are one of the top desired game animals in North America right now, the BC outfitters have focused on other species making mule deer an add on hunt for cheap. Sell a moose or mountain goat hunt and throw in mule deer as a add on, just in case you run into one while hunting the main focus species. This means 99% of the deer the BC outfitters are killing are how should I say, dinks. What you have seen from me and my buddies posted up on MM are pics of hard-core DIY muley nuts. While we are just weekend warriors, we are serious about muleys and literly kick the GOABC's ass' every year. They don't scout year round. They don't have a clue of the monsters living in their territories. They don't watch deer year in and year out, watching them grow. Heck, a lot of them don't even spend any time in their territory except during hunting season. If they hired guides that know trophy deer and paid them to scout like some of the big name US guides, they would start seeing some giants hit the dirt. But when you sell a 7 day deer hunt for 3 grand, there ain't no money left for scouting. Sorry you are just finding about this now. You should have PM'd me when you were looking at coming to BC and I would have given ya the same info I've given numerous MM members that have PM'd me in the past.

I daydream about the other big BC bucks as well.
The mighty Kispiox river in BC is on my bucket list.
