I'm going to throw this out there. I know I'm gonna get some crazy responses but oh well. I have a friend who swears by this story. He knows a guy who says he can tell you the size/score of a bucks track by the deers track alone. Of course this is accompanied by a story of the guy telling someone...He looked at 2 deer tracks by a water hole and said the one buck is 195-200. They tracked the buck and killed it. The final score was 199. I'm personally calling BS, however my friend is a very trustworthy, NO BS, kinda guy. So that bein said I want to hear other people's take on it. Is/can there be any truth to this. I'm trying to come up with an equation for the circumfrence of the poop to tell me how big the buck is...haha

I figure there a few options.

BS being number 1
He got REAL LUCKY being number 2
The rest fall into the category of prevarications!

Within the shadows, go quietly.

Well, if you guess enough tracks, eventually you will get it right. And he just happened to guess right on this one. Its like looking at a girls hair color and saying she has DD's, it will work once in a while!

almost all big bucks have big feet...but some small bucks have big feet......your friend is a retard....

I am assuming you mean the size/score of the buck's rack and not track as written in the post?

This is so far out there I can't believe I am responding. So when a buck starts to go downhill does his hoof shrink too so this expert can still get the score right? On a year of poor forage and less antler growth, does his hoof shrink so this guy can still get an accurate score? I could go on and on but why?

There is a correlation between hoof size and age/size of a buck but not to the point you can score a rack from it. Heck, most people can't score a rack within 5 inches from a photo.

I'm just a little bit better than your buddy i can pick some deer sh!t up and smell it then tell you how big it is!

For real the guy is an idiot.

Let CUPSY Score the 199" buck!

He's Great at Scoring!

Even better at Pissin people off!

I've seen some real PISSCUTTER bodied Bucks on SJ that hat some Nice Head Gear!

Your Buddy is Full of BULLSSHIT!

Ya,sometimes you can look at a Track & say:Yup,that's a Big Buck!

For GAWDS Sakes Guys,We Got Kids on this Site,Some of them are 65 years Old!:D

I don't care if they're big or small!
If they throw lead I like em all!
:p

Its cuz the front hooves sink deeper into the dirt than the back hooves the bigger the rack is. You can tell its buck tracks because the back hooves fall inside the front hooves in a line of tracks. Does back hooves fall outside the front track in a line of tracks.

One of those statements is total BS the other 2 are actually true!

Oh and buck poop sinks in the toilet while doe poop floats! Wait, is that for deer?

LMFAO!! You kill me dude!!!! :D

It would sure be nice to be able to really tell. Total BS though. One time I took off after some sign that was so big it had to be a buck. Pop my head up over a rise and there she was, an average doe... with big feet!

The part about tracks falling inside or outside the front track is actually true and tested. I found a cool page dedicated to tracking that I found that info on. As a matter of fact it right here:http: //www.ussartf.org/animal_tracking.htm

Go about half way down and look for "reading tracks".

I've used this several times when I had enough track to read and its absolutely true, for deer and elk!

Years ago I tracked and killed a MD buck with the largest MD track/hoof Ive ever seen, looked like a spike elk, buck was a decent 3x4 nothing special, its BS.

BS Big Time!!

The #1 Reason this is impossible is Simple. The body size of a dear varies a too much to calculate it. Certain areas produce bigger size dear (Bodies) than others. The deer on the mountains west of me are bigger than the ones on the mountains east of me. Also, on our farm last year we had a 29.5" four point that went 186" We had a 20" 3 point that we didn't score. The three point had 30 to 60 pounds more on him than the bigger buck. The hoofs were also lots bigger. Most people on this sight have seen the same thing when their family brings home two or more deer. The only thing I can judge the difference is a yearling 2 point verses any buck a year or more older.

I can tell antler size by putting my ear to the ground and feeling the vibrations of a 200" buck that is anywhere with in 22 1/2 miles...

True I tell ya..

Thats what I thought. I told my friend to stop hangin out with homeless transients.

I think you guys are having way too much fun with this.. I actually believe you can tell if its a big Buck or little Buck. no doubt. I have followed bachelor groups and you can see who's track is the biggest and know which one it came from... maybe you all should pay attention to tracks. within 5 point or even 30 points is far fetched though

That is the only reason I don't get involved with the guess the score threads. Nobody ever posts a pic of the foot.

lol... makes me feel a whole lot better about my small rack-ed buck last year with huge feet....you know what they say about big feet...

The only thing you can tell from the size of a deer's track, is how big it's feet are. And on the same train of thought, the only thing you can tell from the size of a deer's poop is how bit the hole was it came out of.

There is some truth to that , as my grandfather used to say that the farther back the dew claw and the longer the hoof of the deer the older it is and the more it should score. as far as narrowing down a bucks gross score by track size im not sure. Simply becasue there are genetics involved all bucks racks are different. I have killed big bodied deer that have had small non typical racks and I have killed deer that had spindly bodies and smaller hooves with 14 points and 28" spreads. So im not sure anyone can say that they can tell what a buck will score by track size.

You guys are all wrong. I measure the size of a buck's pee hole in the dust. It's directly correlated to the size of...

Well, you get the picture.

It was a lucky guess and total BS, but...

If I was following a big track and a small track in fresh snow and they split and went separate ways and I had to choose which ones to follow...I would stay on the track of the big one. I think all of you would too.

Like all exaggerations and stereotypes, there is always truth in there somewhere.

The biggest deer I have ever seen in real life had tracks that looked like a cow elk. They were unbelievable.

Grizzly

>What about after he sheds his
>antlers? How big are his
>tracks then?

He doesn't leave tracks then...Geez.

I know one thing from personal experience..if I find a big buck track I follow it down to see what kind of head gear he's wearin'!!

So much crap here, I am to find my shovel and boots cause it is pouring out of my speakers!

On the serious side, only way possible is if the deer has a "known" unique track and you were able to see the deer make the track and were guessing the score of the rack.

I once had a high school friend conviced that I had 3 Jack-a-lopes scouted out on my parents property...

I'm old enough to know that just because I can't do something it doesn't mean it can't be done.
I still have to call BS on "scoring" a buck from the track.
Big or small, buck or doe.... yes, but the actual, within an inch, score. NO WHEY MR CURD MAN.

"Heck, most people can't score a rack within 5 inches from a photo."

Most people can't score a buck within 5 inches with a tape and antlers in hand!

Hornkiller,
You might be able to tell how big they are from the smell but U have to taste them... That way i get within 1/8 of an inch. Last year I hate about 5 pounds and finally shot a 130 class buck.

It was a big bodied 2 point.

Not all big bucks have big tracks. Totally depends on the ground that the buck has spent the majority of his life living on. Steep rocky terrain and they can easily grind a lot off their hooves. I once tracked a wounded old monster for 3 and 1/2 weeks. He had very small front feet and big back feet. The tracks looked like a doe and a big buck together. I had watched this buck for years and in his prime this buck was a TANK in both body size and antler size (easily 300+ lbs and 225 inches). He was old and regressed in both body and antler when I finally caught up with him and killed him on the last day of the season.
