I recently purchased a area 301 landowner tag for an ranch about 15 miles north of Craig Co. Wonder if anybody on MM. has any experience in this area and could give me any idea of number of deer and possible trophy Quality. Any Info would be appreciated. Thanx

What season? This unit is a migratory unit for deer. Their are some resident deer but not many. 3 and 301 lost a lot of deer a few winters back but they are slowly rebounding so you should have a fun time. A good buck for this unit is a 150 to 160 inch buck but their are a few better deer their. Who's ranch did you buy a tag on?

While 301 is a migratory unit, there are a lot of resident deer on private land in the area. You'll have excellent hunting. While I've never hunted in 301, I have in unit 3 and units a little to the south. We often drive through 301 when we're done hunting just to see all the deer in the fields.

Good tag. Hold off on the trigger and do not shoot the first 150 buck you see, these are fairly common depending on the ranch. If you have a 3rd season tag even better. We have been up in that area several times during the hunting seasons and the later it gets the more and bigger the bucks you will see. I have personally seen 2 harvested bucks that where well over 180 and have seen another dozen on the hoof of the same caliber. But it does depend upon the ranch. Animal numbers are good in that area so even if you don't see a real hoss you should have a great hunt. Show some pictures when your done, big or small we love um all!!

Are you hunting the Cameletti property?
Raftoplis property?or the Steele property?

I have hunted them all and can give you a few pointers!
First we go to the Kum & GO for a gut bomb burrito and then we will talk!! LOL! GOOD LUCK! LOTS OF ANIMALS!LOTS OF FUN!
ENJOY ALL OF IT !

Red dog how did you like goug and Janet cameletti ? I grew up with their daughters they are good people. We bought a few black angus bulls from Doug.
If you see a 160 inch buck in either unit you should probably shoot it ! I don't buy into you seeing a bunch of 160 plus bucks in either unit. But you should have a great fun hunt just enjoy northwest Colorado because their is no place like it on earth!!!!

LAST EDITED ON Aug-13-11 AT 08:29PM (MST)[p]Yes! Janet and Dough are gret folks; there are many great folks from that part of Co.A 160 class buck is a very good mark to shoot for.Being on private ground like that always helps, patience is key and the third season, *weather & the start of the rut* Polejockey should have a great time!
And by the way,it would not hurt to have an OTC BULL TAG in your pocket, for you will be in the path of the migration*IF THE weather works; at that time of the year there is a good chance it will! Good Luck! I will be in the Golden Cavey having a plate of chicken wings and an ice tea waiting for the forth season. AND I CANT WAIT!!!!!! HAPPY TRAILS

Read carefully because this is not what I said. Also unit 3 is not being referenced just 301.

The bucks weren't just everywhere they are located near Baggs on pvt land. Not sure of who's land specifically other than not being BLM. Either way you will have a good hunt.

Tailchaser try not to turn this into a pissing match . 160 inch bucks don't grow on trees up their. I gave him good info if he passes on a 150 inch buck good for him but I would not. Most of the private just south of baggs is peroulis brothers they run a big sheep operation.
