To the light bulb on the mountain today:

In what world did you think you could stalk across an open basin with cover no higher than your knee on a group of a dozen bucks and think they weren't going to notice you?

Follow up question:

Did you realize I had set up before light just inside the group of trees at the bottom of the basin that they had been bedding in each day for the past week and that's exactly where they were headed again today until you showed up?

Ben Thompson must be away from his computer to answer your question. Did his headdress skyline the whole stalk or what? LOL Sorry you hunt was f-ed up, thats "pubic" land hunting!!

LAST EDITED ON Aug-20-11 AT 10:10PM (MST)[p]Man, I feel your frustration! Its happened to me, and I'm sure, I've (not intentionally) done it to others.

Is it an optimal stalk? No

Can a patient, experienced hunter make that stalk? Yes.

Can a novice hunter? 1 in 10,000.

Sorry your day got ruined, SureShot. Hang in there!

Edit- I was gonna tell you about the time....but it wouldn't help your situation.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-21-11 AT 00:36AM (MST)[p]One of the great parts of bowhunting! If you were in camo, then no he probably did not know you were there. If he is an average hunter, no he did not know what the bucks were going to as he had not been scouting?

More archery tags I hear many say? Are all the hardcore archers really in support of that???

Sorry your time and dedication scouting this summer was hijacked!!! Been there done that for sure!!!!! Hope they fall back into their pattern for you as the weekend ends and the pressure eases!!!

So there was only one Light Bulb?

That ain't bad!

A few years back on the South Slope I had been watching anywhere from 15-20 Bulls for weeks!

Hunted 'Right' somebody woulda took a Bull or two outa there!

Thanks to the Light Bulbs, approximately a dozen or so at 4-6 AM waltzing all over, it was over before it started, completely pushed out long before daylight!

I was helping a Youth Hunter, there shoulda been some Blood Drawn, but not with that many JACKASSES around!

It's also a Good Hike back in there, was surprised that many No-Nothins had the Ambition to F'it up for everybody, but then again,We are in TARDville!

For GAWDS Sakes Guys,We Got Kids on this Site,Some of them are 65 years Old!:D

I don't care if they're big or small!
If they throw lead I like em all!
:p

TO bad your plan got messed up. Remember that when you hunt public land you are going to have encounters with others. To the person that messed you up they probably thought they had a good plan and probably didn't know you were there. I hunt the open terrain of SD and yes it is very possible to stalk deer without much cover. Also you don't learn what not to do untill you make the mistake yourself.

I feel your frustration, but. . . . . . . This is public land hunting. All of the other posts hit it right on the head. Live and learn

I'll tell you who it was . . . it was that D@MN Sasquatch!

SureShot, I know you're bigger than that. A minor set back for an experienced wiley hunter as you.

Same kinda thing happened to me. I hiked in 2 days before the hunt to do some last minute scouting and when I got up there some guy was up there just walking around everywhere spooking all the deer. People like that drive me crazy.

I feel your pain bro.

There are plenty of hunters who will accidently mess you up and there are plenty of hunters who will do it even if they know you're there.

The problem is: You had a good plan and they had a bad plan!

I love public land but we've all dealt with the same sheite.

I got a guy thats walking through all the bedding areas for elk bugleing and cow calling, not worried about scent control or anything, i feel the elk will be call wise before anybody gets a chance to hunt

To me its sad when I see someone advocate not seeing anyone out hunting on public land. Its this "its my mountain attitude that gets me going." Guess what if you go durring the middle of the week you wont see anyone. Opening morning is a crap shoot on any unit in this state. Sure you will have company! Who gives a rip! Learn how to hunt around the rest and you will still have your opertunities. Like I said if you want to see less people hunt durring the middle of the week and avoid the weekends. Its really is that simple!

You think general land is crowded try a Le Unit. You will see just as many people hunting and ten times the spotters!

Im sure we have all had those frustrations and encounters. As well, we have probably done it to others not even having a clue that someone was already there. Many years back, I put a stalk on a buck that I glassed up, got with in about 100 yards of where I thought he was, went to peak up to see if he was still there and... I got the holy living crap scared out of me, when a guy in a tree stand said, "hey kid hes already gone!" The guy had been sitting there for a couple of days and had too patterned the buck or bucks and was just waiting for the right moment. He was an older gentlemen and did not get mad as we just came to some mental agreement that it was public land.
The worst thing that happen to me: I was actually about 300 yards from a buck during archery trying to figure out what was the next step when I heard a frickin quad coming up the basin! I was thinking you have to be kidding me, but apparently he saw the buck too and decided to just drive up to it? To my suprise he drove within what it looked like to be only 60 or 70 yards, the guy stops jump off with bow in hand, draws. This is no joke, the buck jumps up stands broadside like what the hell>??? I see the guy shoot but he misses, buck runs off.
It still amazes me, so each have their own way of stalking I guess.

Your last comment about stalking in an open meadow. Did it! The wind was in my face and the buck was bedded facing about a 90 degree to the wind. I crawled, walked on all fours, sometimes walking bent over, what ever I could do. Got with in 40 yards, drew my bow and whistled cuz it was the only thing I could think of. The buck just turned his head full alert!! It seemed like a frickin eternity. He jumped up took 2 steps and stopped, his next 20 steps were his last! So it can be done, with a little luck.
Public land is tough, especially here in Kali with all these people, use them to your advantage it works. Hope this helps and hang in there.

Sorry to hear about the blown opportunity, especially after taking the time to pattern the group of bucks. You may just have to consider what happened as another scouting event. Now you know where the bucks alternate escape route is. I have no tags this year. I'm very much considering going to my normal hunting grounds, setting up high with my spotter, and trying to understand opening day escape routes. It will be a different perspective and maybe I'll learn something that I would have never found out with a tag in hand.

Best of luck on your next opportunity.

I feel your pain, a couple of years ago I had patterned a couple nice bucks in a meadow so my dad and I set up a couple of tree stands where they entered. we arrived about 45 minutes before light and sat for about 1-1/2 hours before I spotted some does entering, 15 minutes later they bolted and I could not figure out why, then I noticed two hunters sneaking around the perimiter. I waited and watched them as they came around to about 60 yards from me then I was able to get there attention and let them know that I was there and my father was almost directly above them in a stand. I am not upset that they were there hunting but is what they did after they saw us that irritated me. they got up and walked to the middle of the meadow in open site and started picking and eating wild rasberries as if to purposely ruin the hunt. Later they told a mutual friend that my father and I scared all the dear out of the area!
