Rattling for muleys

Does rattling for muleys work during the rut? I've heard different things and am skeptical

First I'll say I've never done it.

Then I'll say I think Pre rut would be a better time to try it. By the time the actual Rut starts, the pecking order is established and a muture buck won't leave his does to come check out two "fighting bucks".

i hunt whitetails and our riverbottom land while i was rattling for whitetails i had about 10 mule deer does and a little 2x2 muley come in to see what the fuss was about. they looked around for the source of noise then walked off.

other than that i really dont know how well it will work

I've tried it several times it worked every time on 2 point bucks who were probably just curious. Never did have a bigger buck come in.

I've had limited success rattling in muleys by clankin' 2 sheds together. But...I've had tremendous success on Rakin' bucks in. Take a shed and beat brush and burp like a buck on the prowl. I carry a big shed as big sheds have a big sound to them. If you use a smaller shed, you'll only get small bucks. The big boys only care about fightin' another big boy. They don't even give a second thought to a small buck rakin' his antlers. I use these 2 techniques in the pre rut and the peak rut. Post rut you'll see them bail the other way as they are flat out tired of fightin and just wanna heal up.

BC,

I've asked you about the burping thing before. Do you have footage of you doing this? I seriously am interested in this tactic. Please post if you can. Thanks.

SneakAttack, as often as you freaking belch I'm surprised you haven't accidentally called in a BIG old buck yet! Maybe that's how you got the ones that are hanging on your wall?... :)

Yes it works, I have done it a few times.I ratle and rack the trees, rocks and ground so it sound just like a fight, I have had both good bucks and small bucks come in. Works great during the rut.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-12-11 AT 05:21PM (MST)[p]I've never tried it with muleys but I've talked to a few older guys who say that it only works if you've got a pretty high concentration of bucks in an area. With just a few bucks in an area, it seems that the bucks just take their does elsewhere rather than fight. However, if there are alot of bucks in an area, moving the harem would not do much good since the buck probably just run into another buck and have to fight anyway so it pays off to win the fight so you can keep your territory and harem. Seems to make sense.
I've seen that behavior with elk. Last year, a buddy and I were trying to nail a big bull in an area with him (monster 7-pt) and then just a bunch of raghorns and 5-pts. Everytime we bugled, broke branches, etc, he would just take his cows out of the area. He answered us, he was worked up and everything but he knew he could just move his girls without having to fight. We tried sounding like a big bull, a small bull, a bull with cows, everthing, he just didn't want a fight. He had about 40 cows and he was content to just keep them. We chased him all season and he never came in. Most of the small bulls were willing to come in though.
Big muleys may act similar.

Sneak,
I don't think I actually have footage of the actual art of swallowing air and letting it out as a belch but that is in fact what I do. Here is footage of one buck I burped in. There is actual burping on another clip of this buck that I have on tape but never made into a downloadable clip. I got between this buck and his hot does. He wanted to get back to the doe badly but he thought I was another big buck and was afraid I was going to kick his ass. This footage was under 20 yards. I leaned the rifle against a tree and grabbed the camera and played with this buck's head. Luckily my buddy knows a big buck when he sees one and killed this buck 2 days later. I really underestimated this buck. That weak G3 on his one side through me off. Was a blast playing with this buck for over 20 mins though. I finally stood down and let him get back to his does.

Since I still hunt timber in the late season, I burp and rake all the time. If you actually watch bucks on the prowl, they are pretty damn noisy. I find it allows me to calm deer down that I jump up from their beds. Even does that are ready to bail and take everything out of there with them will just think, "Oh, just another damn rutted up buck" and they will let me walk right past. I've turned many a big buck around that all I had was a look of asses and antlers. They rear around with ears pinned back ready for a fight. I've actually even missed bucks and stopped them with a burp and turned them around.

I have rattled and burped in a lot of bucks for photography purposes. Works really well. I also have used a fawn in distress call during the rut to get that doe to come in that has the buck on her ass but I can't get closer. The fawn in distress call will bring that doe in on a rope and the buck will just follow her right in. If the buck is alone he won't likely come to the call.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-13-11 AT 07:35AM (MST)[p]Thanks BC. That's a great buck for sure. Good deal that your buddy was able to hammer him.

All I can say is that if I can capitalize on my ability to belch...watch out buddy! What kind of fee could I charge the Gov. tag holder to burp in a big nasty on the Island?
