Central Utah Gen Hunt ?

I use to hunt the book cliffs when it was not a draw and we had a few great an memorable hunts. What I liked best was it was an over the counter hunt so you could count on hunting an area you knew. Now with a girlfriend and three boy almost to hunting age, I am trying to locate a place with the ability to draw a tag every year and get the kids excited about deer hunting.

I was wondering and have been looking at the following area's in the central utah unit, Conger Range, sawtooth mountain, and howell peak. I don't believe any of them are in the vernod desert unit, so should be able to draw every year.

I would appreciate any experience anyone has with this area....Thanks in advance.

Don't know those areas, but I do know that you might not draw it every year. There are more applicants than tags usually.

Just like any other open deer unit. There are not a lot of bucks and the bucks that are far from shooters. You may stumble on to a 24" buck every once in a while but it's a tough hunt. Savage is right, you won't draw it every year. You may draw it every other year, especially as a NR.

It's always an adventure!!!

I am not familiar with the areas you are asking about in the Centeral Region.

For residents, the best way to garuntee yourself a tag in the Centeral Region is to get involved with the Dedicated Hunter Program. If you don't know about the program then just ask me and I'll answer that question for you as well.

As far as areas to hunt. I hunt the Centeral region every year. I see at least two or three 24" bucks each year. They are there but the area I see them in is rough, in the back country away from roads at least 4 miles, steep, often covered by snow, suprisingly heavily hunted by others, and in the basins of 10,000 foot peaks.

The bucks are there in the Centeral Region if you push yourself to get away from the roads at least a few miles. But, that is true of all regions in the state.

Get on top of a big mountain with some water by it and at least 2 miles away from any roads. Also try to pick rough areas. I took my 10 year old last year and he did fine. Your boys will love it and have a greater respect for the hunt.

Good luck finding out more on the ares you had questions about.

The central is definitely not guaranteed. Northern areas are typically higher odds of being drawn every year. They probably have bigger bucks too. Just something to consider.

Off the subject a bit, by looking at the odds in the proclamation and tables, it is still difficult to figure out how many points it takes to draw Southern Utah non-res. Would 2 points do it? Anyone know?
