If your out hunting this season try to save your capes. If you get the chance look on eBay and see how much these capes are selling for. If you decide on keeping your cape or you give it to a taxidermist try to cape it out past the front legs and down the middle of the back. If you harvest a nice bull Elk in say a state like AZ in September and you want to get it mounted most of the time the cape isn't very good due to the rut that time of year. It would be nice if the taxidermist had a few extra capes around he could offer you for that once and a lifetime mount. Good luck on your hunt!:)

LAST EDITED ON Sep-15-11 AT 11:58AM (MST)[p]Good Advice. I wanna cry every time i see a big buck with the cape cut off at the neck. And If anyone in Cache Valley needs help caping there Deer or Elk I would be happy to help. And if you don't want it I would be happy to take it off your hands.

Also if your going to cape and animal make sure you get it taken care of fairly quick. Especially if its warm weather.

How about some recommendations for us amateurs on caping? Technique, where to cut, etc... Thanks.

no matter what kind of animal i get i take capes in, and if i know someone who doesnt want one i take in. some taxdermist will skin it off the head for you and will give you cash, or credit. easy way to make money or when it comes time to do a mount you have the thing paid off with credit.

If I wanted a Euro mount done, are there many taxi's that would knock something off the price if I gave them the cape? Preferably in Davis/Weber county, but would go a little farther too.

Here are the basics for getting the cape off the body. Its a little more work to get it off the skull and should be done by Taxidermist or someone with the know how. And to the cure question you dont really wanna put salt on it until you have all the meat fleshed off and everything turned. Just get it off the body and into the freezer as fast as you can if you cant get it to someone to finish it.

There are a few hunters out there that have not shot as many booner bucks as you and need a little help here and there so give em a break. Not everyone is as cool as you and shoots 200 plus deer and 400 plus elk every year off of general units. Thanks for the reminders on proper caping Browning.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-16-11 AT 09:35AM (MST)[p]Horn_star I don't think you've ever done anything on this site other than put other people down and act like you're the hottest thing in the hunting world. Shut the heck up.

Cheater I know Wasatach Ridge Taxidermy In Bountiful will take off money on european mounts for good capes.

I do discounts on euro's for capes, if they are nice. Some taxi's do and some dont WRT.

Figure B is not correct. The leg cuts need to be down the very back of the leg and never through the armpits.

That is great advice! It hurts to see a picture of a buck or bull with the head cut off at the neck. The capes are always worth something. Whether it be cash in hand or a discount on future work. And if you are not interested in cash or a discount you can donate it to someone who might have accidently ruined theirs. Also here in Henderson, NV my taxidermists will even pay for the legs off your animal. If you can haul it then bring it in. Someone will appreciate it and you might even make a few bucks.

I know a way that involves a rock, some rope, and a pickup truck. Would you like to learn that method? Didn't think so.
