They're both good bucks. The first does look young with alot of potential. The second one heavier. A toss up IMO. Congrats to your dad though.

Congrats to your dad. Looks like he shot the one that tripped his trigger and thats what matters. That first buck is very nice and will be a stud next year so someone has your dad to thank.

Looks like a win/win to me. I would have a hard time picking. What sounds better without seeing the pictures a)24" 5x4 with a kicker or b)30" 4x3. Its a good problem to have.

Your dad made the right choice. And I respect him for his decision not many hunters can pass on deer that nice because they think it looks young. If more people out west would have the mentality that the easterners have with letting deer mature before shooting them. We would have alot healthier deer herd with more big mature bucks running around

That 1st buck will spread his genes for one more year at least and he will be even better next year. Your dad made the right choice- it's hard to find a buck as wide as the one he got and with a little luck you might run into buck one another time!

I like the way your Pops did it. You should hope to draw a tag for that unit next year and hope he makes it thru this year.

Thanks for the giggle -Z-.

I think I would have killed the same buck your dad did. Heavy bases with big eye guards and wide.

Look out Forkie, FTW is watching us!

I like the wide buck, so I would have shot the same one as your dad.

But that is not a bad problem to have there!

nope it was our second day out there and the first day was fogged in so we hadnt seen much. we saw 8 little bucks the first day but that cheater buck was the first big one we had come across. dad is almost 60 and has never killed a 30" buck and that was what he really wanted. when we saw the buck he killed i guessed it at 29" but it ended up being 30.5" so he was thrilled as hell. he even got choked up when we got to him on the ground. it was a pretty awesome day!
