Potential??

There aren't very many nontypical bucks up where I hunt but have seen this guy several times this year in the velvet and finally got him on a camera. He's only a 3x4 main frame but has a kicker on each side. Do you guys think that frame has potential to turn into anything good the next few years?? I don't think he'd brake 130" right now...I might find out exactly what he scores this week though since my dad and cousin both have muzz tags and have both said they would shoot.

~Z~, that young buck looks to have tons of potential to me. If on my place, he'd be #1 buck not to shoot! I hope your Dad and Cousin can find other more mature bucks to fill their tags with and not take this comer just because he has extra points.

He definitely has some potential. How much? I dont know, but he sure could be something special in a few years. You should convince them to keep this buck walking. Its a shitty feeling shooting a young one and then wondering "what could have been?" Ive done it once, wont happen again. Good luck!

I do agree he needs to live on but unfortunately I'm not the hunter this week. I can probably talk my dad out of shooting it since I'll be with him most of the hunt but my cousin will shoot pretty much anything with any size rack on its head in a heartbeat...that's just how he is. If it does survive the muzz hunt then it's gotta make it thru the buck/bull combo (2 more cousins with tags) and the rifle hunt (2 more tags). I'll cross my fingers for the little guy cuz I would really like to see what he looks like in 3-4 years!!

Better go and doing some shooting around him now and hope he finds out that you guys mean business. I would love to see what he could turn into in a couple of years. BUT He would have to make a few seasons to do that.

Young buck with potential, but to definitely know, he would have to survive a couple of seasons. Might be hard given he's already a nice looking buck.

I like the idea of keeping him alive by keeping him on his toes. Break out your painball/airsoft gun and shoot him a few times with that, it'll keep him smart and may let him mature. Looks like he would be a dandy in 2-3 years! Keep us updated!

I love this post; it is a perfect example of how things work, especially if you live in utah where i do. That buck is dead regardless of what any of us say. Too many hunters will kill that buck and never give it a chance to grow up. If these fellas pass it up it will get killed by the next guy in line. Only if a buck gets lucky and makes it through a few years on public land then it may be smart enough to avoid being killed. Too many hunters need to fill there tag and feel macho here in utah. If that was a buck that was on private or where you know it will survive I would man up and say nobody shoots at this deer!! We all love to hunt for nice deer, that is why I can't understand taking a buck like that this year. But we are the minority who care about hunting and the future here on this website. The reality is most hunters shoot that buck as soon as they see it. Am I wrong? That is the reason I never hunt or even get excited about hunting a general tag here in utah in most places. So what is the circumstances here? Public or does this buck have a chance to grow old?

He's on private property so there is a possibility he can evade hunters but only if he stays on the other side of the fence where there's very little pressure and more trophy hunters...Once he's on this side he has a fleet of uncles and cousins of mine who would all want him dead asap. If he's smart he'll live, if not he's in big ass trouble...

Looks like a buck with decent mass, in my book, that is a great harvest (every buck has great potential you just never know) and hope your kids enjoyed the experience.
