Traverlers of the west................... where do you eat, coming and going.

Coming back from Alberta in July, we spent a night in Great Falls, Montana. Did a TripAdvisor search for a good restaurant. A place called Jaker's Bar and Grill rated pretty high on the list. Now............ as y'all know, all Bar & Grills are not created equal. I've tried more than one that was uninspiring, to say the least..... other's have been great.

Jaker's in Great Falls, was off the charts outstanding. Warm western atmosphere. A great salad bar, a soup bar with 4 or 5 choices of amazing concoctions. The lobster bistro was absolutely out of this world. Best soup I've ever tasted. Followed by a ribeye that rivals Steve's Steak House meat, here in Richfield.

I see there are other Jaker's Bar and Grill in other Montana and Idaho cities. Been wondering if their menu is as good as the one in Great Falls. Anyone been to a different Jaker's.

So............ what's your favorite place to chow down, while moving about the west? I'd hate to drive by a winner, and settle for a Subway or a bag of Flying J's deep fried gizzards, if I'm ever in the neighborhood.

Moondance Cafe in Victor Montana- from the best breakfast to the best Burger. That woman makes everything from scratch.
I wish that place was in Idaho Falls.

Has anyone mentioned the Star Hotel in Elko? You have to eat there to believe it. I was there in September and I'm still full.

Ray?s Tavern in Green River, Utah. Perhaps it is the cheeseburger in paradise complex...I've usuallly been out in the boonies for a few days when I stop there,.

Cmon DC what about Mom's home cooking in your neck of the woods. I always stop there for the chicken fried steak and the scones are off the hook with honey.
Regular stop on the way to Grandma's house in Grand Junction

The search for the perfect chicken fried steak started out quite innocently.
We were going through Fairview, Ut. and stopped at the Home Plate for lunch. While walking to the front door I told the guys that I could divine what the "today's special" would be. They wanted to know if I was a regular or had inside knowledge........I replied that that no inside knowledge was necessary because mere odds say that 82.76% of small restaurants out West have chicken fried steak as their "special".

PS: The Home Plate also had good food!

San Franciso is out West and here 2lumpy is a 3 Star (International Score) that may not have room for your 5th Wheel but a Dinner they do have.

On our way to anywhere via the 15 North, we pass the Chuck-a-Rama in St. George and ALWAYS say that we cant wait to stop there on the way BACK home. That's the tradition...stop for dinner at Chuck-a-Rama. I was not looking forward to it the first time we tried it. Who ever likes and I mean REALLY likes a buffet? Gotta say this is the best food ever. No matter what time of year, they've got Thanksgiving dinner. That's our go to when we're traveling the 15.

I also have had a few meals in Glenwood, Utah. Great food, better company and the deer in the backyard are always fun to watch.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-30-17 AT 00:08AM (MST)[p]Good job boys, great recommendations. Jag, you've are taking the lead coming down the back stretch. I know you Calif boys have bigger budgets, I never thought I need to put a ceiling on the price for the meal, but you won a blue ribbon for top priced dinner with that one.

I once had a meal in Chicago, what averaged $280.00 a piece, for 16 of us. Bill came to nearly $4,500 and there wasn't a nickels worth of wine on the tab. The Boss was feeling exceptionally proud of the sales team on that occasion. The most impressive part of the meal was a beef steak, covered an inch deep with sliced lobster tail medallions and smothered in some kind of amazing gravy. It was epic.

I think, on average, coming out of the turn, on the home stretch, the Star Hotel in Reno, I mean in Elko, is pulling away, but we've made some good recommendations in a lot of places I get to, so we're getting there.

Wiz, I was wondering if you've ever had chirozo and eggs? Bet that Chuck O Rama in St. Georgey don't server chirozo and eggs, so how can it be a contender?

Mom Cafe in Salina, hhhhmmmm you know, 53, where a guy pulls off to eat says a lot about him. Course, I've belled up there are time or two myself. Those ole gals are still wearing those green dresses and white aprons, the last time I checked. Straight out a the 1950's right there. And........... as has been stated previously, "chicken fried stake" is the highlight on the menu. An original greasy spoon classic. Oh...........hey, they got a face lift last year, someone run a diesel pickup right through their front door an blew out that big picture window, made the front page of the Salina Sun by golly.

Anybody from Montana got another opinion on Jaker's, or did was I just having a sweet dream the night I dined there?

I'm thinking there's got be some more, Star Hotels type eateries along the highways and biways that can do a little better than CFS or a buffet without chirozo. Let's hear about'em.

I got to agree with the other I 70 Warriors Ray's Tavern Green River.

Maria's New Mexican Kitchen Santa Fe.

Chicken Fried Steak
The Wooden Nickel Crested Butte.

So Lumpy after the accident what does the old place look like. Did they screw up their pictures of the stars that have eaten there. LOL

I don't think that place has changed since I was a kid still out of the 50's as you say.

love the scones there always get one to go. I'll have to try the star next time I go up 50 on the way home from Colorado.

Feddoc if you tried la posts and liked it, you should try some of the actual Mexican food restaurants in mesilla/ las cruces. I'm from las cruces, and there are several better here. Nellies is probably the best by far, if you can handle the heat. My favorite is either sparkys in hatch, nm or lotaburger by my house. If you like green Chile, there's nothing better than getting it from the source..... and since I live near hatch, it doesn't get better.

wishing to be hunting right now!*

I've got about 40lbs of Hatch green Chile in my freezer. Some chopped and some whole. Kids from my old High School do a fundraiser with it.

From the old days we always celebrate a harvested animal with a victory burger and from way back there was no Chili burger better then the little Red caf? in New Meadows Idaho. Not there any more. Now R and R in Wallowa Oregon has served up some mighty fine vitals. If Chicken fried steak is high on your list there is one you need to stop and get at North Powder Oregon on I84 about two hours west of Boise. It is a two plate breakfast or dinner. Add a cinnamon roll and you wont walk for a week.

I love hitting local joints when passing through small towns my favorite pizza joint is Josephine's in north fork ID. And there's a great Diner on the south exit of Dillon MT but I can't remember the name.

DC-I had forgotten the chorizo and eggs breakfast. Come to Santa Maria and that is almost as common as a good menudo breakfast. But...still no comparison to Chuck-a-Rama. :)

Never chowed down on a Basque meal Homer, I'm thinking you might know your way around a bowl of marmitako or lamb stew.

Do they keep a shaker of paprika and cayenne pepper next to the salt and black pepper?

CreoLa Bistro in San Carlos, Ca
If you need extra spices in this restaurant it means your taste buds are burned out.

2lumpy - yes, the Jaker's restaurants are consistently good, if you can afford them - not the sort of place you want to roll into with a large family on a budget if you know what I mean.

"The Star Was Reasonable for the Quality & The Quantity of Food they Served"

A BobCat "truism", for sure!

As it should be, it cost more to serve the real good stuff than it does to serve burgers, beans, rice and chicken fried steak, an the good stuff tastes better no matter how good Mom's cooks their CFS. I never complain for what quality costs. In food or diamonds. :D

I remember an old saying the "Utah Woolen Mills" used to use in there TV ads, for their wool suits, it went something like this: We have no complaints about how inexpensive our competition's suits are, THEY KNOW, better than anyone, what their suits are worth."

Restaurant food is the same way, chicken fried steak is worth $8 to $12, burgers are $6 to $10, beans, rice and shredded pork $10 to $20.......... high grade beef and lobster, a few dollars more, quite a few dollars more, in most cases. But like the ole Woolen Mills folks said, "ya gets what ya pays for".

I eat a lot of tacos, beans and rice, CFS, and I've eat my share of Ray's burgers in Green River, but...... once in a while, when I'm traveling, and in someone else's back yard, I like to spring for the good stuff.

I can tell you one thing boys, next time I pass through Elko, I'm eating at the Star Hotel, thanks to Homer sharing his secrets!!

I ate at a little Italian place in Meeker last year with elks96 but don't remember the name of it. I don't think there could be more than 1 or 2 there.

DC- Maybe next December we'll treat you to another meal of chorizo and eggs. As long as you make that home made bread, we're good. :)

Dang right Wiz, lets plan on it. I'll break out some Roger's Golden Syrup from my secret stash. Hot bread, with Roger's Golden, and Wisz chorizo and eggs. Who needs a restaurant?

It not a Western State but if you're ever hunting in Alberta or attending the Calgary Stampede, and the price of a world class ribeye doesn't spoil your appetite, DO NOT, for any reason, miss going to Caesars Steak House, down town location. Same owners since 1972, best steaks in Alberta, bar none.

Ask the waiter why their steaks taste so much better than any you've ever eaten!!!!
