I have enjoyed reading everyones hunt stories on MM so I thought I would share mine. Mine started in February when I hit the lottery and drew a expo tag, muzzleloader deer for the Book Cliffs. Before you go thinking I am one of those out of state hunters with deep pockets I will tell you thats not the case. I am a auto mechanic and my wife sells paint. My wife travels alot with her work so see builds up air miles pretty quick and a few free hotel stays along the way. I am a sucker for a good sportsmans show so I bummed a airline ticket and hotel from my wife and flew to Salt Lake last winter. If I knew the odds were as bad as they are I would have never spent the money on the tickets. The website made the odds look like 100:1 not the actual 1500:1. Well my friends call me lucky.

Once I found out I had drawn a tag I came on MM and ran searches for "Book Cliffs Deer". I found several pictures and stories that really got my blood pumping. The bucks guys were "settling" for were much bigger than anything I had ever killed. This is going to be a long summer. I posted a few basic questions and got help for many MM'ers. They were a tremendous help and and took much of the worry out of planning my trip and its ultimate success.

Next was a trip to sportsmans warehouse to get a new muzzleloader. The rules in Utah are not as restrictive as Oregon. We are not allowed 209 primers, 1x scopes, or sabots. Again the MM'ers in the muzzleloader forum helped me with different loads and I had it shooting great in no time. Man I wish I could use this gun here at home!

Now it was time to scout. I poured over maps, bought the nat geo topo program for my computer, and spent hours looking at Google Earth. But nothing was going to substitute putting the boots to the ground. Soon I formed a plan to spend some time in the unit. Again using my wifes air miles I would fly to Utah and rent a SUV. But thats when things headed south. My dad was stricken by cancer and things did not look good. Going on my hunt was in doubt and scouting was out. After spending 2 months in the hospital he was put in hospice at a local nursing home. Three weeks later he made a turn around and began physical theropy. Two weeks later he was fired by hospice and sent home. He continues to improve even today.

With dads improvement my scouting trip and hunt were back on. I wanted to scout before the archery season. Mostly so I could see all the bucks everyone talks about and I didn't want to fowl up the archery hunters. As it turned out I couldn't go until mid september. Most the archery hunters were done by then and I didn't feel like I was in anybodys way. Also the information learned would be more helpful on my hunt being just a few weeks before opening day. Driving in I expected to see deer around every corner. We came in seep ridge and made it to the divide without seeing a deer. It didn't take long to realize that this was going to be a hunt not a carp shoot. We pulled over at 5pm and started glassing. It didn't take long to find deer and it seemed every time we pulled over we could find a few. This is one of the bucks we saw that first night. My photo page isn't working, I am going to post this and try again.

Stopped & seen your Buck.
Remember when I said the Stroker would look good with some blood on it?
Nice Buck.

OK, pictures are working. We set up camp in the dark and could hear elk bugling in the distance. The next morning I sent my buddy out one ridge and I took another. He saw 8 bucks and I saw 7. Several of the bucks were shooters in my opinion but I don't get to spend much time sizing up mule deer back home so I hoped to look over a lot of deer to know what I could expect. Here are a few of the bucks we sawhttp://www.monstermuleys.info/photos/user_photos/7663img_1590.jpg

Yeah, I remember. My wife and I met alot of great people on our trip. No bad experiences at all. As it turned out we hauled the deer back on the quad and put it in the ice chest on the back of the trailer. Never did get blood on the new truck!

My neighbor went down there on the archery hunt and was shooting at a monster when a 175 inch deer ran in front of the big one and hit it right in the butt... Long story short he chased it into a deep canyon shot it one more time and came home with a 175 inch buck in the back..

Alright TB23?
Were you hunting the muzz roadless for Elk?

We spent the next day in the roadless area. We saw plenty of bull elk but few deer and no bucks. We had a lightning show the night before so they might have been lying low. I don't think they care for all the bugling either so we hiked out of there.
This picture isn't great but you get the idea.

We spent the next couple days covering ground and never found the number of bucks we had hoped to. We did see a buck everyday that I would shoot opening day. I think our slowest day we only saw 7 bucks. We got video of a couple of dandy's, one was the buck killed by brownboy. The best advise from the MM crowd was about fuel and tires. Flying out and renting a car limited the amount gear we could take. But I made room for a patch kit and a air compressor. Both came in handy on the way out.

After work on the Friday before the hunt my wife and I headed for Utah. We drove for 7 hours that night. We woke up at 5 on Saturday and continued on. We hit the gravel around 3pm. We took it easy towing the trailer and it took us 4 hours to reach camp. That is one long dirt road. My wife started with the "are we there yets" much to early. The next morning I hiked out behind camp and found a nice bull with cows and 31 does, not one buck. I condemded it as a doe hole and never went back in there. I later heard there were some good bucks back there but I never went back. The next day we drove to some new country and found some interesting deer. One buck was only a 20" wide 3 point but his rear tines folded forward and cork screwed back up. I thought if I could find him on the hunt he might make a interesting trophy but I hoped to find something bigger. The day before the season I hiked one ridge and sent my wife out the opposite way. I saw only small bucks but my wife had a report of a monster. I spent that evening glassing that canyon and found im right at dark. Opening morning I walked out that ridge and jumped that buck. He ran out the ridge and went down through some cliffs. I pursued him but only found his smaller buddies. Certain I would never see him again I moved to the ridge I had found the bucks on during my scouting trip. Again I jumped good deer I felt like I was blowing out every deer off the mountain. I spent the next day and a half hunting that ridge and never could get close to the right deer. Meanwhile everytime my wife walked from the truck she had a big deer in range. She watched two shooters fight at 60 yards. Too bad she didn't have a tag as well. After only two days I was already having my doubts. Thoughts of what size of deer I was going to settle for were already creeping into the back of my mind.

Day 3 I decided to go back were I hunted opening morning hoping the big buck returned. It didn't take long to find him. He was one ridge over and headed to the cliffs with two of his buddies. I followed them down through the rocks. Looking over a large rock I spotted one of the bucks 80 yards below. This was my view. Again internet trouble, be right back

Sounds pretty good so far.

The pictures don't do it justice. I moved to my right and found the big buck. As fast as I found him I put the crosshairs on his shoulder and squeezed the trigger. The buck ran to my right and immediately I knew I shot over him. I didn't compensate for the steep angle. Just before the deer went behind a large rock he stopped and struggled to stand. Fear turned to joy as I watched my deer fall. Fear quickly returned when I heard my deer tumbling down the cliffs!

I worked my way down through the boulders to where I last saw him. Luckily he only tumbled about 40 yards and got hung up on a rock. I will never forget when I first spotted him down. I was relieved he didn't break anything.

Lucky for me I had my wife to help pack. I pulled the trigger at 7:30 and didn't finish my last trip till 12:30. It wasn't that far up but it sure was steep.

Again I would like to thank all the MM'ers that made this hunt so successful. Everyday was a new adventure. The Book Cliffs is a very special place, one I will never forget. I know bigger bucks are killed down there but this is the buck of my dreams. Hopefully I will get to return some day. Thanks, Desperatehills

Beautiful buck. Love the mass and character on that rack. That bad boy was living in some mean looking country. No doubt well worth the pack out.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-11-11 AT 04:02PM (MST)[p]Desperate, that rock pile looks familiar, what (general) area were you hunting in? Don't need specifics. I have a rifle tag and will be hunting where we always do. If we see a couple bucks close to as good as the one you shot we'll probably get too excited and miss.NICE BUCK

No I wasn't down there muzzy elk but it could have been some of my buddies down there. I know a guy with the muzzy tag that shot a 372 down there though.

I was thinking the same thing. Seeing all the bucks and great stories inspired me to post my story. I am a one finger typer and it took me 4 hours to tell the story so I am glad everyone enjoyed it. My wife had her own camera and I have seen the pictures but I haven't put them on my computer yet. I will post the better pic's soon
