Hello all,
I purchased a Colorado Unit 76 3rd season mule deer voucher for my father. The hunt runs from Nov 5-13th. Due to health reasons, my father had decided that this will be his last hunt. For this reason, I purchased him a 3rd season tag, as he always talks about his love for hunting bucks in the rut. This was the best tag I could find/afford.
Unfortunately, I have never hunted the area, and as I am stationed overseas, I have not been able to scout. I have done hours of research on-line, purchased maps, and tried to do what I can to make this a successful hunt for my father. I have been able to find quite a bit of information on hunting good elk in 76, but not alot on hunting muleys there. It seems to be a very popular elk unit. I have to assume there must be a few good bucks in there as well.
The great news is that I have been able to arrange a leave, so that I can join my dad on the hunt. I cannot wait to spend time with him, enjoying what we both love most, and rekindling that bond we built over the many years of hunting together.
While tagging a good animal is only a small part of what we all enjoy as hunters, I would love to see my dad connect on a good buck his last year. I have decided that I will pay to have it mounted for him if it is a wall worthy buck.
I am hoping that someone on the forum may be able to give me some advice or direction on this unit? I assume that there will be some snow, and that the bucks will be getting a little rutty. Is there a certain part of the unit that tends to hold better and more bucks this time of the year? What kind of bucks can I expect to find on this unit? Is there a fair amount of private, or is it mostly public?
Any advice or informaiton on those of you who know the unit would be appreciated. I know that asking for information about units can be a touchy subject. I do plan to hunt as hard as I can to make this a success for my dad, and am willing to put in the work. If there are any kind hunters out there willing to help me out, I would appreciate it greatly. I have hunted Utah, Wyoming, and the Gunnision Basin, and would be happy to share helpful information in exchange.
I am excited for the hunt, and will make it a great lasting memory. wish me luck.

Thanks
