I just back from the opening rifle hunt in the Book Cliffs and I'm not seeing crap. Is anyone hunting/hunted opening weekend and is seeing deer? Everyone I talked to up there is saying they aren't seeing them either. I hunted on top at the Book Cliffs Divide (8000 ft) and saw 4 does so I moved down on McCook Ridge (7200 ft) and saw 1 small 4 point a 2 point and about 4 does and thats it for 3 days of hard hunting. Are they down lower then that? Maybe buck canyon or something like that? I'm heading back up there on thursday and would love to talk to someone who has got a buck or is at least seeing them. Thanks for the help.

When we hunted it the first year they opened it, the majority of the deer started moving off the tops around the end of the muzzleloader hunt.

If I had that tag I would focus on mid to lower country.

Get lower! Indian ridge and north. No reason going any farther south.

Go over by Rathole. I heard there are some nice ones over there and folks are seeing a lot of deer in that direction. Go out South of Vernal- past Bonanza.

Just got back and I think the buck transition is later this year. Saw some bachelor groups and some singles up high still, but not many (shot an OK buck off of the top as I was limited in time). Down low I saw mostly does with a few small bucks...by Thursday the bucks should be down especially if the weather comes in tomorrow.

Best of luck.

I was there 3 years ago and the weather was pretty much the exact same as it is now and we saw deer from the low end of McCook were the turn off is as far down as Indian Ridge. I ended up shooting my buck down by Bittercreek. We got off the main roads and we saw bucks all over down in those draws. Good luck.

My father-in-law drew that tag three years ago. We went out three days before the hunt started to scout the area over and was not seeing anything on top. Stopped a CO and he told us to get 10-15 miles off the top headed north and we would start running in to them. Sure enough about the 12 mile mark we started see deer everywhere. If you are not seeing many on top you need to move lower.
