MULEY BOYCOTT !!!!

Lets start this arguement! Mule deer numbers are down because of lions, coyotes, poaching, roadkill, young bucks killed by roadhunters, and mis-management by game and fish and their unwillingness to listen to our complaints.

A solution lets boycott the 2012 mule deer season! Together we can make a stand!

Or we can start killing more coyotes, writing letters to the fish cops, and only harvest mature deer.

I understand the posting on this forum promotes ideas on how to manage our game but we need to be more proactive and do our parts. Ask your big ranch neighbors for permission to kill coyotes on there ranches or maybe take a cat. The answer may be no but hey your educating them in the process!

Good Idea.

Especially boycott the Henry mountain and Arizona Strip hunts.

I'll let you know how horrible the hunts were come next winter.

:)

Hi hunter Harry, I can assure you I will boycott those hunts! (live in NM and kill nice ones close to home, when and if I draw, no need to travel!)

Will you post some pics of all the coyotes you shoot when you are out there? Or any coyotes you shoot at all? I'll be looking in the coyote forum for them and your posts. Or are only into killing what you eat?

LAST EDITED ON Nov-18-11 AT 04:27PM (MST)[p]Just do a quick search of his name and you'll see HH and son have killed plenty of yotes and has posted some great pics!

I'm thinking "Good Luck with That". Way too many people here think only of their own wants and needs and if you or others as a group decide not to hunt, they'll feel it's going to be that much better hunting for themselves!

H.Harry was not the guy to rant at about not killing Yotes, that one is on you!

Yes sir, here in No Kalifornicated, we start whackin Mexican Drug Cartel dope growers in early summer. Around the first of July we start pounding every fawn eating bruin. When fall starts we waylay any and all kitties and once the first snows hit the ground the yotes are toast. If I can only figure out how to stop the deer/vehicle collisions we might get somewhere. Hmmm, maybe we should implement a 3 point are better regulation.

Okay, in all seriousness there are no easy answers. I do like the idea of a bounty on dope growers.

We've killed a few during our local deer season, but they're nearly bald then.

I'll get serious about them after my Oregon deer hunt next week.

:)

Boycot? Why? Even tho i get tags somewhere every year, the last buck I killed was in 2006..Dont mean I aint gonna try again next year.

It really is amazing that any deer survived at all back in the day before colonization according to some. I mean there were wolves, lions, coyotes, bears........heck maybe even sabre toothed cats way back. Nobody was around to manage them. I don't think the Natives had a conservation plan for the deer and elk herds, and yet the herds thrived. Don't think they killed many predators either at least not to our standards.
The real problem with shrinking herds is habitat loss, and it comes in both ways. Fires used to burn the oak, pinyon and cedar and burn the sage. These burnt areas would then rejuvenate into deer and elk sustaining wintering grounds. Whens the last time you saw burns to help all the bad habitat everywhere? A fire strikes now and we freak out. Why, because of the urban sprawl that is now in the wintering grounds. Can't lose property. I don't care what area it is, dig up records and photos from even twenty years back compared to today, scenery is quite different don't ya think? Oh yeah, we choked out the logging industry to. So lets not burn it, or log it. Let it all get old and die and provide absolutely no forage for the deer or elk. Just trip hazards and termite feed. Put in some more rural housing, add some range maggots to the left over sage flats, toss in a little CWD, liver disease, parasites, and there you have it. Predators do hurt what is left, but the herd is hurting from more outstanding reasons than a few mangy coyotes and cats.

Darktimber said, "...Predators do hurt what is left, but the herd is hurting from more outstanding reasons than a few mangy coyotes and cats."

So, What would you have us do that is realistic? The people are not going to slow down, move off the foothills, or get the Government to change their Timber harvest plan anytime soon yet hunters want to see and hunt Deer every year.

My thoughts were/are, IF, you decided that something needs to be done about reduced deer herds, reducing predators is the one way that is realistic, cost effective, and would make a impact.

I agree with you 100%. Predator control is something that has to be dealt with. Why they are impacting the herds like they are is because the herds are not what they used to be. I hunt coyote through the winter. I'm not the best at it, but I kill a few. Does it help. You bet. But the herds will continue to decline until the other issues are dealt with you can be sure of that.

There was heavy govt predator control in the "Golden Heydays" of trophy mule deer hunting being the late 60's & early 70's with trapping, aerial gunning and poisoning.

Coincidence?

Mule deer have never had it as tough as they do today with habitat loss, modern technology & weaponry and atv access.

Every little bit helps.

Another Holier than Thou preaching about what size animals people should shoot......It aint gonna happen.

When Muleylisperer called HH out I knew we were going to see some dead dogs. Welcome the MM Muleywhisperer:)

Well muleylisperer, this post went south for you in a hurry! Although it wasn't needed HH proved his predator control abilities. Maybe you should tell him that bobcats are the problem, but wait that's no good either 'cus he's killed piles of those also.
Post some pics of your predator control skills!

Dang HH, do you hire out? We need you to train up 500 young men to do just what your doing and turn'em loose in the western mule deer States.

Buddy, you better get an agent and put your show on the road. Cutting meat is interfering with your greatest asset.

I'll offer to be your first paying customer!

Pretty sure I'll be able to participate in your boycott after the draw results are posted next year in Idaho, Colorado and Utard.

What we are all forgetting about is traffic mortality. How many times have you driven in prime mule deer habitat and seen dead animals. Traffic accidents with deer account for over 30% of the fatalities, at least in northern Utah. Along with increased development in the wintering grounds and the dismal rates of winter survival as well as predators, how do we as hunters deal with these situations? These are the real questions we need to be asking.

I do thank you for putting me in my spot Harry hunter! That is some fine predator control!

I used to trap here in Central NM in the 80's and early 90's and averaged around 120 coyotes and 30 bobcats per year. I have not had a chance to trap much since with school and work but we do call on weekends.I just found out that the 24th is the last day our company will exist so looks like some time off so maybe time to dust off the traps.
