Last night at the Central RAC the big game biologist gave a FYI to the RAC and the others there. He basically said that there are reports along with photos of tracks of 7 wolves near 1st and 2nd waters which is west of Strawberry Res. They have put out trail cams in the area to hopefully get some pics.
Evidently, folks in a vehicle driving somewhere in that area (can't remember the name of the road he gave) saw and counted 7 wolves traveling down the road. Didn't have a camera so they went home grabbed a camera , couldn't find the wolves so they took pictures of the tracks in the snow. This isn't the first reported sighting of wolves near Strawberry. It may be the first report of a pack of wolves though.
I guess it was inevitable that we would be dealing with wolves in the state.
If anyone out their has any other info please let the DWR know.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-14-11 AT 09:28AM (MST)[p]Where there are elk, there will be wolves. They travel like son of a guns and there is no doubt that in the next 20 years there will be a solid population in UT, OR, WA, NV, Central Cal, Northern NM and AZ, CO, and the Great Plains.

Good luck

Did you say contact the fish and game or shoot on sight?
If they are in Utah they are just overgrown coyotes....

Shoot em till their dead

Well as long as the fish and game are denying that they are present, any doglike animal you see is a coyote, shoot them 'yotes!

While archery elk hunting this fall with my son in "the waters" we saw "utah dog" tracks and a friend heard two pairs howl from two different ridges. Dang coyotes are getting deep voices!
DWR was contacted and they are aware of them.
Also noted was the fact that we saw a lot less cow elk in the waters than were typical in previous years.
Go figure?

What was this original post about? I forgot after seeing REDDOG'S signature.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-14-11 AT 01:21PM (MST)[p]I wish I coluld slow that signature down, LOL!!!

Edit: Geez, I got so shook up I see I butchered "could", hehe!

DWR has no jurisdiction over the wolves. The Feds make the rules in regards to what is or isn't done with them. The Wasatch may be in trouble very soon in regards to elk numbers. May take 5 years or so but it is certainly not a good scenario. If the wolves truly are getting established Wasatch elk hunters can expect decreases in tag numbers. The wolves will certainly take a piece of the pie.

well all you locals you just got all the info you need get out and do what is right and get rid of those wild dogs before its too late!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. SSS Its up to you guys, you guys all say you would shoot on site. so if you can talk the talk you better walk the walk

I spent 90% of my time in the waters this year on my LE archery tag. Lots of elk and didnt ever see or hear anything that could of been a wolf but by hell i wish i would of. I was packin all the extra weight with my side arm and never got to use it. Im sure they are in there though.

So?

A couple years ago when Me & Lil Beav seen a Wolf Near Strawberry we had people doubting us?

A couple years later & evervbody becomes Believers,WTF?

Hot Dog,Hot Damn,I love this Ameri-can

for the last 3 yrs we have heard them up in the uintas. we saw 2 2 yrs ago running acrossed dry ridge up rock creek and heard from a indian guy here no names some were shot on res dirt. close to blind stream. so here we go...

LAST EDITED ON Dec-15-11 AT 05:23PM (MST)[p]Look at the bright side Show 'em, in a few years you won't have to worry about all those cow tags DWR sells now.

Thanks Utah, for raising all that wolf food!

me and wife were up there on the late cow hunt...usually cake walk hunt... saw 4 big bulls on teet...thats it never anything else .. then we heard a strange "bark"... then again another and another... never heard a sound like this before was not a cow elk or a yote or someones cat dog... took a look in that direction .5 mile farther down a draw we found 5 sets of different tracks each bout 15 yards apart all heading in the same direction.... these tracks were the size of the palm of my hand... we heard the "barks" a few more times further down the dram i say mile or so... we tried to catch up never did... never saw them.... we have elk hunted this area for 7 yrs..spike bull .. first 5 we found elk every day always in more then one area.. 5th and 6th water, white river, boiler canyon and on teet and on first and second water the last 2 yrs we could not find a damn thing no matter where we went or how high or deep we went.. this yr on spike and cow hunt... never heard a gunshot... saw 3 elk that were hell bent for leather to get somewhere.. we were alone in that drainage so no one else kicked them out and it wasnt us..... put 2 and 2 together... common sense... utahs elk hunting is destroyed....

In another threads, some mentioned the elk were to blame for the demise of the mule deer herd. So if the wolves eat all of the elk, does that mean the mule deer herd will recover?

I will do my part to make sure that these animals don't spread across the state!

booner -

Deer are on the lunch menu for wolves. They are opportunists and will take deer as readily as elk, as well as moose.

serious as it gets.... well i guess i get the family into waterfowl.... wolves dont eat much them in it be a few yrs before DWR makes a mess out of that... D.W.R. is like and ex wife.... finds a way to ruin anything i enjoy and say it is for the better of everyone....

So is this the excuse for the debocale that was the antlerless recommendation??

Now its not the DNR's fault that there aren't any elk, it's infact the 7 wolves that were magically recognized by the DNR without even having any picture evidence????

WOW!!!

Not doubting anyone but with the frequency of sightings I'm reading about how come I have yet to see a picture? Just about everyone has some sort of camera with them nowadays and yet I haven't even seen a blurry cell phone snapshot...

Its lonely at the top....

the answer is shes wearing 20 shirts and 3 pairs of jeans... oh right... get those dang wolves... I live in the are havent really heard much about wolves, heard of them in coalville and morgan but the country up here gets pretty deep and narly (talking about the wolves still)im sure wolves if they arent in there now its only a matter of time, cash in your built up preference points cause the big bad wolves knockin on our door.

Do you think SFW is doing hand-to-hand combat with the wolves?

Silly boy, it's hand-to-hand combat (with lots of money) with the Feds, Antis and the uninformed!!!! That's what it takes to get results in today's world.

Wait til the anti's and Obama get there way and we will have the cute little doggies in Southern Utah as well. They are now trying to "re-introduce" them into the whole southwest. Won't that be special?
If you have not signed the petition generated by Big Game Forever, then you are telling the Feds we don't care.
Maybe duck hunting will be all that is left?

LAST EDITED ON Dec-20-11 AT 10:24PM (MST)[p]trying to upload Pics I might figure it out once again

wow.... its too bad, personal opinion i think it would be neat to see them in the wild if they didnt have such a devistating effect on everything else, looks like there will be a lot of "coyote" hunting goin on up in strawberry.
