Region G Foot Soldier??

Do I need horses to hunt Region G? Do I have to backpack in? Just wondering if a guy that is willing to put in time scouting, hunting, and hiking can have decent success by foot and from a trailer? Also, I know I would need a resident with me to hunt wilderness; are there decent areas to hunt that are not wilderness?

I probably won't even hunt there this coming year, I'm planning for the future right now. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Layemdown

Tons of people hike in and hunt it and lots of horseback guys hunt it also,They normally go back in farther. BUT it don't matter if you go in a mile or 10 miles, you still have find a buck that you like.

You can hunt it by foot, but you will have to hike a lot further every day if you are planning on returning to your trailer. In my mind that would be a ton of wasted time in and out. I would back pack a camp back in like most hunters will do in that unit.

If I were you I would plan on hunting somewhere else Like colorado. The deer herds in westerm wyoming are in the worst shape they have ever been. I just dont see a point in working your but off hunting that country for a 22 to 24 inch wide 4 point because thats about all thats left up there. You will see more people hunting than you thought could be possible. It will ruin your entire hunting experience trust me. If it was me I would hunt somewhere else with lower hunter numbers and a good chance at the 120-160 type bucks that are now for the most part the only ones left in G.

Sadly, SSakitas is right.

Also, there is no designated wilderness in Region G, only H. If you could find a resident to go that would be a better option, probably cut hunting pressure by 25% in wilderness areas but you won't be alone.

Hunting from a trailer would be a horrible way to hunt G unless you like climbing 1000-3000 feet per day.

Why do people become obsessed with hunting that country? SSakitas is right, I live a short ways from that country and no way would I subject myself to that mess, its fun to go hiking there in the summer, but I would hate to drive a couple hundred miles and go fight the crowds, if you think your tougher than the hoards then I would suggest somewhere else because those mountains aren't big enough to get away by out hiking other hunters.

It is a minimum 1 hour hike to good deer country, and in most places closer to two hours. That is two hours in in the dark, and two hours out to the truck after dark if you are hunting properly. While I have done it, it is country that is far more conducive to backpacking and horseback hunting. Kind of tough to hunt hard all day when you are putting in that many hard trail hours in the dark. By the third or fourth day, you will be down on your knees for sure.

If your starting at the bottom along the river your going to get wooped, if you have a atv to increase your elevation, that would help alot.

It doesnt matter how you hunt that area you are going to be disappointed. Tons of people and very few bucks. I think someone in the WG&F Department needs to be held accountable for what has happened to this area.

I would agree that this area has gone downhill and has suffered some nasty winters with high mortality rates however I don't agree with everything that has been said. Come hunt Northern Utah on the general rifle and let me know which hunt U would rather spend your time on! If you have been on both hunts then you know what I'm talking about

Sit tall in the saddle, hold your head up high, keep your eyes fixed to where the trail meets the sky...

I'll echo most of whats been said already. Deer are in sad shape all across western Wyoming.

I think a guy can hunt it from a trailer though, especially during the archery hunt, and lower G is very trailer friendly on the later dates. I think a lot of good country gets passed up right off the road. Just be creative.

You will see all types of hunters in G units.

Horse, llama, goat, backpackers, motorbikes, quad queers going anywhere they want, foot soldiers from roadside camps.

Plenty of deer hanging in roadside camps as ya see coming off the mountain on a horses saddle, or backpack or on a quad.

Flip a coin and go for it.
