Zion Unit?

So, last year (2010) my brother had an Alton CWMU permit. Spent a week down there but, didn't venture over on the west side of hwy 89. I was looking at land status maps, there does seem to be some public land on the west side of hwy 89, south of Long Valley junct. down to Orderville. I'm trying to decide if this would be worth it to put in for on the Zion unit and hunt this general area. I'm guessing the deer are already migrated south by the time the rifle hunt starts. So, I was thinking bow or smokepole. I'd appreciate any advise.

Thanks,

Smokepole

LAST EDITED ON Dec-30-11 AT 07:01PM (MST)[p]Good area with a decent amount of deer. A couple big bucks running around in there too. But it is pretty popular and gets a lot of hunting pressure. Road hunters and several tree stand hunters. Not bad if you don't mind people.

Oakbrush knows that area very well. : )
I agree with him, there are some good bucks in that unit, but it gets pressured. Some scouting and work and you can get into some deer.

Good evening.

I hunted that area last year and was very disappointed with the number of other hunters and the low number of deer. I am going to try a new unit this year.

thats where i shot my archery buck this year that scored 203. and i had many other bucks on camera. also got a few of my friends bucks there in the muzzleload hunt. you have to scout. but ill never hunt anywhere else.

I've seen some good bucks on the Zion and last year I saw more fawns than I have the last 5 years looks like it may be promising in the future for sure.

Sorry to disagree Bryce, but with the 30 units there may be more applicants, but there won't be additional hunters just because someone said that the Zion Unit is a great place to go. I've got a couple bonus points maybe I'll try it again.

Thank you for correcting me Trix you are right. What I should have said was that by talking up the Zion unit there is a chance that more city boys will apply for the limited number of tags that are available, thus decreasing the chance of me drawing a tag for my favorite area...

What does it matter your headed to a new spot remember!

That area is way, way overrated. I spent at least 3 weeks in that area last year .
It was a good day if we saw a doe. Did however meet a lot of people. Would not recommend it.
