Preliminary Dedicated hunter selections

I fixed the link should work better now. Only 3600 dedicated hunters enrolled now. I thought there would be closer to 6000.

bragabit,

Is the Utah DWR limiting the number of dedicated hunters allowed per unit? I couldn't find if they designated a percentage of tags per unit for dedicated hunters.

This whole thing is confusing to me. I have also read where 15% of tags go to DHs after the lifetime licenses are pulled out. I am not sure if that counts guys already enrolled for this year? If it is 15% new DH every year or what? I really wish they would have just gone to a 1 year program, and you applied for it just like a regular hunt.

I called and spoke with the SLC office a few weeks back. The way it was explained to me was...the 15% is only for the re-ups or new people that are starting the DH program. The people already in their 2nd or 3rd year do not make up that 15%

BH

That is good to know BH, thanks for the clarification. So what will happen next year? 15% on top of the 15% this year. Will there be 45% of the tags going to DHers in 3 years. They can't carry over 15% from years one and two and give 15% more in year three without cutting somewhere else.

As explained to me by a very helpful DWR employee:

Take the total number of tags in a given unit...call it 100. Lifetime license holders get first priority for those tags. Lets say they take 20, leaving 80 for everyone else. 15% of those 80 tags are assigned to Dedicated hunters (in this case 12 tags). Anybody who is already part of the DH program is first in line for those 12 tags. So maybe they take 6 tags in this example. Now we have the DH drawing for new applicants - separate and distinct from the other 3 drawings (LE, general, O.I.L.). You apply for the DH program and can make up to 5 choices for your hunt area. You will most likely draw to become a DH and then they will look at your hunt choices to see if any spots are open in your 1st choice, 2nd choice, etc. Whichever area you draw will be your area for all 3 years of your enrollment.

If you don't draw for the DH program you would then be included in the general draw, assuming you applied for a tag in that drawing.

Anyone remember when we hit the DH cap of 10,000 hunters just a few years ago for the first time ever? (or was it 8000?, I forget). Either way, the loop hole closures by increasing hours to 40, etc. really drove down the number of DH's. Surely the ambiguity of what was to come caused some drop out as well.

I love the program for the opportunity it provides, even though I have taken very few bucks in ~12 years in the program.

The numbers are interesting for sure in terms of distribution across the new units. Will be intersting to see if some of the distribution translates to applications on General Season tags.
