Books vs San Juan Muzzy

Should be in the running with points to draw either permit. San Juan may take a couple more years. I want a 175"+ buck. I know what it takes to achieve this, so please don't lecture me on scouting and such. I would just like some opinions on where you experts think I may have a better chance with the smoke pole. I am aware of the quality and quantity of bucks on each unit. My main concern is the hunting conditions during the muzzy hunt. I have been on the Books during this time, but not the San Juan. Any info would be appreciated. PM's are welcome if you prefer.. Thanks..

LAST EDITED ON Feb-07-12 AT 02:26PM (MST)[p]Hey OD - I was going to say - you should know what the Books are like during that time of year! San Juan is going to be similar I would expect. I would say this though and maybe it will help you out: "Dance with the one that brung you!." So, if you know an area, your chances of getting a bigger deer are that much greater the more you know the area.

Hey Roy.. I am with you on that and I am really leaning towards the Books. I am just confused a little. I spent a week on the Books last fall during the archery hunt. In a week I only seen 2 bucks I would have wanted to tag with the muzzy. Granted, the hunter I was helping was happy with any 4 point, so we didn't venture a long ways from the roads. Didn't need to to find what he wanted. However, in a week, I thought we would see a handful more bucks in that trophy range I am looking for. I did see some really nice bucks taken out of the Books during the muzzy hunt though. I also seen some really nice bucks come off the San Juan in the last couple years. Easy decisions when there wasn't a huge chance of drawing, but now that its here, I just want to make the most out of my points.

LOL
On the SJ you could go the whole week and not see a buck to tag, then the next week see 5 of them.
Roy said it best Stick with the one you know best, it will give you the best chance.

Except the biggest buck I ever shot was from an area I had never been to! LOL - Got lucky on the way up the mountain on a mid-season "scouting" trip. But yeah, if you know the Book Cliffs, I say hunt there. If you only saw a few deer then, it could have just been a bad day, and like you said, you didn't get far from the truck. The higher you go, the more bucks you will see, and the quality should get better as a general rule.
