Colorado Unit 21

I'm planning on hunting unit 21 (bow)for Mule deer and I have enough pts for it this year. I've never stepped foot on the unit but have looked it over on google earth and other sites. I might have the opportunity to make it up there during the summer to scout. The unit looks over run with roads etc...Is there a place anyone might recommend to be able to get away from the roads (road hunters)? I pack in and out with llamas and most likely will be doing it on my own, it also looks pretty dry and that concerns me too. Any thoughts?? Thanks!

I am not sure you need a llama to hunt 21. 95 percent of unit is road accessible. Bow season will find most deer at the highest elevations. check areas around baxter pass and douglas pass and then work down drainages from there. Upper elevations have water tanks and springs. Some private to contend with also. Ifyou are looking for a high country pack in type of hunt you might look elsewhere.

If you are interested in the quality of bucks in Colo-21.....

Look at the cover of this months Huntin' Fool.

He knows the archery regions of that unit. Those deer are very migratory and hang in the higher ground during archery season. Since there are lots of oil rigs in that area there are roads in most of it. I rifle hunted it this past year and killed a dandy buck, but I didn't see a ton of big deer, even during the rut. We hunted for 6 days and I only saw a handful of 180 or better bucks. So if you think you are going to get into lots of big bucks by hiking in (ala David Long) you should look elsewhere. JMO

Get ready for crowds! Unlike most other units, the best hunting areas (higher elevations) have roads running right through them. It's a circus like nothing I've seen before.

You might be over PP'd but look at 66 archery. Seems more of what you're looking for. And the herd is recovering. Maybe not what it was 5 years ago but on the way back.
