Idaho help

I live here in western MT and me and a few hunting buddies want to do a trip to Idaho next year to chase muleys. I really have no idea where to start. units 12, 10 and 17 are by far the closest for me, but i wouldnt mind traveling a bit further to get into better hunting. Ive heard good things about the area around Orofino as well. also curious if any of the unlimited permit areas are any good. I like to hunt open areas, specifically burns if i could find some. Any help would be really really appreciated and if any Idaho boys want to help i'd be more than willing to point them in a good direction in MT

LAST EDITED ON Jan-23-07 AT 06:27PM (MST)[p]If you like hunting open areas I would not recomend 10, 12 or 10A which is a lot of what is around Orofino. Brushy, thick, and overgrown are the best ways I would describe it. Along some of the river breaks in those units it may be more open, but will probably have the most pressure due to roads which are along most of the major water systems in the area. I would look at considering stuff in the Elk City Zone, some of unit 15 is open and has had some more recent fire activity. The other thing to consider is a general lack of mule deer in big parts of some of those units.

Send me a PM if you are interested in hunting SW Idaho at all. If you are interested in open country for muleys specifically, the Southern part of the state is a much better bet than most of the other areas mentioned so far IMO.

Spent 5 years up in N. Idaho specifically in the areas you mentioned and I would not consider that area "prime" muley country. Lots of good whitetails there, and certainly a few mule deer but with the time and expense in an out of state hunt you could find a better place.

11a in north Idaho has some great mule deer hunting. It's a controlled hunt and i believe the odds of draw are pretty tough. Whitetail hunting up north is off the hook as mentioned. Some of the better controlled muley units in the state are, 40,41,45,44. All are a tough draw. You and your buddies could do a general hunt in areas like 39,43,48. hunting ain't too bad in those areas. you guys would most like;y get into some critters. The better deer defineatly require some time and effort, however..........
