Your going to be somewhat limited by time and resources, but even the accumulation of little things can make a difference. Talk to a wild life biologist that specifically knows mule deer. Find someone who did their master's thesis related to the deer. They might have some good ideas as they will have a good balance of both book learning and real field observation gathering data.

You might be able to do a bit of habitat enhancement. It won't be big, but every little bit might make the difference between one more doe/fawn/buck making it another year. A public awareness campaign might be an idea as well. Educate the public to the benefits of safe driving, the areas of higher risk and at what times of year they may need to be more vigilant. See if you can get a legislator or two to sponsor a bill to put up some fencing and cross overs in an area with high winter road mortality. Try to get some support from the insurance companies as they stand to save a fortune. They might even be willing to foot the bill for a couple of billboard to encourage more care on the road relative to deer and safety.

If you get something viable you may find some financial help from members of this board and no doubt a number willing to donate labor.

Just some ideas...

It's been a long hard ride
Got a ways to go
But this is still the place
That we all call home

In my neighborhood they have STOP signs with flashing LEDs (lights) that are powered by solar charged batteries. You may be able to work with UDOT and the DWR to identify locations where similar DEER CROSSING sign could be put up. You could coordinate the efforts in raising funds for the signs, installing the signs, and then planning a community awareness program. Invite guest speakers from the DWR (Biologist) , and UDOT to talk about why the signs were needed and how the community can help out.

Bush Jr. ....just because you killed a nice buck last year doesn't mean your 18 year old ass is golden. Do us all a favor and try to grow up just a little.

Sit tall in the saddle, hold your head up high, keep your eyes fixed to where the trail meets the sky...

Wow.....he is trying to figure out an eagle project ..and you talk to him like that!(liecabucks) you must be very immature.

I thought it was an eagle project. it finally dawned on me that he was talking about scouting. Not much you can do about eagles........

My exact thoughts too ICM. An eagle "thinning" project. Don't think UDWR or USF&W would have thought too highly of that.

Elk Horn, its not his Eagle project (good on him for that) i'm talking about his(too cool) responses he often makes, its a little annoying at times.

Helping out the deer herd may be a tough thing to do for a eagle project? Maybe you could put up no hunting signs in the fields? But I have herd of some eagle's that got a bunch of scout together and built duck nesting boxs and that kind of thing. Contact Lynn Chamberlin in Hurricane. I am sure he can help you figure something out that would help the wildlife in our area.

There is a very short section of HYW by my place that killed 7 deer just this week. This spot takes a big chunk out of the herd every year. Some more signage there would be very doable as an Eagle project.

I'll provide a meeting place for volunteers and storage for tools and materials, and a box skip tractor for your use.

There is privet land just out side the HWY easement that could likely be used with out going through all the government regs.

All donations to The Boy Scouts are tax deductible. Here are some big companys that operate in the area and might be willing to help with funding.

There will always be plenty of naysayers, don't even respond to them and just look towards the positive.

PM me if interested.

If I caught one of my scouts calling people "Smart Asses" on an online forum I would probably reject his application for Eagle. This is a pretty important award you are striving for, maybe you should start acting like you are worthy of it.

If there is a BLM, or maybe US Forest Service biologist in your area, you might want to talk to them, they might have some ideas. Also, your State Agency wildlife or big game biologist might be of help. Another approach might be to talk to your local chapter of the Mule Deer Foundation to see if they have any projects on their planning board that might be facilitated as a Scout Eagle Project. Good luck to you, young man!

I agree with a lot of post on this subject. If one of my scouts got on a forum and called somebody a "SMARTASS", i would let him hear about it. Just remember the scout law and oath and how that goes.

NOW, I am glad to hear that you want to do a project for deer. Keep us posted or updated if there are things that we can do to help. It sounds like there are a few good ideas or leads.

Good Luck!!

I give him a nod for calling a smart ass a smart ass. HJB sounds a little heavy handed in the control department.

Good luck Bushy. Talk to the Parks service about painting some tables or benches at the local camp grounds. Get with the F&G about clear some Pinion and Junipers for a habitate project.

Me too... Usually when someone calls me a smartass I deserve it..

I can put you in touch with a US Fish and Wildlife biologist in the Southern end of the state if you want. He might have something going you could turn into a project.

BuckSnort. i was a little fired up at not getting taken seriously and i know you were just pokin fun. i meant no disrespect. and Shummy that would be great PM sent.

You could start a trail camera recycling program, I hear there are plenty of them littering southern utah...

Looks like you got some good pointers, Ilike the concept of the Solar powered light up warning signs.

Good on you wor working towards your eagle.
