Drew a new area for deer this year thanks to our new draw system and wanted to get a couple of thoughts on areas/ roads I was looking into checking out. Thinking we are going to hunt south of Monte Cristo road. I understand deseret CWMU is down there and have thought about checking out down by there property line but have heard I will not be received to kindly by there security patrols. Is there other private property that I am missing that is in the general area that will be in the way of hunting the area. How crowded/ difficult is it to find a camping spot during the archery hunt? Thinking about checking out Dairy Ridge Rd, Wasatch Ridge Rd, and wheeler creek Rd. any other roads/ areas I should look into scouting. Anybody have an opinion as to if it would be worth purchasing an archery elk tag if I'm going to be in that area.
Appreciate any help

Green is public, the rest is private (Mostly CWMU's)

I don't think Deseret takes to trespassers very well but I grew up hunting there (along with every other guy and his dog) and i never have had a run in with the supposed Deseret Cronies.

You don't have alot of choices in this unit because I'd say a little over 90% is private, if not more.

Hey Travis, where'd you get that property ownership layer for Google Earth? I'm jealous.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-05-12 AT 10:18AM (MST)[p]I archery hunted that area last year not very many hunters but alot of people just out playing with their wheelers on the weekends. Quite a few deer and no elk, and alot of moose. Good area around dairy ridge rd.

xbow, I know that area well, but then again so do alot of people, I mean alot! If I were you, I would hunt the north side of the highway. Definately get you an elk tag too. While, the map may show more roads, there are still alot of quite out of the way places. It's rare to see anyone off their ATVs. I think the deer hunting is better on the north and I know the elk is better too, (spike or cow only though). Spend a summer weekend up there exploring, and let me know if you have some specific questions about areas.

North and south side of the front and back of monte is mostly private and cwmu's on the back side both sides of the road. Curtis creek road is a zoo good luck. Monte was hit hard a couple winters ago and on top of that to many people hunt up there. Tons of private your best bet would be the satch front there are some pigs from ogden - salt lake seen my 3rd biggest buck in my life on the front. 1st being in a corn field city buck.

But i did know a guy that shot a HUGE HEAVY 4x4 30 wide with the haed a size of a elk a TOAD of a buck killed down curtis creek road a few miles didnt say the exact area dont blame him. I was pretty jealous of him shot him during the muzzy hunt about 6-7 years ago.

The north side of highway 39 is the cache unit. This is a pretty sweet map. I paid arond $30 for it. Shoot me a pm for the link

Purple is CMWU (This unit is mostly CWMU's)
Yellow is BLM
White is Private

We do have to hunt south of the highway north of it is not within the hunt boundary. Appreciate the info sounds like some mixed reviews, but def going to give it a shot. The alternate is over by whitney resevior and I've never been real impressed by the deer numbers over that way. For those of you that have been up there is the private property marked pretty well especially down around the deseret CWMU (fenced or just signs?) dont want to end up somewhere I shouldn't be while scouting.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-05-12 AT 08:56PM (MST)[p]Off the monte road south side its marked on the road property goes south 1000 yards or so. Strawberry ridge is off the south and north goes south probably about 1000 yards or so. Not sure deseret fence line i would bet its marked good. I would get a good map that shows private and cwmu's. Deer numbers are in the cache and rich county but you might be able to kick up a good buck if you hunt hard. Good luck and kill any wolfs i mean yot's ;) Fish and game killed one on monte a couple years ago i know i would'nt hold back.

My mistake, I assumed all of Monte was the same unit. There will be NO mistaking Deseret, Bountiful, Marriott and some of the othere big property boundaries. If you're up for a good hike, check out upper Wheatgrass, either coming in from the bottom or on top. Either way it's about as remote as you'll find and at least that will minimize the people/pressure factor.

If you're wanting to hunt boarders, especially for deer, I wouldn't rule out the Whitney area on the north and west sides near the boarders of I belive Ensign and the different Chalk Creek properties.
