POPEYE statute of limitations

So it's been quite a few years now since Popeye's fame days. The details were pretty tightly held at the time. There are a few with the inside scoop, David Long, Eastman's and obviously the guy who took the only living summer photo of him among a few in the know.

So has it been long enough? Is the statute of limitations up ;-), have the details leaked?

So where did he call home in the summer and early fall? Anyone out there know, or is the secret still alive and well?

I can't imagine anyone in the know about summer or fall hideouts would be forth coming. If it was a good area for Popeye--and no doubt it was--then it is a good area for other long lived, monster bucks.

He was a Wyoming Buck!

Hope that helps!:D

They said he migrated 70 air miles to winter, so that put him either just south of Jackson, or on the north end orf the greys.

"anybody have a copy of that summer pic? I'd love to see it.

That's a special feeling, Lloyd"

It is in High Country Mule deer Hunting by duy eastman. If you would have taken the job at eastmans a couple years ago they would have taken you right to where he was at, but you were a slacker and wouldn't give up your cake job. You want me to send you the book?

I know precisely where buck was summer and winter . The last 5 years I've stayed in touch w/ the man (Eddie Boe) that virtually lived w/ "POPEYE" . The buck traveled approximately 25 miles to it's winter grounds . Eddie is one of the most passionate mule deer observers I ever met , and knows about other giant bucks, has other giant sheds to prove it . Eddie prevented "Popeyes" demise a couple times from poachers . In one attempt , the attempted poachers were caught by authorities .

I have two friends who finally found him in summer and during the hunting season.
Sadly enough, the greed tore that friendship apart with lies and deceit. Fortunately for Popeye, he literally "dodged a bullet" because of it.
I liked "Morty" the best. I have the Brent Todd "Wyoming Legends" print that shows Popeye, Morty and Goliath all together on the winter range, great painting!

Same here Slammy. I blame Morty for my muley addiction. I wore those R.T. Eastman vhs tapes out watching that buck. And I have the same print. Only problem was Brent screwed up when he gave Morty eye guards. He never had any.

Lol....that's right YELUM, i forgot about the eyeguard thing.
I wonder if that will make that print worth more money, kinda like a three legged buffalo nickel??

Chewy, I don't think I've ever seen one online. Eastmans were selling poster print of him years ago.

Yelum

Thanks. I looked around and couldn't find much. Not real familiar with him. Remember CHAMP? That was one heck of a buck too. Is Morty the buck pictured in back??

Yes chewy he's the back one.

Hey Slammy, don't you think its time to get it framed. I thought you said he's your favorite. lol

Yelum

YELUM, yes i need to frame them, i have all kinds of unframed art tightly wrapped in plasctic and in a safe dry place.
I love the Manzanarez brothers work as well.....their detail is unbelievable.

"I believe corral creek is the answer you are looking for. "

That surprises me a bit. While there are still some decent bucks up in that area, it gets a lot of traffic from both the east and west sides. I suppose in Popeye's day, perhaps it wasn't an area as well frequented.

mmwb,

Your right it is hard to believe Popeye lived there. Today with 3 wheeler trails and 1000 yard boomers he probably would have been shot when he was 2 1/2. Maybe we are our own worst enemy with all the technology....

It's kind of cool to know someday we may see another, I hope...

Wolfhunter-- true words. Popeye never would have been Popeye in today's competitive hunting world. A spot which once took us 3 hours to ride into now can be driven into on a Razor in 30 minutes and the deer have suffered.

I have the RT Eastman videos, "Extreme Bucks" volumes 1-5. My favorite muley videos-- no killing, no ego. Just real passion for mule deer.

Packout,

I too share the same respect & enjoyment of those video's... Wish everyone respected the gift of Western Wyoming Mule Deer like you packout!

Region D was where he called home No big secret. Now where in Region D while that is a big secret. LOL

No,no, pretty sure it was W.

Sit tall in the saddle, hold your head up high, keep your eyes fixed to where the trail meets the sky...

I'm sure it was Region B like I said.

A guy who is supposed to know the real dope on this buck said that he lived up near the top in H

I believe David killed Goliath. Really! Some guy out of Utah named David got him. There are pics in David Long's (who had hoped to be the David that did it) book of him on the winter grounds as well as after he was killed.

Yep Goliath got shot and was pretty regressed. still a great buck, but not near what he was in David Long's Videos. I never heard what happened to morty or champ.

Hey Slam does the buck in the middle look familiar? In his Split Decision, my old man chose to shoot the one on the left.

Best thread resurrection I've seen in many years.

I'm new to MM and western hunting at a late age. Although I lived in NM while in the military I did more fishing than hunting back then.

I've always loved the western hunting shows but find it amazing to hear you guys speak of it in such a different manner. Very much a love. Gives me a new respect for you life long Muley hunters.

Just like in costal fishing and moderately priced deer leases where I live we wish we knew we were in the good Ole days when we actually were there.

I've got hot take. I think Popeye is overrated. The obsession with this deer after all these years is bizarre. There have been MANY cooler deer. Yes he is big and wide and a cool deer for sure but as far as big bucks go I really don't know why he continues to carry such mystique.

Same reason one face gets promoted and a thousand others don’t. It ain’t what they got, it’s what their promoters got, and how they perform and for how long. Eventually they become a celebrity/legend. Popeye become a legend…… the ones you’re talking about didn’t…….. lousy promoters.

Serious question. Does anyone know what region in WY that Morty died or was shot in? I almost have enough points to draw region G, :ROFLMAO:
I got to share this Grosventre….

I was going to say something smart a$$ by claiming antler characteristics come from the females and was looking up terminology by looking into whether the male for female pass on the boldness characteristic.

Google must be using AI as it’s research tool now.

Reading this revived thread brought back memories of watching mule deer hunting tapes rented from Bobs Express Video in Spanish Fork as a kid, this sparked my obsession for mule deer. My older brothers would often talk about Popeye, and other legendary bucks. Another buck that was famous in Utah and avoided the grip and grin was "The Buck of Justice"

Yep another great buck

This wa also back when everyone thought a 170 buck was a big buck. You guys remember those days? Those were good days

Back when???

Hell you watch a hunting video and guys call a 155 a GIANT. A legitimate 170 would blow a lot of peoples minds this day in age.

ATVs, long-range rifles and game cameras are mentioned as the reasons why animals of this size are less common today. These advancements are not beyond our control, yet most of us appear ready to accept them and move on. I wonder how many people would decline to hunt if they could not ride all day on their ATV, and how raising the level of difficulty would increase the chances of drawing a tag for those willing to work a little harder?
