Drew an archery deer tag in unit 40. I'm pretty excited about hunting this unit. I've hunted unit 62 a few times and was wondering if terrain is pretty much the same?

Thanks Lee

The terrain is kinda sorta not really the same. The elevation, vegetation and soils of the two areas are very much alike. The topography is quite different. Unit 62 is basically one long ridge and everything slopes down to the east whereas unit 40 is a large mesa without drastic elevation changes until you reach the edges and then drainages drop off in several directions.

Now I apologize if the following is not what you want to hear but I think its important to be honest so you are mentally prepared for your hunt. Unless you have access to private land an archery tag would be my last choice of unit 40 hunts. Why? At that time of year I believe most of the deer will be at higher elevations. Now the top of the pinon mesa is gorgeous game country but its almost entirely private. There is one block of National Forest but I never see a lot of deer there and you will see a LOT of archery elk hunters there. As the mesa top descends to lower elevations there is BLM to hunt. Unfortunately there are no large blocks of BLM. The public land is dispersed among private holdings and the borders are irregular. You'll basically be using public roads to cross private land to hunt BLM holdings that vary in size up to a few thousand acres. Get a map, get a map, get a map. A gps and aerial photos wouldn't hurt either. There will be deer in that country, just not as many as later on in Oct/Nov. Best of Luck.

Thanks alot for the info uphill, yes I failed to mention I will be hunting private land the first week of season. I was told there are some really good bucks that come from private in that area but was just curious to hear from other hunters.
Thanks Lee

Conrats on the tag. A unit I continue to look at.Smaller unit with lots of private, but continue to hear good things about the unit.
