Deer Travel

In my experience, it pretty much depends where their little hide out is. I suspect you're asking about lower elevations, because there is usually a lot more water up high. I think now is a really good time to locate the very best little "bed and breakfast" areas. Deer numbers are very low, at least in my area. I've observed one particular large expansion of land for many years, from a high lookout point. The last few years, it looks completely void of deer. Last year there wasn't even a shot fired within hearing distance, on opening day. However, there is one little patch of brush/sage that "always" has a few deer hanging in it. If there is a buck anywhere around, he chooses this little spot to hang out in all summer long, and even through the fall. Some years, when there have been more deer, there will be more deer living in this spot. It isn't more than a mile from a spring, so water access is fairly easy. I have found that there are just some spots that deer like and will use every year. If a buck gets killed, another buck will take over the spot. It's very difficult to see why a particular spot is any different than all of the rest of the country. Weather it's the way the breeze comes through, or escape routes, whatever, once you find a buck bedroom, you can pretty much count on it being occupied year after year.
