grizzly, I took both of those photos at the same cemetery, but one was this year and one was last year. Most people I am sure will say its the same buck, but I have heard others say for sure its just an off spring.

So what the consensus and why do you feel the way you do?

Different deer from the same genetics maybe??? The extra junk doesn't line up exactly, and even though it doesn't grow the exact same from year to year, the extras will usually at least grow from the same antler.

I believe this to be the same deer. On the second photo there is a scar that originates at the bottom of his left eye an goes down about three quarters of an inch. All though the first photo is not as focused and the deer has a longer late season coat you can see evidence of a scar there again. The mutated beam is most likely not a genetic trait but resulted from a damaged pedicel from when he shed. When this happens a deer can grow a very different shaped rack the next growing season and then go right back to normal the season after that. Sometimes the damaged pedicel never repair itself and the deer's rack suffers a permanent disfigurement.

That's a stretch. The one buck has a double beam and totally different junk coming from different antlers, the more I look at it the more I would be it isn't the same deer.

99% certain this is the same buck. He has strolled in and out of the graveyard for years now. IMO this is his best rack so far, didn't care much for his split main beam last year...

I would say possible offspring but absolutely different buck. The undamaged pedi on the left side is not even the same ... the front forks are a little more crabby... back fork has a kicker..Those would stay consistent year to year. If anything the forks would get deeper.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-09-12 AT 06:17PM (MST)[p]BB, It is without a doubt the same deer. His left antler has stayed the same the last 3 years, but the double beam was the result of an injury. Several people can verify this.

Its the same buck...me and a buddy of mine have two out of three set of sheds off of the same buck here in southern utah. Each year the buck kept the same frame and the extras were WAY different from year to year. The set of sheds I have are missing an eye guard on one side where the other two sets have both eye guards. Minus the double beam....that bucks frame is the same. The left side is almost identical. Look at how the points curl at the tips

Same deer. This buck has a pretty unique face. For a buck this big to show up and live in that cemetery, and be so accustomed to being there, he would have been seen before and would have been a big buck. Plus, his antlers are very close. Extras can change a bit year to year.

Same deer. I have the opportunity to work in the area and have watched this buck very closely. I only wish my pic's were as good as yours!
