Is there any elk or deer hunters that have been seeing any bears while out scouting/hunting this year on the san juan unit if so would you be willing to share some info to me I have a spot n stalk bear tag on this unit in oct.6th-oct.29th thanks.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-25-12 AT 05:43PM (MST)[p]We just got back from a week of deer hunting on the San Juan. We didn't see a single bear the whole week. The deer herd is looking bad. We couldn't find any big ones this year. Most of the bucks are big 3X3's. They really need a management hunt for deer on the San Juan. My Bro settled for a 27" 4X4 with short points. The muzzy and riffle hunters are going to be disappointed this year. I can believe that the DWR can't manage that unit for more than 50 tags. The coyote population is doing great on the San Juan. Be ready to take out some coyotes while you look for bears. We saw more than one coyote every day.

RoadlessHunter congrats to your brother for his deer. Thats not good to here about the deer herd down there. Im not familar with that area was you hunting in the high country or down low? Was there any bear sign where you were you hunting. I definitely will take out some coyotes if I see them.

We hunted on top of the mountain. The Forrest service guy said there is an unusual crop of berries this year even thou it's be drought conditions on the mountain.

Did you see any big bulls Roadless. My brother has a muzzy tag that starts end of Sept.

Not sure how to send PM's, but if you want to give me your email I would be happy to share all of the info I have with you. I had an archery tag and have been scouting quite a bit.

Lots and lots of bears---lots of acrons, you just need to find a a big patch with lots of acrons and a good vantage point to look for bears.

Yeah the buck population on elk ridge is pretty down esp. when you drive ATVs at mock 9 on all the roads you scare the big bucks away:) I don't think too many bears like those fast moving wheelers either.

Give me a shout, happy to help.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-27-12 AT 03:15PM (MST)[p]You can see more bucks at mock 9. Since we don't scout before the hunt we take the first 4 days of the hunt and cover the mountain at Mock 9, morning and night. After that we concentrate on the best bucks. We would have killed a 32 4X5 but my bro can't shoot and missed from 20 yards. He can't remember which pin he used. After the miss the buck moved out of the area. Just hope you don't draw on the same year as someone in our group does. We hunt the same way every time.
