As many of you guys know I typically have plenty of hunts scheduled each year. Last year I hunted 8 states and this year I am hunting 6. (at least 6...I can't make any promises on 6 yet) Everything is just do it yourself hunts and as inexpensive as possible but I have a great wife and a job that allows free time.

Many of my buddies give me a hard time and think that I never work so you can imagine the heck I took when I was lucky enough to pull an archery deer tag from the expo. To make things worse I happened to be in Cabo San Lucas on a vacation with my wife (I take her on a nice trip every year to make up for all the hunting.) I am sitting in Cabo and my phone starts blowing up with texts like..."You are the last guy on the planet that needs another tag!" And "You suck!!" and many others I wont post on the internet. Needless to say I was pretty excited to snag an archery deer tag at the expo.

Going into this hunt I didn't know what to expect. I have lived within 1 hour of this unit my whole life and I hadn't been there in 15 years. I knew it held some good deer but honestly my expectations were not super high. I started scouting a few months back and I got 1000's of trail cam pics on various water holes and pinch points. Lots of good bucks in the 140-170 range with a few in the 180's.

On opening day I hunted a canyon that had two shooter bucks in the 180 range but I was very surprised to find MANY other hunters in the area and I never laid eyes on either buck. That evening my nine year old son spotted a buck 2000 yards away that had a drop tine. I had seen pictures of the deer but this was the first time I laid eyes on him. After a long stalk we got close to killing him right before dark but had to settle for some great video of him walking over the skyline at 130 yards. On sunday I was back at home with the family and I found out that Shane Raddon had smoked the droptine buck which he named "Freak".

I was happy for Shane but had to seriously reconsider my plans. I decided to look for a buck I had on trail cameras several times in the summer but I had never seen him in real life. He was a 6 by 6 and I figured him to be 185" or so.

Long story short I got on him one morning and follwed him for several miles. I was within range a few times but couldnt get a shot because of other deer in my shooting lane. I ended up 3-4 miles from where I spotted him watching him disappear into the thick junipers. At that point I knew he was big, but I didnt think I would ever see him again.

I drove home that night not expecting to return for a few days. When I got home I couldn't sleep and I decided to go out for a quick morning hunt and hurry back at around noon. I really didn't expect much but I had to try. Right at first light I spotted what I thought was the big 6 by 6 500 yards away. I reached for my scope and looked back to the deer and he was gone. I couldn't believe it. There was no where for him to go but he was gone. He was standing in some waist high grass and I figured that he must have seen me and dropped straight down. There was a gully near the patch of grass so I decided to sneak down there and give it a try it.

As I got close to the area where I hoped the buck was bedded my heart was cranking. Suddenly at 80 yards a deer bolted out of the patch and into the gully. He turned broadside broadside looking straight away. It was a buck that I had trail camera pictures of with a cheater in the mid 140's but it wasn't the big buck I hoped for. I was so confused. I thought maybe I mistook this little buck for the big one or maybe the big one snuck out the gully. I almost turned around and headed back but I thought maybe the big buck just held tight in the brush.

I slowly walked closer and entered the grass. Not really sneaking anymore I finally saw the big bucks antlers at 4 yards! The 2 cheaters on his top left fork gave it away. I quickly drew my bow just as he bolted out of his bed running straight away. Looking back I don't even think I used a pin I just instinctively aimed and let it go. The arrow struck him right square in the spine on the dead run at about 15-20 yards. He dropped like a rock. I quickly put a finishing shot on him and proceeded to yell and scream at the top of my lungs. I ALMOST felt stupid jumping and screaming all by myself. I walked up and grabbed his horns and knew he was a little bigger than I thought. I rough taped him out at 201" with 39 1/8" of mass and matching 25" main beams. I couldn't have been happier. What a sweet buck from a "$5 tag" at the expo! This is my best buck to date and will be a tough one to beat. (However I sure as heck am going to try on Monday up in Idaho!)

Jason -

Glad to hear the story! You are a freaking animal. 4 yards?! That is ridiculous. Nice job.

DIY. I had some buddies helping on other days but on that day I was all by myself. No spotters or nothing. Pretty cool hunt. Nothing against spotters I have used them before but there is something cool about doing it all on your own.

Congrats on a great buck! Dont let the troll ruin it for you. Way to make yourself look like an idiot desertrancher! Next time maybe you should do a little investigating before talking out of your ass!

+1. Not sure I'd wanna get into a "pic measuring" contest with mt quivers. Before you post up your 3rd ever post you might wanna archive some of the many other dead animals he's posted over the years. When you are done go try and out-kill Greenhorn over on OYOA Good luck.

Why can't people just congratulate somebody and be happy for them. How many guys post up Pics in hopes someone will start questioning thier motives and such? None.

Awesome buck and great story.

I think big bucks hide like that way more than we realize. I remember missing a big 3x4 on a muzzleloader hunt. When I crossed the 100 yards to where he was there was no sign of a hit. I lined myself up with where I had shot from to make sure I was at the exact spot where the buck was. To double check I started back to where I had shot from. About fifty yards on the way back a very nice 4 point bolted out of a patch of brush 10 yards from me. I didn't shoot because I wasn't 100% sure I'd missed the first buck. I'm trying to remember that experience when hunting. Stories like yours only confirm that often when we think a big buck has blown out of the area he is just playing hide and seek.

That is a great buck. I have been watching that buck down in the alphalpha fields and just east of the reservoir all summer. I have some pretty cool video and pics and he scored better than I had expected. It looks like some of the posts on here are missing I find that strange and where did the picture of Fred go? Anyway good job Jason it takes a special individual to kill a good buck on that unit with a bow in the top of the mountains. They hold up in two spots this time of year up high and on or around the private Alphalpha fields down near town. That makes two great 200 inch bucks taken on or near the Gow*** place just outside town. I wish a few of the young kids with bow tags we have met over the last couple of months had your luck. Nice deer man and keep us informed while on your 12 ohter tough DIY hunts the rest of this fine year.

Congrats Jsson, I figured you would do good out there. I'm not gonna lie I'm jealous I applied this year to have no bow tags (new baby next friday) and it hurts.

You people crack me up. Nobody has said that Jason isn't a good hunter. It just makes people ask questions when you see his bucks pictures on a known poachers facebook page with the poacher posing with the deer. After seeing all of them pictures and him saying he guided Jason here we are, and all the missing post you make the call here.

What a sweet buck!! Good for you Jason. Congratulations. As for all the other "he was taken", etc. Take it somewhere else. We just want to enjoy the pics and story, not all the BS.

The guy holding the deer is Fred, the one and only reason Jason got to even see this deer

Ya Fred is in that picture holding the deer. He's a bell of a guy and knows where a lot of big deer are. Is be giving a big thanks to him if he could get me on a deer like that. Bell of a good guy. And nice buck Jason congrats!

This is Fred kinney and to start out
When i was i kid at 15 i did something so wrong and stupid it still disgust me to this day cause I'm still paying the price for poaching a deer and it has been the worst mistake of my life and I'm so very truly sorry i mad such a bad mistake but i can't change my past i can only control my future that's why I'am finally coming public about my mistake 10 years ago to tell every one I'm sorry i truly I'm sorry because i love mule beer more then anything
Congrats to Jason on such a beautiful buck he's a giant and one of the digest bucks to ever come off the unit I'm proud of him and proud to call him a friend he is one of the most skilled hunters i have ever meet and I'm glad i could help him out Jason buck was one of my favorit bucks i have ever watched and video in my life i have lots of video and lots of good pics of him i even found one side of sheds from last year with the help of kily
I'm sorry i made such a big mistake and if you can find it in your heart to for give me then i thank you cause i promis i will never do it again poaching is the worst thing a man can do i no cause ill be branded for life as one and I'm sorry and if you can't that ok to its your right but it don't change the fact that i love giant mules more then any thing I'm sorry

I also have to say this deer has lived on the fields his whole life the one and only time he ever left is when me and Jason the day before he shot it we scared him to the east side of town in the ceaders i have the video and pic of him ever day this year and last year and we just picked his shed up 2 bays ago from last year 400 years form were he was killed in the fields were he lived

Wow. I guess I know how it feels to shoot a nice deer. Posting on here makes a great experience turn into a tainted one. To all the guys who are passing on second hand stories how bout find the truth before trying to question someones integrity. Makes me want to stop posting my pics and stories if I have to deal with b.s. People that know me know I am a straight shooter. To the rest of you please get your facts straight because it is not fair to me to assume things that are not true.

Fred kinney is a nice guy who made a big mistake at age 15. He is a true man to come on here and admit that and he deserves big props for that. I got permission from a local landowner a few months back and met fred a few weeks ago while scouting. The day before I killed the buck fred rode around with me and helped me spot. We followed this deer in the sage for miles. The day I killed it was in a different area and I was hunting alone. Fred showed up after the deer was dead and helped me take pictures. You ask him or the landowner and they will confirm that when Fred came to find me that morning the deer was already dead. That being said I appreciated his help the previous day and I appreciated his help taking pictures. He made a mistake years ago and deserves a second chance. He has a passion for deer and he has learned from his mistake and is man enough to admit it.

To all others who posted. Thanks for the kind words. As with all big muleys there was some luck involved. The stars aligned for me on a great deer and it was one of the great days in the feild I will never forget.

As I write this I am on my way to wyoming With my two boys and my good friend Kris to hunt antelope. Hopefully it will be another fun hunt.

Congrats Jason on a hell of a buck! Fortunately for the both of us you were not able to catch up to Freak opening evening. I know hunting the low lands was not your first choice, but a 200" buck is worth switching up for. Congrats again!

Jason. Don't let others get to u on here. I rarely post because of reasons like u have discovered. It makes me sick to read what others write when they are making assumptions about something they have absolutely no idea about. Thx for the story and the beautiful pic. Keep it up.

Great buck Jason I love the looks of that stud. I hate how this site has become so bitter sweet. I actually tagged out myself on the second day of my archery hunt and am putting the buck on my wall but I just choose not to share it for some of these exact reasons, Mine is no were near the size of this buck but it gets ridiculous doesn't it? I am glad you posted and that will make a great trophy to add to you collection way to go.
Cant wait to see the next one good luck.

Great looking buck, Jason, congratulations. Too bad about the negative posts.....but I guess that's why many no longer share their photos here.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-01-12 AT 07:08PM (MST)[p]First to Jason, congrats that's an awesome buck. I've hunted Vernon and it's a tough unit. 200 inch bucks are hard to find there and you pulled it off with a bow! Man that's awesome that's all I have to say. I always enjoy seeing your pics and stories on here.

To Fred Kinney, you sound like a good guy. We all make mistakes especially in our youth. Don't let it get you down and don't be too hard on yourself. None of us on this site are perfect by any means. It takes real courage to come on here, give out your name like you did and admit that. Most men would never have the guts to do that.

Congratulations on a monster buck wth a bow and kudos to Fred for coming on here and making those posts. He paid his dues and it's not up to anyone here on earth to be judging him, especially ones that don't even know the man and his story and then try to trash the OP as well! Shame on all of you!!!

Jason, congrats on a great buck. I feel bad I wasn't able to meet up with you this summer in person but it was good talking to you on the phone. I had a feeling you would be just fine without too much of my help. Hopefully I'll be able to share pictures of a buck I've been following this summer and you'll know why my focus has been elsewhere. Also, thanks for your help setting me up for the archery hunt.

Koby

Back from Wyoming and a fun antelope hunt. Took my boys to church and we are packing up to head to Idaho for a quick 1 day deer hunt tomorrow on one of Idaho's sweet over the counter tags.

I pulled a tight tape on my Utah deer now that I had a little more time and wanted to share the results.

I had trail cam pictures of this buck through out the summer and he was not my first choice. I figured him to be 185" or so. I had a few other bucks that I figured to be around the same size scouted up in the higher country. I typically prefer high country over the low lands so I decided to hunt them first. That being said if you want to kill a big buck you have to hunt where the big bucks are. After 4 days of not turning up my first 2 choices in the mountains and after finding out the cool droptine buck was dead I decided to try down in the low country and look for the big 4 by 5 or the 6 by 6 that I had trail cam pictures of. I soon learned the 4 by 5 had been killed so I wanted to focus on the 6 by 6. I have already told the story of the hunt above so I wont repeat the details but I wanted to share the results of my measurements because I know some guys are like me and they like to add up the inches.

Mass 39 2/8
G2 18 2/8 and 16 3/8
Other Points (G3 and G4) equal about 40" total. A couple a little under 10" and a ccouple a little over 10" for a total of 40"+-
Eyeguards 2 5/8 2 3/8
Inside spread 22 3/8
Main beams 25" and 25 1/8"
Extra points 8 4/8

Any ways with a tight tape I got 198 6/8". Depending on how they score the extras and G3's (it is hard to measure the g3 because the cheaters are in the way of a straight line.) it should be plus or minus an inch two from that score. This is my biggest buck to date surpassing a 187" I killed on the Front a few years back. What a cool hunt and surpassed my expectations for sure. Every person that I have spoken with that has killed on this unit says that the deer are bigger on the ground then on the hoof. I would have sworn this buck was a 185" deer and he will gross very close to 200". As soon as I picked up one side of the rack from the brush I knew he was my best deer to date. As many of you know that is a pretty cool feeling!

Thanks again to those with the kind words and texts. Good luck to all on your hunts this fall.

Jason, fantastic buck man!! Great story too, hats off to you for making that $5 expo tag worth every penny!

And to Fred, don't know ya but I know it takes a really man to man-up for his mistakes. We've all done stupid stuff as teenagers but most of us wouldn't have the stones to post them on here and apologize for them. Let he who hasn't sinned cast the first stone. You deserve a second chance in my book, and best of luck with it!

I know Fred is in that picture holding the deer. He's a great guy and knows where a lot of big deer are.on mountain and off. I would be giving a big thanks to him if he could get me on a deer like that. And what he did has a youth was wrong and he no that the punishment he was given i think was 15 years of no hunting i think he payed the prices.Keep doing what you do fred find big deer and have fun. and nice buck Jason congrats.

Great buck Jason! Way to go. Congrats on an awesome trophy! 200" muleys are just few and far between. It's pretty impressive to knock one down with a bow. Huge KUDOS and congrats on getting the job done. Kip

Nice job Jason! That is a buck of a lifetime. Good luck in Idaho.
