Arrow Speed

I have been looking at purchasing a cross bow. The advertised IBO speeds are not any faster that compound bows even thought the draw weights are way different (60 lbs. vs. 180 lbs.)... Even more confusing to me is the fact that arrows/bolts have the same grain weights for example 400 grains (fletching, shaft and broadhead).

Can someone explain why the arrow speed is not significantly faster on the cross bow?

The crossbow has a very short power stroke. It needs a heavy pull to generate the energy to get the arrow moving.

Expand your search of crossbows. There are several that are pushing 400 fps or higher now and I have yet to see a bow shoot that fast. Make sure you are looking at crossbows with compound limbs. Most with recurve limbs will be shooting in the lower 300fps range.

Crossbows I've been looking at are in the 300's, I'll consider a few others with modern limbs and see if I can find some that have a longer/stronger power stoke. Thanks for the inputs!

Same reason a guy shooting a 26 inch draw is way slower than a guy with 30 inch draw on same bow

Look at the Excaliber Equinox mine shoots 350 fps with Flemish string and is a recurve. a compound bow and recurve crossbow is the way to go for ease in my opinion.

I think you'll like them. Customer service is unbelievable I dry fired mine last year, I know stupid thing to do, but its a lot easier with a crossbow than with a bow where you can see the arrow. It broke one of the limbs, I sent it in they replaced both limbs when I explained it was my fault they refused to take any money and told me that their bows should handle 100 dry fires without breaking. It was less than a week to get it sent to Ontario and back they must have repaired it and sent it back the same day.
