I am trying to plan for next years archery hunt and have been thinking about putting in for the wasatch area - archery in utah (17 A, B, C). I am wanting to do a remote back country hunt above the timberline. Does anyone want to share some information on this hunt or other units with similar country in northern utah. I am looking for some info on some good areas and places to start looking. Whats the quality of the hunting and hows the pressure. I would like to get away from any roads and far enough back to get away from people (maybe 4 to 6 miles. I am from southern utah and want to get out of the heat.

Pretty much impossible to get that far from a road anywhere on the Wasatch...too many roads! But that doesn't mean you can't have a good hunt, and it's plenty "backcountry" once you've been up there sleeping on rocks for a few nights! haha

Good luck.

If you want to get away from people, this is not the place to do it!!! There are people all over that unit. You hike in mile after mile and and you can't get away from them!! To many tags!!! To many dedicated hunters!! And one of the only high country units in the state that has easy access to the tops. So good luck with that. You're better off buying an over-the-counter high country tag in Colorado.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-20-12 AT 07:06PM (MST)[p]Hunting the wasatch you dont hike "in".......you hike up. Rough steep rugged country. It gets hunted hard by a ton of people....just think about it....the valley is the highest population center in utah. You wont be able to get that far away from roads. There are alot of different trail heads that make access to the tops alot easier...but trail heads in my opinion ruin the hunting cause thats how everyone else in that valley accesses the country. There are some good buck in that unit....but there are good bucks in every unit. Just have to put the time in to find them.

the last two guys are both spot on. except i think there are tons of places you can hike 4-6 miles in. But just because you hike that far doesnt mean you are getting away from the people. They are everywhere on the Front. One word of advice would be to bring good optics and glass and glass. I have hunted from the south end of the boundry line to parleys and from what i have seen the whole unit is great. there are great bucks everywhere you go on the wasatch. so im sure the further north you go im sure its still just as good. good luck getting some detailed info because this is the most secret unit because of all the people that hunt it. we all think that no one knows about your big buck that you are hunting but in reality probably 5 or 6 people are hunting that same buck just on different days.

I hunt hard and would like to camp back in so I don't have to make to long up hill hike every day. Also, I can hunt during the week for at least 1 week which may take some hunting pressure off. Maybe I will do pack trip next summer and see what I see.....

I have been to colorado and may look at that instead. The wasatch just looks like a great place and is closer.

Thanks for the information.
