Hey guys I was just wondering if anybody out there has seen many deer down on the pahvant this year while they have been elk hunting or something. This is my girlfriends first year hunting and I would like to try and get her something. I have not had a chance to scout it this year because I had a LE elk tag and spent most my time on it. If anybody has any suggestions please let me know. I do know the mountain fairly good so were not going in totally blind. I really appreciate any help given. "ITS ALL ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE ANYWAY!"

Head to Pioneer canyon. There are really nice bucks that hangout in that canyon every year. Be ready to hike, If you are willing you will be able to find a least a two footer 4 point for sure in that canyon. Good luck

Hey Rexx,

I spent the entire LE Muzzy Elk hunt around Pioneer Canyon this year and never saw a single deer. Not sure where they were but not there. We did see lots of Elk.

Well thats a good sign. If somebody is telling you there are no deer after somebody told you they have seen deer in that canyon. Obviously they are trying keep you from something. Good luck i hope you take my advice. Hunt hard and let me know if you get one.

No Rexx, I am not misleading anyone. I spent a lot of time down there this summer scouting elk and hunting on the L.E. season. I have hunted the unit for over 30 years straight and have never seen the deer numbers as low as they currently are. Take into consideration I spent 90% of the muzzy elk hunt around the mouth of Pioneer and up to 8,000 feet.

Take into consideration I could in the mid 2000 you could go for an evening drive and count 100-200 head of deer. Now you are lucky to count 20-30 head.

Ditto I have spent my whole life huntn the Pahvant and the last 12 yrs as a dedicated hunter there and it ain't nothing like it used to be. I have spent a hell of a lot of time in pioneer canyon and hiked my azz off in there and I'm telln you they ain't there. Lots of elk though. Been there twice this yr during muzz hunt and didn't see a deer.

I have spent a ton of time in that unit over the last 10yrs. Me my son hunted it for the last time 2yrs. ago. It made sick to my stomach to hunt canyons that in years past held a good amount of deer, and holds almost none.....

I'm not trying to keep people from hunting the unit, just telling the awful truth!!!!

That's one place that I truly miss hunting...

I live in Holden at the base of the Pahvant and have personally witnessed the deer herd destruction on the now Pahvant deer unit. There are a few main reasons in my opinion. The first start of the decline is when they allowed state wide archery, the unit was overrun. The forest service actually counted thousand of vehicles going up the willow creek road during the Bow Hunt. The other problem is the deer are hunted from August to November with continuous pressure. The bow hunt should be 1 week, the muzzleloader hunt should be done away with. The DWR needs to cut tags drastically on the Pahvant, the deer herd is in serious trouble.

I have hunted the pahvant for 22 years. It has been the goto spot for my family and friends. After two seasons of not even seeing a legal buck, I didn't even put the pahvant as a fifth choice on my deer application. The herd is absolutely decimated from what it used to be. This is especially true in pioneer canyon.

AGREED! something has to be done about the deer herd. Some of the best genetics in the state as far as I am concerned....but with no deer, the genetics do no good.
